I meet people all the time who tell me they’ve wanted to write a book for many years–five, ten, seventeen…but they haven’t gotten to it yet. And yet, I work with people every day who write their books and publish them. In fact, I just got an e-mail from a Bring Your Book to Life® Program graduate who is ready to write her next book, after the award-winning success of her first one. The secret, of course, is in your writing habit and how committed you are. And that means showing up every day. Sometimes we get caught up in[...]

5 Ways to Love Your Library
It’ s National Library week. CNN Travel featured a lovely slideshow with 20 gorgeous photos of libraries (Thank you Geri Lafferty for sharing it with me!). When we first moved to Saunderstown at the start of winter and I felt lonely, the library provided a place to get to know my neighbors and make friends. When my sons were small, we frequented more than half a dozen of the beautiful libraries in Rhode Island: from the smallest (Willett Free) to the one with the fun playhouse (Newport) to the one with the best view (North Kingstown’s lovely pond view) to[...]

A Dozen Things a Writer Needs
1. A notebook: paper or virtual. 2. Something to write with: his own hands, a pen, a stylus, a keyboard. 3. Sleep: You can cheat short term, but long term, this one is crucial! 4. Desire: And a good night’s rest supports your passion–see #3. 5. Time: Yes, we all have this. It’s just how we choose to use it. You have 24 hours, just pick one or a half or a quarter. 6. Belief in herself: okay, most people doubt themselves to some extent. Just fake it till you make it. Somewhere deep inside you is belief. Keep showing[...]

How to Get Published: Changing Rejection into a Great, Big Book Deal
When I first met Dr. Craig Malkin at the Harvard Medical School CME publishing course, I knew I wanted to work with him to help him get published. When he pitched his book to the panel of agents, editors and book coaches, I wrote on my comments, “I’d like to talk with you,” knowing he had something special to offer–a book very worthy of being published, a book people needed.
