Jennifer Starzec is 19 years old and in her freshman year in college. On August 16th, 2011, when she was 13 years old, Jen lost the ability to walk, sit up, or move her arms due to a rare neuro-immune disorder called Transverse Myelitis. So far, she has written two books about her journey with this condition with Sarah Todd Hammer, entitled "5k, Ballet, and a Spinal Cord Injury" and "Determination."

Jen lives near Chicago, Illinois with her mom, dad, four younger brothers, one younger sister, three cats, and one dog. Some of her hobbies include writing, singing, and swimming, and she aspires to be a physician assistant.

Inspiration often comes from the most unlikely of places and most inopportune of times, but you should try to take it when it comes, because it's hard to force yourself to be inspired. I've written many blog posts, poems, and opening chapters at 4 in the morning, which isn't the most convenient time to write, but they often end up being some of my best work.
Also, just write. Write whatever comes to mind. Write what you enjoy. If you live your life believing that you can't write, or you're terrible at it, you'll never get anywhere. No one is born with eloquent words coming from their pen; everyone has to start somewhere, and you'll never improve yourself if you don't practice.(less)

Before I got my current wheelchair, I had to rely on other people to push me around, since my arm weakness made it very difficult to push a manual chair on my own. So, naturally, I was very excited for it, because I knew how much comfort and independence it'd give me, seeing as the joystick attachment allowed me to operate it by myself all the time.

When I first sat in it and drove it around a b... Read more of this blog post »
