Wellbeing.

One of the great treats in life is the feeling of wellbeing that one can have after a good night’s sleep. There in lies the problem, how to regularly experience this divine sensation. It can be the most elusive of achievements and as the minutes tick by into hours the realisation might for many dawn that despite trying to sleep, they are still awake. It has been the problem that has caused me to ponder about it and then as if prompted by a Guardian Angel I came across an article stating bed socks could be the answer to some of the problems of getting a good sleep.

Having healthy sleep habits can also be referred to as having good sleep hygiene. Sleep, we all need it and do it and quite frankly sometimes it can be the one area in life where we have the time to recover and heal. Sleep may lull you into thinking it is a seemingly docile and passive pastime when in fact while you sleep an awful lot goes on. Sleeping and getting enough good quality rest is a way for the body to adjust and decipher what needs to be produced or maintained and where this needs to be done. Studies have shown that those who have a good level of sleep lose more weight, have improved cardiovascular health, age better and feel the benefit in multiple physical aspects of their bodies.

Undoubtedly warm feet can reduce blood pressure and intensify the sensation necessary to relax but there is one more needed requirement to gaining that sumptuous state of forty winks. How to initiate sleep in the first place, when no matter what I try I am still wide awake, it can be this predicament that preludes the tossing and turning. Then it came to me what simple expedient that can produce the state of sleep almost instantly is of course, meditation.

This at first sounded a little daunting and slightly scary until after investigating meditation I discovered it can be a health promoting and easy technique to use in many stressful situations. Meditation itself is only the process of reducing the awareness of the cognitive facility of the conscious mind.

This technique of meditation has several stages. Of course I must be in a relaxed state without any muscle tension, the position you sit or repose in should be paramount because it is this physical point from which you begin your meditation. I consciously check all of my muscles one by one and double check my neck is completely relaxed. The first thing I do is with my eyes open look upwards as if I was looking into the top of my own head and then close my eyes. Then I imagine my eyelids are stuck together or weighed down with heavy weights. Now I concentrate on my breathing which is slow and on each breath out I feel the sensation of relaxing that is deeply satisfying and after each breath out the feeling becomes stronger and deeper. I only concentrate on the enjoyable breathing out and continue ad infinitum.

One important thing about meditation is there is no need to be taken out of it sharply or suddenly as I will simply use it as a method of relaxing myself positively and happily to sleep. When I wake up normally in the morning the benefits can be felt in my physical self but also in my attitude towards how I feel. Meditation can be an important means of lessening worries and stressful situations in life as it takes a little time to obtain a large effect in the body and mind. Being able to balance the body and mind is a useful technique that can mean in almost every area of life one can take a fifteen minutes to think about nothing other than their own sense of calm, health and wellbeing. Meditation is often thought about as a way of reducing stress for people in particular predicaments or positions, but in fact it is an easy approach to improving health for anyone in any situation who would like to use it. To be able to meditate promotes healthy awareness of yourself, your life and of course it can aid one in achieving something that is truly significant to your body and mind and that is, a good night’s sleep.

Genes.

Life in all its amazing forms has always been a mystery to me. How can there be so many varied types of creatures? I do wonder this but yet factually it has been proven that in the past there has been countless more types of creature than in that of the present day. Charles Darwin’s idea of evolution was intended to describe the process of inherited change resulting in a different life form. This process can be slow or fast and over a long or short time. Amazingly the genetic code for all life comprises just four letters of A C G T but it is the sequences that they are arranged in that is important. Ninety nine point nine per cent of all humans are the same and that leaves just naught point one per cent for individual variation. So we truly are all related.

For me this is a mind blowing fact, all life is related by a common ancestor that has at one time been vegetation and fruit and animals shared the same common ancestor. That is why all vegetation and fruit share a varying amount of similar genetic code that is the same as found in humans. These are some examples, WARNING they may shock you!

Bananas have fifty per cent of the same genetic code as found in humans. If you thought that a bit of a wowzer moment then get this, because pumpkins share seventy five per cent of the same code. Bacteria has seven per cent, Chimpanzees ninety eight per cent, a cabbage fifty seven per cent, Zebrafish eighty six per cent and a roundworm twenty one per cent. How many of those did you guess as having a share in the same genetic code as humans?

Another question for you, have you heard of the old but significant one that goes...it is often said we come from apes and if so why are there still apes? We shared a similar ancestor and evolution has many examples of creatures that have evolved and for various reasons a distinct variation becomes established that does not rely on the initial creatures becoming extinct.

I find the idea fascinating that there is a link between vegetation and animal life! The first noticeable difference is in the cells and the way energy is processed. Vegetation needs chloroplasts for photosyntheses to gather energy from sunlight. Could there still be organisms that bridge the two forms of life?

There is a whole raft of creatures that fit this criteria of part vegetation and part animal-like life. One example is a protist called Dinobryon. It has chloroplasts for photosynthesis and can feed on organic matter. It is able to swim by use of a flagella that is a whip-like appendage that gives propulsion through liquid.

There is a secondary link in the form of a sea slug Elysia chlorotica that can swallow vegetation but incorporates it into its digestive system so it too can have the benefit of photosynthesis. This symbiosis is a critical factor in that early life forms could amalgamate together sharing their benefits without destroying each other.

I think the simple frog is a fascinating example of life's adaptability as from frogs spawn tiny fish like creatures that morph into four limbed air breathing adult frogs.

The big question is how did the actual DNA come into existence in the first place? Parts of basic building blocks for DNA have been found in meteorites, which raises the question are these caused by contamination once on earth? Or is it that the process of evolution was the cause for, in outer space, the creation of the amino acids?

Could it be throughout the whole Universe there are scattered meteorites that carry amino acids and once landing in a suitable environment it can kick start life? Whatever your opinion, there is one agreeable point for everyone and that is this genes subject is one that can most certainly get you thinking...history, life and what makes us into the people that we are.

Freedom of Belief.

Socrates once declared that a wise man will appreciate his lack of knowledge. It is from this set of words that meaning can be extracted. Learning is as much about appreciating what we do not know as what we do and a true scholar will always accept that while mistakes may be a part of life, how one adapts to those moments can define a generation.

Is it necessary to fully understand everything about existence to know how to treat our fellow man? Whether I believe in a certain philosophy, why should it threaten those who think differently? Surely a confident conviction of any belief about the world can be conveyed by debate and not ever violence.

Of course there are people who merely wish for various reasons to inflict as much harm on other people that they can and use any name as a label for their actions. They have no real understanding of the philosophy connected to the label that they have used.

A novel way of refuting, without violence, people demonstrating in support of totalitarianism can be the tactic of shock. In a recent example intolerant views have been disrupted by a mass congregated dance whereby people opposed to what they knew was going on in the meeting moved with gaiety and freedom. Anger and hate does not have to be met with violence to equate it and in fact this innovative approach of distraction left those with a mind to instil intolerance in society at a loss as to how to respond.

An interesting fact is that laughter is extremely beneficial to the wellbeing of the body. I could say a laugh a day keeps the doctor away and a positive attitude can combat almost any problem that comes one’s way.

If mankind is to survive it must learn from past conflicts. History does not have to be repeated and if we are to succeed then it may have to be that we learn from the past to build for a more improved future. The second world war was instigated because of accepting religious and racial discrimination, further atrocities came about because of the same mistakes being made. The Americas suffered a bloody conflict over racial difference and domination over one type of man that was considered to be a lowly slave. These are the lessons of the past but if we do not learn from them then history may not be the ally that it could be.

It could be ironical that man’s technical capability should exceed his social conscience and allow a nuclear holocaust to take place. This of course would leave an opportunity for the cockroach to assume dominance over the world and be content to simply survive. As survival seems to be the name of the game, then one has to consider what the rules of the game are and if we should not alter our technique as players to a more beneficial outcome for all.

Mankind’s preoccupation with war is a continual enigma and when the opportunity for so much good is possible, I would have thought positively thinking leaders would not look at improving lives as an ideal but a necessity. In order to do that one would need an intellect that is not limited to national boundaries and racial or religious differences. Intolerance however enforced may serve to build walls but would this not only imprison those who live on either side.

America at one time was called the New World. Different people of the world who wished for a new life emigrated there with hope to create a better future. The original inhabitants of many countries were dispersed and bloodshed occurred on lands where a vision should have united instead of ruled. Upon these newly formed lands societies were built. Older communities and modern societies of the world progressed. Once again a time of alteration proved that lessons were there to be learnt from and behaviour should provide examples of humanity, equality and understanding. Wherever these qualities were lacking, important examples of historical disruption were lived through and however short or long these events, they certainly marked the timeline of man. It was because of a need for improvement that a sense of forward thinking was embarked upon and that a period of enlightenment was known.

The laws of some countries include freedom of belief. I think it is import that the population resist all attempts to undermine such a precious right and stand up to every aspect of it, from the lowest to the most high, that could be bent on destroying this freedom that has taken so much effort to achieve.

CBT.

It is in superhero films, fantasy books, in the stuff of the wildest imagination and in the minds of every child growing up and I have to say that I have long marvelled at the potential power that ordinary people have to improve their lives. As you grow you get to know a different and maybe more measured approach to life and the thoughts of powers that once had you hooked can alter. What people are able to do in terms of their own power has for me brought a focus to mental health and how what stimulates a mind can in turn shape the ability of a body. This is a serious issue, especially as in the UK it is stated that one in five people suffer from anxiety or depression and in some cases both. So how can people unlock their inner-hero and what is the elixir of good health?

I think it is important for people to be their own superhero in life. There can be many reasons for not feeling your best but in order to redress the situation a good start is to check something that influences what you do, how you feel and what you can do about it and that is... your way of thinking.

Quite simply it is how each person views the world in relation to themselves that can be beneficial or diminish their ability to live happily. I am reminded of the saying sticks and stones may break my bones but insults never hurt me. The point is how does a person process a derogatory remark and in some cases these thoughts are self-generated. What a person says to themselves when they look in the mirror is important as this could shape their subconscious and conscious view of themselves.

I have met people who even when the sun is shining and it feels so good to be alive are miserable and determined no matter what to turn everything into a negative. It can be difficult because if you join them in their pessimistic view of the world they may seem appeased but is this truly how you feel and often having a negative attitude will only serve to bring about less than happy consequences.

At one time as a young boy I had a tendency to cut off my nose to spite my face. At that time I did not know how the answer to my behaviour was in my own hands and the only person suffering was myself. One day I decided to make an effort and not to react without thought of the consequences of my behaviour.

The first step to any change must come from the person themselves. Mental health is significant to wellbeing and even physical ability. There has been increasing evidence of people who were suffering with anxiety, depression or obsessive compulsive disorders having made the first move and seen that effort in itself help them to feel better about life. It may be the most difficult part of the process but the first look to help and effort to make little changes can be the most important.

It is the circumstance and the environment of other people that affect my mood, but what is most important is my own view of the world in relation to what is said or done.

Talking to other people can be helpful if I am feeling down. To who I speak and the type of conversation is vital in making that break from an attitude or situation.

Mind and body are linked so it is important to look after both. The facts though many of us may know them but not put them into practise is that exercise, restful sleep, regular meals and water through the day can do wonders for good health. Again little things can be the motivation for large improvements.

There is a process called Cognitive behaviour therapy also known as CBT which works on the basis of talking about feelings and emotions but allows for a means of approaching stressful or negative situations in a positive way. The stoicism philosophy of dividing things into those that I have control of and those where there is no control and then logically analyse the consequences they have on my life can be applicable to a certain extent in this method of thought.

It is only after I realise that it is my choice that makes a difference to either being a pessimist or optimist that I can decide how to accommodate what happens to me. In a lot of cases I can turn what once appeared a negative into a positive, simply by the way I view things.

Strange but True.

Everyone has their own opinion and divisive can be the subjective topics of life and death let alone the strange things that can happen in between. I think the following account based on fact is extremely interesting for several reasons.

A couple were driving in their car on the main road in broad daylight and as usual for them they were arguing. The argument was getting heated as the wife continued to complain about the length and time of the journey and that he was driving too slowly. To make matters worse there was a somewhat disconcerting wheeze of a noise as a sudden amount of air started to let itself out of one of the tyres and it became obvious that they had a puncture. The husband pulled up off the main road and loudly swore at his bad luck. They both got out of the car and his wife stood behind the car and loudly complained why her husband had not reminded her to get another packet of cigarettes. Her husband had started changing the wheel for the spare when his wife jumped at the sudden appearance of a man dressed in plain and simple clothes. It seemed as if he had come out of nowhere and he asked if he could help. The husband was having trouble with releasing the wheel nuts. The man suggested to turn the wrench in the opposite direction to that which he was trying. This solved the problem and the husband offered the man a lift, which he accepted.

The wife now resumed complaining this time that they would be late for their appointment. The man replied “it is better to arrive late than not to arrive at all.” There was a somewhat harmonious sense about him. The husband asked where the man would like to be dropped off. He replied with a very tranquil but definite sounding answer “I will know the right time to leave”. He then looked at the husband and wife and summarised with a sentence “life has many trials but they can seem harder when people pull in the opposite directions, a couple pulling in the same direction will find life a more easier journey to be on.” It was a lovely moment that saw for once the husband and wife both agreed. The wife turned in her seat and asked “where do you come from?” Her interest had been peaked but on asking and hearing no response, she turned and then looked in surprise at her husband as the man had disappeared.

In the back seat of a car and strapped in with a seat belt had been the man. They stopped and reported what had happened to the first policeman they saw but on hearing what they had to say he was not surprised as he told them that while he could investigate and search that stretch of road for the man he knew he would find nothing. This was because they had been one in a long line of people who had all reported the same occurrence of the man and regularly he had intervened to help each of them. The many reports told of how this same man in description would appear and help them but then disappear again leaving them puzzled as to what had happened. It seemed that the plight of this person was to help travellers.

The first interesting point to think about and ask is was the man an apparition? If so then how had so many people all seen such a similar sighting? If one accepts what happened then you may ask is it possible that I could have met someone in a similar position without realising who they were?

There are good and bad people in life so should there not be good and bad people who have passed on from life? I think the main point is there is no reason to fear that of which is unexplained if it has helped you and if someone similarly to the above example chooses to appear it is likely to be for a reason as it is far more rewarding to give help. It is more likely in this scenario to be a good intervention rather that one with evil intent.

If you are interested in the idea of an afterlife and possibly spirits then you probably should not expect to see a white sheeted apparition as many reports of such sightings have been removed from this notion. There are many examples of spiritual sightings of individuals who look as alike to a person you may meet and have a conversation with on an everyday basis.

All existence is a combination of energy and mass. What is even more interesting is the greatest part of the Universe is invisible. The universe is 68% dark energy, 27% dark matter and less than 5% of everything else including the earth.

Space is not empty as in that particles appear and disappear. It is believed that dimensions are an important aspect of creation of existence and as many as 16 dimensions are being talked about and discussed. That raises the idea that life and spirits are involved in types of dimensions and at times a connection can take place.

Whatever your thoughts on an afterlife, it is difficult not to think about the relatively vast number of reports of unexplained occurrences. If you stumble upon something strange it can be all too easy to laugh it off or pretend that it may not have been as significant to you as it may have been. If it has helped you, given you a basis to ponder or think then this in itself may have been a reason for it to have happened.

Endorphins.

Sometimes I am so wrapped up in life’s day to day events that I forget how powerful my brain is. Pleasure, pain and feelings in between can all be controlled by my endorphins. You may have heard of certain foods being able to promote an endorphin rush in the body but people themselves can individually use these bodily produced hormones to increase their ability to relax and heal.

An interesting study showed that after a boxing match the victor’s wounds healed much faster than the vanquished and sometimes the victor would be in such a euphoria that he did not notice many of his wounds. This euphoria is extremely enjoyable because of the release of endorphins in the brain.

How without stepping in a ring can I also enjoy these pleasure endorphins? Fortunately the brain can not distinguish real experience from imaginary. I first learned about this and an example was given to just close your eyes and think of eating a nice freshly baked jam doughnut that is smothered in loads of sugar. Now without any of the health hazards of actual life, I take a big bite of it and feel the sugar around my lips. Involuntarily I lick my lips. The stronger the belief the more successful the experience of releasing those endorphins. Of course eating a jam doughnut is only the first step to creating enjoyable scenarios and examples of endorphin release.

So I think it is a good idea to take real points of elation that have happened through my life. As an example I remember at school winning a place in the Struggler Competition for those who could not swim yet. Even though the prize was second place the achievement was the important fact because the race had eight teams of competitors divided into two on each team and the first placed two pegs on a suspended rope about five meters from the shallow end of the swimming bath. My partner was the last to fix the pegs to the line and I had to wait for his return before splashing into the swimming bath.

When I think back to being a child I used to daydream a lot but did not realise I was probably releasing endorphins all the while, even as I saw myself in the last minute score the vital goal to win the FA cup final and I have lost count of the number of times I have won at Wimbledon. I am undoubtedly the best batsman that ever lived. My daydreams were not passive as I would be active running backward and forwards and collapse breathless but overjoyed at the enlightened sensation cascading throughout my body. I hear the cheering of the crowd and the fantastic sense of elation when I am told that I had achieved a notable position.

Exercise is one way in which endorphins can be brought to attention and sent to flow into our daily lives. Endorphins, the neurotransmitters found in the pituitary gland could be your ally in the alleyways of life. Studies have shown there to be 20 types of endorphins demonstrated in humans. Not everyone releases the same amount of endorphins in accordance with their exercise intake either but if you have a healthy exercise endorphin rapport then the potential to be happier and healthier could be at your fingertips or toes.

Behaviour enhancers, endorphins are an asset if you understand them and use them in balance with how you live your life. Animals can be influenced by the endorphins in their bodies and beta-endorphins can be released in them if given a simple action of grooming. In fact petting, stroking or even embracing with a pet can be a two-fold means of getting the happy feeling and relaxation promoting endorphins going for both animal and human.

Laughter is one of the easiest endorphin releases. You may not think it but a life enhancing means of inducing endorphins in the body can be influenced by your involvement in the funnier side of life. It could be a good excuse for that extra few minutes to share in a joke or to take an approach to looking at a problem that makes it less stressful or anxiety filled.

Smells can alter the amount of endorphins that we experience. Vanilla and certain scents of flowers have been known to influence people’s idea of wellness and fulfilment.

Why are endorphins important? Motivation and well being can be influenced by them and in life almost everyone could do with that little positive promotion into achieving and succeeding. The body is a powerhouse of energy and some of this is the doorway to sublime pleasure and health, all it needs is for us to use this natural resource that we all have and then one can truly appreciate what a healing, encouraging and useful assistant to the body the endorphin can be.

Human Behaviour.

What is possibly the most significant fact of material existence? Vibrations. This important fact is the basis of the law of attraction. Like is drawn to like and many think that to be aware of this power can be as if one has their hand upon the door of happiness and fulfilment.

Have you heard of the statement... we are what we think? More than this we affect other people as they in turn may have effected us. Our conscious attitude will have an affect on our subconscious mind and in turn this will greatly affect our physical well being.

If my wife says you do not look too well and later at work somebody else remarks that I am looking ill, it may not take long for me to look in the mirror and confirm I must be sick. Although nothing has changed except because of the reinforcement and conviction of thought I think I am ill and then as a consequence really do feel ill.

Knowing about a fact maybe a means of increasing knowledge but many people do actively want to put these facts to a practical use. I think the interesting part of knowing is finding out how people have gone on to interpret and use those facts. How do people behave because of their psychological beliefs and choices. This concept has led to the question I may now know the facts but how can I use this phenomenon in a positive way? It is for many an age old question. What do I really want out of life that will make me happy? Many may decide it is money then set a specific figure as a realistic goal so as to be content at achieving this figure of wealth. It is interesting that for the majority just to say I want to be rich will not do as they will never be content and seem always to be striving for that little bit more.

There are several ways of looking at life and they can all impact and influence human behaviours. One principle of thought to consider is if I crave for something and do not have it this thinking will make me unhappy. So what is the answer? Do not crave for anything material. Is that possible? Another way of looking at life is moderation in all things, neither being too optimistic or pessimistic. This may well be an incentive for promoting balance but how many people will be able to achieve a consistency in this practice of thought and behaviour?

Positive belief in a goal needs to be consistent. It is easy to fall into a way of thinking and routine... I will be happy in the future once I have achieved this or I have got that. In the meantime I am making myself unhappy by not appreciating my good fortune with what I already have. So every day can start in a positive way of good will by appreciating my present good fortune.

Does the law of attraction really work? Many people do believe that their positive achievements can be put down to an I would like, I will focus on and I will attain principle. There have been examples of individuals who have such a conviction that it then becomes a possible explained basis for success.

Interesting facts about behaviour has led me to think about the wider issue of the unity of creation. Similarities can confound and astound, did you know that at one time humans and dolphins shared the same ancestor. A really mind blowing fact is bananas and Humans share 50 % of the structure of DNA. Harmonics are an every day feature in music. Light and colour are formed by varying frequencies. All living beings emit a heat energy aura that can be identified with equipment.

Throughout the Universe invisible forces affect everything in existence. Many people decide to use the natural law of attraction to dictate their behaviour. An increased knowledge about how people can interact and involve themselves in these thought process led behaviours can in turn provide intriguing ideas about why we do what we do.

Stoicism.

Just recently I came across a philosophy called Stoicism which captured my interest. The founder was a man called Zeno who lived three hundred years before the birth of Jesus Christ. Zeno suffered a major calamity that left him cast on an island without any belongings or means of support. On recovering from this situation and through study he began teaching his ideas of survival through life. This he did in Greece on the outer steps of a vividly painted building.

Seneca was one of the earliest teachers of Stoicism and he had the misfortune to also be a teacher of a Caesar by the name of Nero who had the distinction of watching Rome burn. Nero commanded Seneca to take his own life. However before this Seneca taught that life does not have to be thought of as in how short it can be but instead more focus should be given to how it could be wasted by not choosing to do worthwhile things with our valuable time.

What established Stoicism was the work of a Roman Caesar by the name of Marcus Aurelius who practised the teachings of it and was considered one of the last good Caesars of Rome.

Why should I be interested in a philosophy that was started so long ago? One of the more recent followers of Stoicism was Nelson Mandela, a man who is an example of positive thought put into practice. Stoicism is intriguing because it is based in many of the concepts of psychological thought. Modern day psychologists use particular techniques in treating their patients and these are the very same that are based on the principles of Stoicism.

When asked to give an example of a character who, for me, represented Stoicism exceptionally well... I had to answer with the fictional character of Spock. The character who many will associate with being prominent on a certain sci-fi classic, the gentleman with the pointed ears from the first series of Star Trek.

In life there are undeniably shaping events. Those events can be divided into ones that I have control of and those that I have no control over. Stoicism teaches how to deal with events where I have no control and it does this in the best way possible. Logic can reshape an event in the mind and by doing this take out the emotion that can be the disturbing aspect of it.

While thinking about philosophy it occurred to me to ask what is the difference between philosophy and religion? This may be the answer. Religion is a belief and means of worship whereas philosophy is a way of perceiving everything.

I think there is a danger to be too quick and think something is fatalistic. To be successful one has to have perseverance, but it is often useful to have a fresh eye and look at life from a different angle. Even to start at the beginning, once a wrong road has been chosen it is difficult to see the mistake that has been made.

Critics of Stoicism have pointed out, that according to them, it denies hope. I think hope has a value but not on its own. It needs the support of logical effort. Hope is the first step to look outside of a situation but it needs the backing of action after some distinctive thought. If you take the example of a gold bracelet that has been lost, do I accept the loss and reframe the mental pain of it going by saying that it is not the end of the world? I could have hope I can find it by thinking about it in a logical way and asking where was it seen last? How could it have been dropped? I could go to the area and after methodically searching, then because of this method, find the lost gold bracelet.

I believe religion and philosophy should not be followed blindly without thought to the consequences of such an action. It is said that no man can obtain complete Stoicism. My thought is would I want to do that? Stoicism is an ideal to improve life, not to dominate it.

In life there is an opportunity to learn about religions and philosophies and if I note the best from each it must surly help to point me in the best direction and hopefully aid me into trying to be a better person.

Musicals.

The fact that at one time when at school my music teacher on investigation asked me to stop singing as my vocal rendition was at odds with the rest of the class, that has never put me off enjoying music.

Admit it, nearly everyone has at one moment or another given a bit of an air guitar rendition of their favourite song or even though it may have been in secret, shower sung their own heart out. For me some of the happiest moments involve recalling the songs from the musicals I have seen. It is such a simple pleasure to enjoy “The Sound of Music” songs and feel the emotion of “Edelweiss” that to me represents the feelings of unity and belonging to all people no mater which nationality they are.

Dickens's Oliver Twist film when turned into a musical has a range of energetic, funny and moving songs by Lionel Bart Such as “Food, Glorious Food” “Consider Yourself,” “You've Got to Pick a Pocket or Two,” and “Where is love?”

There are so many great musicals to choose from and each can have an influence on that moment in time when I was...or where I had...I only have to close my eyes and relax and in a few minutes I can visualise being on the yellow brick road and hear the music of “We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz..” Of course I am free to mix the recollections in no particular order and from West Side Story I am repeating “Maria, Maria.”

It can be about the impression that it makes and every musical does have that basis on what music builds those heart-stopping and exhilarating scenes. It does not mater if I can not remember all the words as my ears are filled with fantastic music and my mind evokes colour and action. The mind is a powerful tool and has a limitless ability to change my feelings and emotions. This is the beauty of taking a short time in a quiet place where I will not be disturbed and revelling in my private panorama of past delights of incredible musicals.

I believe the more the mind and memory is used the stronger and healthier the brain will be, exercise of the mind is a very positive pastime and this has benefits for overall health and longevity.

I need a technique to control and rest my imagination and finish any mental stimulation session with peaceful silence by a repetitive word. I use the same word until even that fades away into silence. Some examples are relax, rest and falling. Each time I breath out, I reinforce the sensation of the word. I feel myself sinking deeper into relaxation. Even to open my eyes would take an effort. Using this method I sometimes simply fall off to a really enjoyable sleep.

If you have any trouble relaxing or resting then you may like to give the above technique a go. It is intriguing to think of the brain as an attribute that we can train and maintain. Our mental health and ability to function can be dependant on how we treat ourselves. Mental well-being is as important as our fitness in body and when you ensure that your mind is at an optimum then you can benefit in many areas of life.

Animal Associations.

My early choice of reading included Tarzan of the Apes by Edger Rice Burroughs and I was enthralled at the idea of different species of animal associations. In this case particularly poignant was a female ape that took on the care and protection of a human baby. Having found the infant that had survived a plane crash that had killed his parents, the ape not only formed a relationship with the child but helped to bridge the gap of what was needed to keep him alive. Many of the animals in the Jungle book by Rudyard Kipling had intriguing associations. Animals you would not have thought of formed a strong bond of friendship and lived together because of a common aim. Plausible? You may not think so but then let me remind you of a few very real examples of this kind of animal association through history.

An event of this kind although not frequent has an earlier record in the form of Romulus and Remus who were both suckled by a wild wolf. They later were the founders of the city of Rome. There is a factual record of a boy in modern times being found alive and well, he had also been brought up by wolves in the wild. He had no conventional language but did have a mode of communing and howled like the wolves he had once lived amongst.

Maybe a more bizarre association developed when a large snake was being fed mice only to establish a long lasting friendship with one of the mice intended to feed him. They lived together quite contentedly and despite many of what the experts had predicted would happen, their example became an extraordinary but intriguing instance of animal association.

In the wilds of the Africa's Serengeti a lioness has been filmed suckling a leopard cub and this, as you would think, is a most unusual event. I think it shows the maternal drive that all creatures have for all types of life and the fact that if put in the correct type of instance then the unthinkable can become a very real example of animal partnerships. Of course there are exceptions and when it comes to absconding from maternal duties can there be anything better than the Cuckoo who constantly lays eggs in other birds nests and leaves them to bring up their offspring? Animal association in this instance is much more based on a one sided beneficial route to keeping a species alive.

They fight like cats and dogs is often a description of a violent and associated consequence of many animal species being introduced to each other but it could not be further from the truth on one real life occasion. What would you think of the pairing of a fox and a cat? Natural born enemies? You would think so, but not in this actual example where the two befriended each other and broke with such a historically animal associated tradition. On numerous occasions the sighted couple could be noted walking side by side, playing and displaying a tie with each other that may well have been thought against conventional means. In another instance a young cat was introduced into a home where an elderly dog had been resident for some time. The dog had a bemused expression on its face as a hammock and climbing frame with rope were deposited in the living room and as the line of cat belongings kept coming, the look on the dog's face got more and more perplexed. Even though the dog was in every way an opposite to the cat, in size, height and habits, he on a first few minutes of being made aware of the feline took care not to lay on the cat, barking to signal what he was about to do before he sat down each time and he patiently put up with the cat playing with his tail and even played with him to keep him entertained. They enjoyed a long peaceful and what had to be a life together that many had thought would not ever be possible.

It is a fact that animal association can be interesting and at times fact may well be stranger than fiction. It is true that some people will view certain creatures as vermin where as other people will see them as pets, pests thought of by some cultures maybe cherished in others and animals who are either predator or prey may well switch roles when it comes down to it. I think it is important that what makes humans civilised is the supreme regard for not causing suffering to all of the many types of living creatures and understanding that animal associations may not be as stereotypical or predictable as one may think.
