I don't know that there are big unanswered questions, but I am fascinated by alternative realities. There have been turns in my life where I made big choices that resulted in big changes. I'd be curious to explore how things would have been if I had jumped sooner, ended relationships sooner, or made bolder choices. (less)

"My Letter to Fear: Essays on Life, Love and the Search for Prince Charming" is a collection of essays. It's not really a memoir. It isn't women's fiction, but it doesn't fit into a traditional non-fiction slot. If anything, it is a collection of very short stories, but even that is hard to sell.

The best advice I got from an agent was to imagine shelves in a book store. Where does your book belong? Even if you think it could fit in many places, pick one. It's very tough to market a book as all things to all people.

Develop your platform before reaching out to agents. If you have 20,000 engaged twitter followers, you will be a more interesting prospect to agents than if you have no social media presence. If you are known in your field, make sure you tell them that in your query. Really anything that makes you easier to market is going to make you more attractive to agents-- and make no mistake, you are marketing yourself every bit as much as you are marketing your book.

I spent a lot of time over at Writer's Digest going through their new agent listings. Those people are actively pursuing new clients and are often more receptive to new authors. And be very sure to read all the interests and requirements before sending the query. Nothing will get you tossed faster than sending a form letter that doesn't take into consideration what the agent is looking for.

Good luck!
