I was born in New York City during Millard Fillmore’s administration. At least, I feel like that sometimes.
My Dad was a decorated ace in the Royal Air Force during the Battle of Britain, having received the Distinguished Flying Cross. I think that’s where I got my love of aviation from. My Mom was a saint. Period.
I soloed on Halloween, 1968, from the old Burnside-Ott Aviation Training Center at Opa-Locka Airport in Florida, graduating from North Miami Senior High that same year. I remember it was a beautiful little Cessna 150. I graduated from Northern Arizona University, in Flagstaff, in 1974, having received a Bachelor’s degree in writing and a Master’s in history. Flagstaff is the home of Lowell Observatory, where Percival Lowell did s

The Cult of Infinite Complexity

I want to make it quite clear from the outset that I am not a neo-Luddite. And I repudiate those who would embrace such a philosophy; for example, Ted Kasinsky. But there is such a thing as the law of diminishing returns. Allow me to illustrate my point with a metaphor. Then I'll put this metaphor into a pragmatic context, with real life examples.
Let's say you have to buy breakfast cereal. Simpl Read more of this blog post »

Hilaire Belloc
“When I am dead, I hope it may be said: "His sins were scarlet, but his books were read.”
Hilaire Belloc

Ray Bradbury
“The wind outside nested in each tree, prowled the sidewalks in invisible treads like unseen cats.
Tom Skelton shivered. Anyone could see that the wind was a special wind this night, and the darkness took on a special feel because it was All Hallows' Eve. Everything seemed cut from soft black velvet or gold or orange velvet. Smoke panted up out of a thousand chimneys like the plumes of funeral parades. From kitchen windows drifted two pumpkin smells: gourds being cut, pies being baked.”
Ray Bradbury, The Halloween Tree

Ray Bradbury
“...Until they stood at last by a crumbling wall, looking up and up and still farther up at the great tombyard top of the old house. For that's what it seemed. The high mountain peak of the mansion was littered with what looked like black bones or iron rods, and enough chimneys to choke out smoke signals from three dozen fires on sooty hearths hidden far below in dim bowels of this monster place. With so many chimneys, the roof seemed a vast cemetery, each chimney signifying the burial place of some old god of fire or enchantress of steam, smoke, and firefly spark. even as they watched, a kind of bleak exhalation of soot breathed up out of some four dozen flues, darkening the sky still more, and putting out some few stars.”
Ray Bradbury, The Halloween Tree

Ray Bradbury
“Suddenly the day was gone,
night came out from under each tree and spread.”
Ray Bradbury, The Halloween Tree

Douglas Adams
“The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.”
Douglas Adams, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
