Mason James Cole’s first novel, PRAY TO STAY DEAD, was called “a revelation” by Badass Digest, and is available through Permuted Press. He’s currently hard at work on several new projects, among them a series of Sci-Fi adventures aimed at Young Adult readers, and an epic post-apocalyptic neo-noir. He wanders the New Orleans night, in search of stories. Sometimes, he finds them—other times, they find him.

He doesn't believe in ghosts, but he sees them all the time.

You get out of your car and you jack it up-even if it's raining and you're on the Interstate and cars and trucks are zipping by and you've skinned your knuckles. You change the tire and then you get back into the car and you get going.

The words don't always flow, but that's the half of it. The other half: writers are lazy bastards. We seize ANY opportunity to waste time. We want to call it a day SO BADLY, every single time we sit down and write.

If the words aren't coming, I go back and read the last few pages. I make any changes that need making. I regain momentum. I write--even if the words are trickling out.

If you don't give up--if you push forward, despite your desire to step away and maybe fire up the PS4, you'll eventually find your way back in, and the words will come.(less)

The short answer: For some, certainly. Without a doubt.

Not many publishers would have taken a chance on PRAY TO STAY DEAD, and not all readers are enjoying it. Permuted Press is taking a chance on it, however, and the folks who love the book *really* love it.

My first novel, PRAY TO STAY DEAD, is a bloody nod to seventies Grindhouse cinema. It's extremely violent, by design.

When I was a kid in the mid-eighties, the VHS market was exploding across suburbia, and movies like THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT, and I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE were legendary. You heard about these films from friends first—someone’s brother had a friend who saw it and HE said that they actually SHOW it getting cut off—and then you finally saw the movie, and it turned out to be NOWHERE NEAR AS AWFUL as the movie you had in your head.

I wanted PRAY TO STAY DEAD to BE the movie you had in your head.

It's a rough ride, and I am an honest writer--the premise of zombie fiction is inherently horrific. With PRAY, this was my focus. It's not fun, and it's not adventurous. It's not a survivalist fantasy. It's a horror novel.

Horror novels can be many things--they can accomplish many goals. With PRAY TO STAY DEAD, my intention was to write a horror novel that actually horrified.

That said, we're really only talking about one book here. My second novel, BUSTER VOODOO, is certainly intense--and it has a few scenes of disturbing violence, but it is a *very* different novel from PRAY, and is a better indicator of what else readers can expect from me in the future.

“It was harder to ignore the smell, meat just starting to turn. And gas. The dead were quiet, very quiet in a bad way, but the sounds of escaping gas were all over. [He] was surrounded by belching and farting corpses who wanted to eat him. It would be funny if it wasn't so fucking horrible.”

“Bilbo Baggins sniffed at a small pile of what must have been brain matter, and Crate threatened to shoot him on the spot if he did a stupid fuck thing like eating that dead thing's diseased brains. His tail between his legs, Bilbo padded into the shade beneath the awning and threw himself onto the weather-worn boards.”
