He was a beautiful, intelligent pigeon who had flown into my brother’s dorm room at Texas A&M University. Kenneth brought Walter home at the end of spring semester and our mother, JoAnn, a science teacher, decided that Walter could stay in the house as long as he stayed on top of the refrigerator. He made it a game to sneak down any time she wasn’t looking.
Walter amazed us! He could hold long conversations with us, obviously understanding that we were talking to him and asking him questions. We could not understand his answers, but we knew that he was trying his best to communicate with us.
Walter really did play ball with Schatzie, the family dachshund, and we really did have a huge, clumsy cat named Bear. It was not unusual to see Walter in the hallway or in the backyard, pushing a ball up to whoever was around to play with him, including us.
Walter walked on the sidewalk next to my mom to school, obeyed the street crosswalk guard, and quickly became my mother’s class’s favorite. He loved school and constantly flew from classroom to classroom throughout the school. He played with the elementary school kids, pulled their hair, and knocked their pencils off of their desks.
Later, when I drove to college, Walter wanted to ride along with me. He flew up onto the roof of my little Ford Pinto and crossed from side to side as I tried to shoo him away.
My mom always stressed that Walter was free to come and go as he pleased. One day, after a week’s absence, he showed up with a female pigeon and stayed up on top of the roof of the house for the day. She evidently wanted a different starter home, and the next day they were gone. We never saw Walter again, but we always wished the best for him. He truly is the inspiration for this story!

The constant thread in all of my writing, and what inspires me, is that there is a thread of kindness that permeates all of human existence. In Chrissie's Run, in The Baby Sea Turtle, and in A Pigeon's Tale, nothing is possible without kind help from others in life. I think that our current culture has become mean and self serving, on the surface. But, if a disaster occurs, everybody pulls together to help those in need of assistance. This is a trait of humanity that we have to ensure passes on to our children. I try to express this wonderful quality of humanity in my writing, lest we be doomed to repeat the horrors of past centuries. People are kind, ideology gets in the way.(less)
