Stories in the Lonesome October

The Seventh Victim. Photo credit: RCA

Let’s start with the most recent one. My Halloween story ‘Wolves at the Door’ was published by the good folks over at Dread Imaginings. I’m proud of this story. I wrote it (and two others) during my first two-week quarantine.

The Cherry Orchard by Anton Chekhov

While much of this play went over my head, the central idea—a family driven from their home by a changing financial landscape—does feel oddly relevant.

The Weir by Conor McPherson
Rate this book

A play that finds the ghosts and fear in the lost connections of life. As I get back into theatrical reading, this is the atmospheric place to start.

Mouthful of Birds by Samanta Schweblin

While there are some strong pieces, Mouthful of Birds didn’t work for me overall. It’s not a bad collection; but it’s surreal nature often came off a little under-baked.

Gothic

A horror novel that modernizes the old school horror novel. Fracassi’s cinematic writing style lends itself well to the escalating terror; Do you read Tyson Parks?

All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque

This is a novel of remarkable horror and a steep nihilism; teenagers sent to a terrible war. Hard to stomach, but it’s certainly essential reading.

The Old Man And The Sea by Ernest Hemingway

First time I’ve read this since school; a simple story told with such emotion and plain-spoken suspense. A classic for a reason.

Stranger Things Happen by Kelly Link

Even in Kelly Link’s first collection her intoxicating blend of magic realism and slight horror is here in full force. While I like her newer collections more, there is so much to love here.

Baltimore, or, The Steadfast Tin Soldier & the Vampire by Mike Mignola

A layered story of war, supernatural plague, and a broken soldier turned avenging angel. The breadth of imagination and monstrosity in this tale is very impressive; Golden and Mignola make quite the pair.
