Immigration.

Throughout world history there have been notable intellects who have seen opportunities to galvanise social and economic change for the benefit of mankind. An example is Aneurin Bevan with the creation of the NHS. Then it was that for social independence and economy Mahatma Gandhi guided India into a new and defining destiny. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke inspiringly of social equality and laid the foundations for integration of the races.

Now is the time for people of vision and wit to turn what others see as a negative into an economic and social positive by utilising the issue of immigration.

For many reasons there is a major influx all throughout the world of human migration and illegal immigration. It has been seen as a dilemma. Criminalisation, deportation and segregation has only worsened the situation. Apart from the human distress caused by specific examples of degrading treatment, this action clearly is not a solution, as desperation will lead so many to try and enter potential geographical homes again. At the same time that numbers are growing despite the harsh treatment and dangers involved in making trips across countries, each person carries with them their own possible positive means of contribution. People can in themselves create their own valuable assets and this can be dependant on the immigration process that is observed in each country.

Many host countries have a great need for a variety of academic and manual jobs. There is a requirement for substantial repair on the roads, rail and waterways. There is a need for farming and industrial production. If a skill set is valued and assessed as a means of integrating positive population redress then would it not make sense to offer a way of transforming people’s status by employing them in a worthwhile manner?

The reality is the inhuman market that is flourishing on the desperation of illegal immigrants forced to gamble with their lives and pay vast amounts of money to traffickers who care little for the life of their cargo.

It needs organisation and control to change a status quo for the better. The whole process of immigration needs to be reformed, reviewed and revitalised. The negative association of immigration needs to become a remnant of the past. This is an issue that has become urgent for multiple countries and what this should tell us is that shutting off and shunting away such a problem is not resolving anything. The only answer in times of change is to rethink and adapt to the current need. People of the world need help to formalise proper access to entering a country by a means that does not cause more hardship and encroach on already established resources but defines a valuable citizenship to a new country. Why not create the means to an end, instead of trying to deflect and worsen a problem?

It is ironic that some countries have a history of a migrating population that were not subject to a definition of legal or illegal. There is already in evidence a huge amount of empathy and awareness from multiple populations about the need to respond to a difficult situation and this could be made much easier if corresponding authorities and governments would utilise the large potential that is in front of them. Work with people instead of against them. Allow for an adaption to procedures to meet the needs of today. Answer the problem and act on what could and should be the means of motivating evolution. Each era faces difficulties but history has shown that at times of distress countries can either debilitate themselves or dynamically approach a relevant response. The latter has meant that individuals have prospered and countries have been built on the values of forward thinking. Immigration is a development that has to be responded to positively, people working alongside embracing an enhancement of nations has to be a more prosperous way of regaining control. It would be good to think that history has had enough examples upon which countries can now build a better broaching of such a highly influential issue both to the benefit of the economy and to the well-being of each and every person.

What it takes to be Presidential.

Presidential qualities can be distinct from the actual title of president. It might well be that a nation has the good fortune to have the combination of a president who is inherently a presidential person, someone who displays logic, fairness and foresight. This might not always be the case and just as specific presidents are not known for having any significantly presidential qualities, similarly there have been historically important individuals who have been extremely presidential in their values and life achievements but have not actually held the title of president. That is why Benjamin Franklin comes to mind. An individual who was not an inventor alone but also a scientist, writer and an outstanding diplomat who was crucial in establishing good relations outside of America. How he behaved and what he did would later allow the founding fathers to write The Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.

George Washington reflects the ideals of spirit and wisdom, both qualities necessary for human dignity and independence to thrive. Abraham Lincoln took on the mantle to literally fight for the ideals that would benefit wider society and he strove for a sense of unity as a testament to his life. Dwight D. Eisenhower took on the crucial role of supreme commander of the allied forces during the Second World War which successfully established a new order of peace, this would never have been achieved without the USA having a close cooperation with other countries. John F. Kennedy deserves his position as a presidential President for steadfastly refusing to be coerced into a nuclear war with Cuba. His program of reducing military involvement in the Vietnam War was reversed by Lyndon B. Johnson on John F. Kennedy's assassination.

Morality is arguably one of the most important aspects of what it takes to be presidential. It is in being able to have consistency and transparency in beliefs that no complication is necessary. In multiple noteworthy presidents have there been examples of the individual choosing a steadfast secure method of policy making over a less assured gambling strategy. In numerous presidents has luxury not been a means of boasting but of delivering an achievable incentive for the population. Building success has often in past examples of presidential leaders been about driving people towards a morally appropriate attainment that could give back to society and not towards a hook or by crook methodology.

What does America first mean? It might not be a shock to reveal that previous presidents had a grasp of what putting a country first meant. In fact being able to successfully prioritise what a country’s needs are has shown not to require isolationist politics but an ability to have conscious recognition of how a nation integrates with other growing and evolving economies.

Conventions do not have to be broken to achieve a sense of independence, far from it great examples of adept leadership have come from an ability to adhere to the agreements that strengthen a country’s reserve and recognise how it can define a uniquely admirable set of ideals.

Constitutions have often been promoted by previously presidential presidents because to protect human rights is imperative, broken down to a most basic fundamental law of life without a definition of how we think it appropriate to treat others, how can we ever be expected to be treated with dignity and equality ourselves.

Ages might have altered, media outlets may have developed and formed but how a leader uses his presidential position to shape the experiences of members of our societies will always matter. Clarity over confusion will always win out. A population pleasing president is one who is not a complicated proposition, simply one who has compassion and justice at heart and one who can bring together instead of divide apart.

Surprising Remedies.

Let’s face it there are some things in life that are not all that pleasant to look at, think about or even discuss and yet they can have a significant affect on good health. Embarrassment can be a main factor in not talking about these health issues and for some the misconception about what the possible remedies could involve might well be a barrier in itself to overcome. It can be all too easy to cover up a problem and try to forget about it...but in reality most health issues can be resolved and if left untreated can worsen.

For some time now I have been investigating the possible viability of natural and easy to use alternatives for health ailments. Amongst my research I found out about the shocking statistics for a small but difficult to treat condition, but what was it? Toenail Fungus also known as onychomycosis. It can affect every three out of a hundred people living in the UK. Twenty percent of people over the age of sixty and fifty percent of people over seventy suffer with nail infections. Adults are more likely, in fact thirty percent so, in contracting the dreaded toenail trauma but fear not because one might be far more able to say farewell to the fungi than first thought.

In finding out more about this particularly frustrating issue I came across someone who had reportedly known that there was a discoloured white patch on each of their big toes, the marking was about one inch by half an inch in size. It was not troubling them and completely inadvertently they discovered a handy cure because of an unrelated injury to their foot. Upon tripping over and spraining one of their feet, a little more time was spent on inspection of the foot and it was decided they should do something about the discoloured big toenails. On looking at the possible treatments they speculated at the exorbitant price of some of the available products and what was worse was the recommendations or lack of them. In reading about the experience the person spoke of trawling through the comments of people who had purchased treatments only to have had no significant benefit from the product. It all made for pretty negative reading and then I stumbled, if you will pardon the pun upon an extremely interesting piece of research whereby some fantastic claims had been made. Twenty people had used Vicks Vapor Rub on their affected toenails and eighteen of these participants had gained completely successful results.

Many would not think it but contained within what I had always thought of as a decongestant was an absolutely miraculous remedy for toenail fungus. I read up on more experiences and was amazed to see that there was evidence to suggest that people had within minutes after using the Vicks Vapor Rub on an infected toenail seen a positive clearing of the affected area and this was after only the first application. The majority of these cases reported that most of the toenail had been restored to a normal state after a very short period of use.

Finding out about this cure made me wonder how many other simple remedies for every day afflictions are available? As a general public are many unaware of possible solutions to frequently experienced health ailments?

Muscle and joint pains can be a real problem for many and this is increasingly true for an ageing population. Even younger people have reported having this potentially debilitating form of ache in the joints and once again a very neat solution can be found without too much fuss, as the answer could well be discovered in a tablespoon of cider vinegar. When a tablespoon of this liquid is put into a glass of water, it can work wonders.

There are certain issues that fall into the annoying but still serious category of a wellbeing complaint and cramp can be one of these hard to fix problems. Did you know that if one feels cramp coming on there is a quick and effective cure at your disposal and it involves nothing other than a simple physical action. If cramp is your affliction, the solution can be to stand up and push the foot feeling cramp down hard against the floor and this often immediately stops the severe ache in the muscle.

Many will know that when looking at frequently experienced health issues, colds can be an absolute winner. There is a remedy that can be found to fight off the dreaded lurgy, the cumbersome cold and that can be in regularly taking a superfood ingredient, the fantabulous garlic. Garlic is actually a complete hero for the body because apart from improving the immune system, it relaxes blood vessels and is an antioxidant.

Instant remedies to lower blood pressure involve drinking plenty of water and believe it or not going for a walk. They are both simple and reliable methods proven to show that they reduce blood pressure. Of course it is quite normal for blood pressure to go up and down and of course each person’s pressure should reflect the current state of their age and health. A slight fluctuation because of the time of day should also be acknowledged but if you are looking to lower blood pressure naturally then turn to the H2O and get on your best walking shoes!

It is estimated that the majority of people do not regularly get enough potassium in their diets. This is an important mineral and electrolyte that counters sodium and is important in protecting the heart by reducing hypertension. It ensures efficient running of biological body functions. That is why a quick remedy for a lack of potassium is crucial. If feeling faint, then eat a banana. (Note going all Tarzan is not compulsory but the boost of energy that a banana can provide might well make you feel like it!) Other foods rich in potassium are greens and particularly potent can be the humble lettuce.

I hope some of these suggestions can be of help in a time of need or simply used to improve those hard to talk about or difficult to treat health issues. Useful ideas and solutions do not have to be overly complicated to provide total success. Health and happiness can be undoubtedly linked and if you have a few helpful hints to hand then you might well have the good fortune to have both topped up to their most satisfying level in life.

Lifestyle Foods.

When looking for healthy lifestyle foods there is, what appears, conflicting ways of creating this most desirable condition. Why should what is eaten be so important? Quite simply, the length of a healthy life depends on the choice of every day food and lifestyle options.

Achieving and succeeding in this increasingly popular and vital arena is as intriguing as it is appealing so I decided to look at the populations that have proven good health. There is evidence of health having come about as a direct result of diet and this can be seen in populations such as the Inuit. It could be very much that what they do not eat is as important as what they do. Contained within their diet is often no carbohydrates, fruit, sugar or sweets. What they do eat plenty of is fish, meat and eggs, consequently their balance of omega 3 is very high in relation to omega 6. The ideal ratio is one to one. Populations that have higher consumption of omega 6 such as fifteen or twenty to one are considered to be much less healthy. Some experts have brought up the idea that the Inuit have a genetic adaption that somehow can explain why eating meat and eggs is beneficial specifically for them. It is important to note that as a population they are widely thought of as energetic and multiple conclusions suggest that their diet has a great impact on the state of health.

Japan has a healthy population, some eat a fermented dish called natto and this can be very popular. A very high proportion of culturally appreciated Japanese food intake is based on fish. The food is served in small dishes. Mindful eating or conscious application of hunger to food ratios can be implemented with this specifically portioned food much easier. In addition to a generally considered healthy diet, exercise is an important objective for all ages and takes place as a daily task at multiple homes and work locations. Tai chi is a very popular practice that is widely accessible to many different physical capabilities and can be used not only to stimulate the body but also to relax the mind.

The French are notable for the benefits of using onions and garlic in their cooking. Both these ingredients are known for the antioxidant properties that they contain. Many people have adapted an obligatory croissant or much loved baguette into a breakfast routine worldwide. Often dairy consumption in France is high and a glass or two of wine is incorporated alongside certain meals.

Many people in Germany have a liking for sauerkraut as well as different cheeses. The culture of including a glass of wine with a dinner is also recognised.

Populations that share a preference for the Mediterranean diet also have an enviably healthy lifestyle. This diet is one which contains oily foods amongst which predominantly are nuts, vegetables and multiple vitamins from fresh fruits.

So what is the best lifestyle diet? I would have to say the one that relates to one’s present state of health and daily objectives. Any diet needs to have balance and best benefit the person who is following it. Diets do not need to be restricting but should focus more greatly on the good for you foods for an individual, many categories of intake should be included always bearing in mind that the balance of omega 3 in relation to omega 6 is important.

Reducing excessive consumption of carbohydrates, starches and certain sugars for many people, will greatly affect the distribution and particle size of cholesterol throughout the body. Mentioned in the information of the above different populations is an important type of food that contains vitamin K2. Natto, sauerkraut and cheese all contain varying amounts of vitamin K2 that when combined with vitamin D will ensure correct distribution of calcium, that may be found in soft tissue and can then redirect it into bones and teeth.

A lifestyle diet means that one should have the bases covered everyday and when this is combined with the right amount of exercise and sleep, it can be a powerful and super healthy combination. Social environment and attitude of mind on the joy of life can make a vital difference. Populations that care and integrate all ages in the same family unit or active domain increase the longevity of the individual. Diet, purpose for life and determination are lifestyle attributes to ensuring a long and healthy life.

The Power of the Mind.

One of the greatest assets that all people have is the mind. The amazing thing is it is so little used in a beneficial way. Knowing how to harness the mind’s power can have significant affects on every day health and enjoyment of life. I have come across an activity called mindfulness which is being aware of the present moment. A most impressive use of mindfulness was demonstrated on a small group of young children that all had been diagnosed with ADHD Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The first session seemed a little chaotic but after perseverance a positive calm outside of the session was demonstrated by several of the children that has greatly improved their overall health and ability to concentrate.

I am fascinated by the question of why keeping still and contemplating on feelings and emotions can give a deeper overall calmness. This well-being is a positive step to maintaining and regaining mental and physical health.

There is more than one way of utilising the power of the mind. As a child I was often told off for daydreaming. Yet those trips using my imagination were releasing beneficial endorphins and creating a world of super dimensions. As an adult I realised specific imaginary places can be visualised and revisited time after time. These scenarios heighten the enjoyment of life, for instance floating in warm tropical water accompanied by exotic sea life or stepping through a door into a paradise of wood life or the experiences of the wonders of nature.

Sometimes I have felt very tired through the day and longed for some relief. Then I can use what I call, complete rest. It is a technique that takes about twenty minutes to fulfil. I find a quiet spot where I will not be disturbed and sit down. There are two parts of creating a restful situation. First is to check every one of my muscles are fully relaxed in systematic order. Starting from the toes I relax them and then I double check my neck as tension is persistent in that area. When fully relaxed I close my eyes and think of nothing except my breathing and the sensation after each slow breath. I feel myself relaxing deeper into an enjoyable state of rest. If I am troubled by thoughts I use a technique of thinking of a word that I have previously made-up by taking any vowel and adding one or two consonants to it. The important point is the word has no meaning and connects to nothing. The reason is to nudge the mind into inactivity. Why this works is that I can not think of two things comprehensively at the same time and my train of disturbing thought has been redirected to a passive direction. So when I am aware of a thought I think of my chosen word and let it fade away until maybe another thought more distantly takes over. I keep up this process until there is silence. After this process I usually wake up after ten minutes of enjoyable sleep. Then slowly I rouse myself for the rest of the day.

Using my mind in a specific way has a host of different beneficial reasons. There can be uses from rest to fun and all while improving my potential both physically and mentally. A particular use can be for reliving stressful past events that are disturbing. This involves re-framing the recollection by altering the detail of the past event, so it no longer causes distress. Then there is enacting particular activity in the mind such as a judo manoeuvrer or successfully completing a swimming race. It is a proved way of increasing the probability of success in different sporting activities.

I hope more people will become aware of the natural capability of the mind and the scope of the various ways it can be used in an enjoyable and healthy way.

Statins.

We live in an increasingly aware world where the public is much more conscious of what they do and do not put into their bodies. Living longer does not necessarily look as appealing IF the quality of life is not all that it should be… and that is possibly why more and more people are turning to healthier lifestyle choices. Suffering ill health can be an isolating situation but in some instances it can highlight that a little knowledge can go a long way.

Drug companies are dependant on the sales of their products and the chemical culture that can be exhibited does attribute both miracle and horror stories. If used properly and appropriately then medicine can be a marvel but this is unfortunately not always the case. The use of statins in my opinion is very much like putting the cart before the horse.

Did you know that statins are the largest prescribed drug in the UK? The prime objective of statins is to reduce the level of cholesterol. This is done in the belief that a specific level will ensure protection from heart attacks and stroke.

The evidence supports the fact that people with higher cholesterol levels live longer and have less experiences of Alzheimer’s, it is of course a management of the good and bad cholesterol that is important. There is not and never has been a magic cholesterol number that will ensure not having a heart attack or stroke.

In my view interfering with the level of cholesterol is potentially highly dangerous as it can result in increasing the small particles of cholesterol that have been identified as accumulating in places that are not good for efficient blood flow through the arteries.

Everything has a use and cholesterol is essential for building new cells and when there is a tear in the artery wall, it can plug that damage. The body constantly moderates the production and quantity of cholesterol. From this total amount of cholesterol there are divisions of jobs, such as some cholesterol will clean the artery of refuse and dispose of it through the liver. Other parts of cholesterol will be ferried through the arteries by triglycerides. The number of triglycerides will depend on the type of food that is being eaten and the important part is the size of cholesterol allotted to the triglyceride, this will depend on the initial quantity of cholesterol which has been accumulated in the first place. The probability is that reducing the total amount of cholesterol and a higher number of triglycerides would result in small particles of cholesterol, this is exactly what you do not want in your bloodstream.

Statins definitely will reduce the level of cholesterol and at the same time stop the body from producing highly beneficial substances from the liver such as CoQ10 and other important chemicals which are essential for the heart. Statins have anti-inflammatory properties that can not be isolated from the reduction in cholesterol, so any benefit from the statin more probably is the anti-inflammatory effect. A little known fact that might now be more widely known due to the increase in knowledge about wellbeing is that the beneficial ant-inflammatory effect can be obtained by eating green vegetables, superfoods and drinking pomegranate juice.

Talking about the effects of statins, in recent tests it has been established statins inhibit the affect of vitamin k2 which clears and redirects excess calcium from soft tissues such as arteries into bones and teeth. Interfering with vitamin k2 would allow calcium to harden and turn into bone within the artery and ultimately block it. The point of taking statins in the first place is to improve blood flow, not stop it.

Statins can do harm in two ways. Firstly the side effects can include issues such as muscle cramp and increase instances of Alzheimer as well as diabetes. The second difficulty that can be associated to statins is the illusion that by taking a pill, it will somehow improve the cardiovascular system. This can be done but definitely not by taking statins.

I would advise anybody told by a medical practitioner to take statins to look for themselves at the evidence. People with high levels of the right type of cholesterol are less likely to have medical problems. Information is the ally in good health and fitness and the options might not always be as limited as you could think.

Statins work by cutting off important biological functions of the liver and there is a real risk of liver and kidney damage. It is vital to question something that would compromise the wellbeing of organs, as it is through their function that reversal of many serious medical conditions can be achieved. The vascular system is only able to function properly, if undamaged.

Taking statins could greatly increase the risk of hardening of the arteries and seriously interfere with the overall good health of the body.

A positive step to reduce the likelihood of heart attack and stroke is to alter the type of food that is eaten regularly. Increase the amount of fat and reduce sugars, carbohydrates and starch. The aim is to reduce the number of triglycerides thus ensuring large safe particles of cholesterol are distributed through the blood system. Eating fat will not make you fat unless it is combined with sugar. It is the sugar that will turn into body fat. There is only one type of fat that should be avoided and that is hydrogenated fat or oil. That is because of man-induced deformity of the structure of the fat which could result in medical problems.

Do not think for one moment there is a stark choice of taking statins or having a heart attack. There are better ways of improving the vascular system that are not harmful to vital organs and taking statins is not the only answer.

Potential Danger.

Is it only me or are some extremely important issues so obvious but an absolute age is taken to do anything to rectify them? We live in a fast-paced and policy-driven society whereby much is done to seemingly show that people are put at the heart of political momentum yet it has taken months for an in-depth inquiry to return a result that does not adequately address the problem of flammable cladding on the outside of tall buildings. The reported pictures of the actual fire clearly show the fast spreading flames jumping from floor to floor with no proper flame retardant barrier.

Banning the use of any flammable cladding to the outside of any tall building could have been imposed the day after the original fire had taken place. I think it is an insult and a disgrace that this obvious action is not put into place now and that such an inappropriate length of time has been taken to investigate the highly influential issue.

What is the point of an in-depth enquiry that fails to address one of the major influencers in a situation and what is worse is that the author of the inquiry ironically has suggested that a ban on flammable materials would have been the correct action, although that was not incorporated in her own official findings.

This situation is as serious as it can get and when final decisions on the material used is conducted on a desktop simulation that does not include an actual real fire situation, this surely indicates that the findings of a report do not match the required needed response.

Using flammable material plus creating an artificial wind space between the original structure is the ideal creation to facilitate and spread flames up the outside of a tall building. Tall buildings naturally, because of their structure, create an updraft of air. Making a space for any flame to jump from floor to floor is an obvious design fault. What is clearly frustrating for people is that you do not have to have technical training to easily see an obvious issue and point it out, you do not need to have had the qualifications to have witnessed a horrendous misuse of funds or need to have had experience in planning to know that what happened must not ever happen again.

When are the authorities actually going to do? What many people can see and state unequivocally is that the current building regulations in regard to tall buildings with cladding that is not fit for purpose, needs to be rectified.

The practice of aesthetically patching up ageing and tall buildings by turning them into potential Roman candles should never have taken place in the first place. The fact that current building regulations do not appear to have any influence to stop future tragedies is unbelievable, shocking and it does shame those who should be in a position to put a stop to it. It is not enough to simply give an overall report of identifiable hazards, potential danger to many lives is a subject for a needed visible response and this can only be through a practical demonstration of improved building regulations.

There is nothing more important than foundations for life being put as paramount in any political arena. If obvious issues are not put right in favour of looking at a more subtle and again lengthy approach to how buildings are maintained, then there is a vital missing factor at the heart of our government and that is one which would deem it unable to acknowledge the potential harm that could be inflicted. There is a potential danger in the building and maintaining policies of tall buildings and this is one that has to be revised.

Emergency Treatment.

What is an emergency? I have for a while had a swollen lump under the right side of my chin. It had not caused me any problems and had been seen by a GP who causally indicated that something might need to be done about it in the future. Until then there was no considered emergency as I had no issues with it, I continued on… many people will understand the dread that one can feel when faced with the need for a dentist and I started to develop a problem with my tooth. I booked in and underwent quite a lengthy procedure with an excellent dentist but it was detected that as treatment went ahead I had something known as a calcified salivary gland. Aha, explanation for one swollen right under chin and the dentist referred me to the hospital because the stone which had developed and blocked my salivary duct was large and would require minor surgery to fix. I still had no symptoms from the swelling and had no real issues apart from the aesthetic concerns, of the enlarged one half of my chin, but unbeknown to me all of that was dramatically about to change.

Fast forward to a twenty four hours post me not feeling any symptoms of the calcified salivary gland and I had the misfortune to contract an extremely painful sore throat. The main symptom of a salivary duct stone or stones are pain in the mouth, face and neck. This pain can become worse just before or while eating a meal because the salivary glands producing saliva to facilitate the process of breaking down food cannot flow through the route of the duct, consequently it backs up in the gland, swells and causes pain. I did not have those symptoms apart from the facial swelling and at the time it was because of a sole sore throat that I was not able to eat or drink without severe discomfort. I was unsure what the source of the sore throat was and if it was linked to the calcified salivary gland. I have had two heart issues and need to drink a lot of liquids and eat certain foods to keep up with my health regime but the sore throat was causing me severe distress as I could not take in enough fluids or food. One of the worst symptoms of a calcified salivary gland is an inflammation or infection of the glands, as my sore throat was unlike anything I had previously experienced and on the third day that the symptoms began to progressively get worse I sought help form the local hospital accident and emergency facility. At first I was seen by a nurse who reassured me the sore throat, all though swollen and sore, was in her opinion was not life-threatening. She explained that as I did not have a temperature the throat was not infected, I could wait to see a doctor but there was no other help offered to relieve the sore throat and I was encouraged not to endure further waiting. While this would have been fair if the sore throat had been simply that, I felt that because of my heart condition it would be better to see a doctor. I waited four hours for the doctor to confirm the sore throat was not a result of an infection. He did not look in my mouth at all and the point for me at that time was that infection or not, I needed help. The doctor offered his hand to me and the consultation was over without any relief whatsoever for what at the time I hoped was simply an extremely sore throat. Without any further consultation subsequently under the impression I had received correct medical advice it took four more days of excruciating pain and discomfort to discover that things were not right. After making an appointment at the local surgery the nurse immediately, after examining the large swelling under my jaw bone, stated it was infected and needed a course of antibiotics. Penicillin was prescribed.

There are two important points about this incident. At the accident and emergency I was treated as if I had only a sore throat and no mention or link was made to the calcified salivary gland nor was there any indication for anyone to make plans for a treatment of it. When I brought up the potential possibility of the sore throat being a result of the calcified salivary gland, this was ignored. I suffered days of absolute agony trying to treat a sore throat with lozenges and cold remedies when in fact I had infected glands that needed Penicillin. There can be a real lack of knowledge which can lead to someone seeking medical help and if guidelines or restrictions influence an emergency diagnosis then there can be urgent issues that are missed! Be aware, as I was not at the time, that a lack of temperature should not be the only criteria for deciding if a sore throat or any particular condition is a result of being infected or not. I have noticed although I know my throat is infected there are times when there is no raised temperature but an underlying condition. There might be many reasons why there is no temperature despite an infection and these are factors such as age, the stage of condition development, if the immune system is not working effectively, and many more. My infected glands have stopped me from following my health regime and that interferes with my intake of superfoods and water, which are my medication and this for me is a potentially life-threatening situation. I now unfortunately have all of the above symptoms of severe and excruciating pain in the face and mouth and because of a lack of emergency awareness, have suffered terribly for days longer that needed to have been the case. The dentist has now had to upgrade and write another referral to the hospital.

Medical advice could and should be life-saving. An inflammation of the glands could lead to an infection of the blood and left long-term this could have life-threatening consequences. I understand that in the NHS and particularly in the accident and emergency facility there must be rules of procedure. But at the same time should they not be applied with concern for the well-being of the patient? An elderly lady was diagnosed by the local GP to be in need of an immediate blood transfusion. The lady was taken privately to the hospital for the transfusion. On arrival, the hospital staff said they had not been informed and could not help. While a debate ensued the elderly lady who needed an emergency transfusion of blood was not helped at all and despite being noted as qualifying as an emergency patient, was deemed as the wrong type of emergency and did not fit the criteria being use by the hospital. The next day the lady again attended the hospital for the delayed blood transfusion and the attending doctor was greatly alarmed at her condition. The doctor decided to transfuse blood into both arms. The transfusion was completed successfully but the delay could have had serious consequences and it did bring up the question of how emergencies are decided on and treated in the hospital A and E. My case has highlighted to me how much of a consequence our experiences of deciding on an emergency can have and how much of an impact this can have on our health. Deciding if a condition is an emergency can take but a few moments and it can have such drastic consequences on a person’s life.

Bullying.

One thing about life that you can be assured of is that sooner or later a social contact will happen. It is true that for a lot of these occasions this can be a pleasant experience until one day completely unaware you could find yourself a target of bullying. This phenomena can arise anywhere and at any time.

The implications of the trauma of bullying can potentially be extreme. It is a problem that if not dealt with can cause psychological and physical harm. An aspect of bullying is that it could be a slow but progressive cycle of abuse. At first one might ignore the unpleasant instances with the hope the bullies will tire of their actions. There is no one set rule as for how to respond to a bullying situation but for many ignoring a bad example of demoralising and conflicting behaviour is not the best way of handling things. If no resistance to the violent or violating attacks has been shown, in fact in a group environment a pack mentality might be established and others may join in the bullying abuse and there has been evidence to show an increase in an assault on a victim.

At the first instance help should be sought out by informing people of authority. This of course means ignoring the feelings of possible guilt or shame and moving to make a situation public through talking to other people. There can often be a blame game psychological pattern whereby the victim of abuse could feel an obligatory, if misplaced, loyalty for individuals who disrespect their human dignity. This is a dangerous scenario because in feeling ashamed or at fault the victim could then be the target for further infringement of their physical or mental well-being. A pattern of behaviour can escalate from one single act.

Bullying feeds on silence. If revealed there is a greater chance to stop an invidious practice.

There are so many tragic consequences of bullying that have occurred because the subject is reluctant to disclose what is happening to them. In some cases blackmail is an easy control device that will ensure silence of the victim and a perpetuating control over their physical and mental state.

It is far too easy when not in a situation to state a particular action answer as a response to bullying. The if I were or I would scenario is simple to state in thought but in practice might vary considerably. When not in any danger of the consequence bravado is an often default position to take but nevertheless not facing a fear could mean endless torment.

Removing the burden of being bullied can mean that humiliation and physical trauma can be halted. It is important to understand that bullying can be seen in multiple formats and that no one is immune to the influence of what it can do. Mental anguish can lead to serious psychological implications and subsequent physical issues that have life altering possibilities. The potential long-term damage of bullying can vary according to the degree in which it has been experienced and the vulnerability of the individual involved but what is true for every case is that bullies only do harm to that of their victims and themselves.

Repair and healing from bullying can take time. Recovering from an abusive situation that has been debilitating can mean that wounds of a mental and physical nature have to be healed and issues that might have been repressed could need to be resolved. The important thing to remember is that there is an increasing number of bodies and organisations who are now in place to help. Public awareness of this social problem has heightened. It is imperative that from the grass roots, in schools bullying is brought out into the consciousness of the class and this type of behaviour is deemed as not acceptable. People can heal and they can rebuild their sense of self again. Well-being and integrity of every society depends on an ability to have empathy and recognise if someone needs help, how best to give that assistance. Bullying has no place in any society. It is in continuing to stop the cycle of bullying and increasing people’s awareness of how to help that success from this kind of issue can be attained.

The Alzheimer's Example.

It is quite likely that in every body’s life there will come a time that for your own good health you will be required to make a medical choice. In some cases it is an immediate stark decision of a medical operation or death... When it comes to long-term medical deterioration there can often be surprising options which at first are not apparent, but how do you get to know about them and what do you do when you learn the facts?

Mainstream medicine has a set process for treating recognizable conditions but what happens if a condition simply carries on deteriorating? Then it is down to the patient or the patient’s relatives to research the possibility of alternative treatment.

I am particularly interested in a real life instance of a mature lady who had a severe and deteriorating condition of Alzheimer's. The lady who had the onset of Alzheimer’s unfortunately also started to suffer from Epilepsy and a particularly bad episode left her prone to a rapid decline in her state of health. Losing her ability to take care of physical needs meant that she was taken into medical care. Distressed and not being able to recognise her own child, the lady started to make repeated calls for help and the situation became desperate for her son. Fortunately the relative did not accept the prognosis for their future and decided to look into the potential of alternative methods of treatment for his mother. He found that good results could be achieved by radially changing his mum’s diet and this along with chosen physical and mental exercises resulted in her condition improving dramatically and to such an extent that she after time regained fully her lost cognitive ability. Eventually the benefits of the regime meant that they could terminate prescribed medication and as a result of her mental recouperation, physical ability was regained.

The patient started the Mediterranean diet, but supplemented it with Walnuts, Brazil nuts and a good variety of greens, such as Spinach, Asparagus and Kale. Mental stimulus was a viable resource that when introduced to the lady brought about an astounding level of improvement, memories and recognition of important people in her life suddenly came back to her. The diet was implemented in conjunction with the stimulation of the mind and this demonstrated that the brain does have a remarkable capability of healing itself. Medication does not have to be the only answer. In some cases it might be reduced or in certain examples eradicated completely, this does depend on the circumstances as situations and severity can vary. However what has been proven is that if the body is given the right diet and the brain stimulated with activity even the most debilitating of conditions could be halted or improved upon. In this example the Alzheimer’s Society had since advocated the methods used to improve the lady’s health and has started to circulate the knowledge about their impressive journey. The tools of diet and knowledge about the power of certain foods has even been recognised by the son’s own place of employment, a law firm where you will now find an altered menu, one designed to highlight the benefits of the brain boosting ingredients. Interestingly as the son has suggested, many of these health promoting foods are in themselves shaped like brains, possibly nature’s own gentle reminder to us.

One particular case would not normally be sufficient to base future actions on but increasingly evidence has shown that the population is turning towards alternative superfoods and alternative active ingredients to put them on a naturally healthy route to improvement. Superfoods are of course well known and used throughout the beauty industry but sometimes more controversially applied to the world of health. Historically, since ancient times herbs, plants and natural resources have been used to promote health in the mind and body. It is heartening to see that when the mainstream medical profession state there is no known curer for the condition of Alzheimer's, there is such an inspirational example found in the endeavours of a patient and her family and their successful investigation into finding an alternative strategy that has re-written what was thought of as possible for them.

I strongly believe the body is a chemical storehouse that just needs the right conditions to naturally rebuild and strengthen it’s vitality. I am not alone with this thought as Hippocrates the father of mainstream medicine is reported to have said Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food.

When mainstream medical institutions can offer no help to a successful treatment of their patients, do not think for a moment there is no way forward. It is important to be aware of your own circumstances and the potential of what might naturally be available to improve a condition. A true groundbreaking advance in medicine was achieved by a parent who took on the research to find a working cure for his child and this was when all medically known doors were thought to be closed to him. This I suggest is what makes us as humans strive for what may at first seem impossible.
