I've written a few posts about it, linked below. First is to know your worth. You don't have to write for free "for exposure." There are publications out there that pay (albeit a small amount) for newbie writers. Second is to accept criticism as it's an important part of the industry. Third is to learn the business side, especially invoicing and expenses. The last, and most important, part of being a writer is being in charge of your own rewards and self care. There aren't incentives like at other jobs for hard work. Treat yourself to a massage or special dinner once you turn in a big project. Good luck!

In my years of travel, I’ve become smarter about the animal encounters I engage in. I learned my lesson about riding elephants in Thailand and have avoided places like tiger “sanctuaries” and poorly run zoos and aquariums. So when I planned a trip to the Crystal River area in Florida, I was unsure about the […]

John Berendt
“If you go to Atlanta, the first question people ask you is, "What's your business?" In Macon they ask, "Where do you go to church?" In Augusta they ask your grandmother's maiden name. But in Savannah the first question people ask you is "What would you like to drink?”
John Berendt, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

Suzanne Collins
“You love me. Real or not real?"
I tell him, "Real.”
Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay

Russell Brand
“The most potent tool in maintaining the status quo is our belief that change is impossible.”
Russell Brand, Revolution

Alain de Botton
“Everyone returns us to a different sense of ourselves, for we become a little of who they think we are. Our selves could be compared to an amoeba, whose outer walls are elastic, and therefore adapt to the environment. It is not that the amoeba has no dimensions, simply that it has no self-defined shape. It is my absurdist side that an absurdist person will draw out of me, and my seriousness that a serious person will evoke. If someone thinks I am shy, I will probably end up shy, if someone thinks me funny, I am likely to keep cracking jokes.”
Alain de Botton, On Love

Lindy West
“Women matter. Women are half of us. When you raise every woman to believe that we are insignificant, that we are broken, that we are sick, that the only cure is starvation and restraint and smallness; when you pit women against one another, keep us shackled by shame and hunger, obsessing over our flaws rather than our power and potential; when you leverage all of that to sap our money and our time—that moves the rudder of the world. It steers humanity toward conservatism and walls and the narrow interests of men, and it keeps us adrift in waters where women’s safety and humanity are secondary to men’s pleasure and convenience.”
Lindy West, Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman
