The idea came from an old local landmark here in Tampa, a large castle-like water tower near the river that everybody sees and ignores. Nobody seems to know the real story about it. So I made one up. It's pretty amazing, too, filled with twists and turns you will not see coming, and an amazing ending. I'm very proud of it.(less)

[image error]I’ve been watching a TV show/miniseries about the Unabomber, and it’s basically told from the point of view of the FBI agent who ultimately got enough information together to capture Ted Kaczynski.

An Angel On Her Shoulder by Dan Alatorre
" I thought this book was entertaining and thought provoking. I enjoyed this book. The story flowed well and I could not but it down. I survived two hurricanes and I was a Catholic, so I could relate to this story. Dan is a great story teller and I..." Read more of this review »

It was my privilege to read an advance copy of The Weaver, and let me tell you - when great ideas meet interesting characters and a terrific writing style, a good time is had by all.

“It’s rare to see a man step up and say “I can be a great father and learn about gymnastics with my daughter and take her to dance lessons because I love her.” I can make time to blow bubbles on the back porch. It doesn’t cause your man card to be revoked.”
Dan Alatorre

“Writers get ideas all day every day. The FedEx guy delivers a package from Sears and the writer is thinking how it could actually be a ticking time bomb.”

“What's my writing style? Lazy.”

“Finishing a book is just like you took a child out in the back yard and shot it.”

“Great writing isn't safe.”
Dan Alatorre

“Pound it out, get it done, write every day. No excuses. Kerouac said you can’t wait for inspiration, you have to go after it with a club. Damn straight. You’ll sleep a lot better getting your word count in than another quick Twitter check or keeping up to date on the Kardashians.”
Dan Alatorre

“I take the rawest, realest moments in anyone’s life and I open them up and lay them bare. The innocence of a five year old child, the awkwardness of a teenager’s first sexual encounter, the heartbreak of longing for a relationship you can’t have, confronting the possibility of the death of your newborn child, whatever it is, you open your soul and put it out there and dare the world to read it, ready to have them stomp on you and laugh, but ready to do it again the next day. You have to put yourself out there as a writer, you can’t play it safe. Great writing isn’t safe.”

message 8: by Dan

Dan Alatorre I'm getting READY to do a giveaway with Goodreads. I say getting ready because I tried to set it up about twelve times already and I keep getting an error message. So apparently I'm even more inept than I thought. But I'll keep at it and let you know. Hopefully soon.

message 7: by Dan

Dan Alatorre Started "Bird By Bird" today, after a recommendation from another author. I'm sure it's blasphemy to say I don't like it but so far - 30 pages in and loooooong into (24 or so pages, so just over 50 pages total) I haven't read anything I didn't get from author's groups or blog posts or already learned myself (except her not very funny bio) over the last three years.

Hoping it improves. Not saying it isn't a quality read, just saying it's not what I expected from the recommendation I got. That said, if I had read this three years ago when I was just starting out, I might have found it more insightful. As it stands I'm seeing it validate a lot of things I've already concluded, learned and taught to others, which is satisfying.

I know, I know, this makes me sound arrogant. I'll post a fair review when I'm done, I promise. It might be a tremendous help to new authors; I'm not saying it's not.

If you loved it, let me know why. I'd be happy to hear it. Honest.

message 6: by Dan

Dan Alatorre Also started "Wool" by Hugh Howey. It has a "grabber" of an opening, something I try to utilize but not every writer does, and it sure makes a difference. Ten words in, I'm dying to know what happens. That's a big deal and encourages me to go ahead and make the changes in my latest book I've been considering making.

Hoping this one is as good as advertised.

BTW, you guys give away a LOT of spoilers in your reviews! I'll have to watch that!

message 5: by Dan

Dan Alatorre I'm getting ready to do a Goodreads promotion, giving away a few signed copies of one of my books. Is any particular day better than another to launch?

Marketing. So much fun.
