Cat Cafés are an upcoming trend in the world’s major cities. The main attractions are the cats who can be watched, played with, and in many circumstances, adopted. The first cat café was opened in Taiwan in 1998 and quickly became a tourist destination, drawing cat fans from all over the globe.

TYLER’S THANKFUL THURSDAY

Tyler: Do you know what day it is, Little? It’s Thankful Thursday.

Little: I don’t feel like being thankful today. I’m too sleepy.

Tyler: Oh, no! We have such a good life with our cohabitors. You must be thankful for something.

Little: I’ll think about it later. Right now I’m going to take a nap.

Tyler: Aha! That’s something to be thankful for— a nap!

Little: But I take a nap every day. What’s the big deal?

Tyler: You’ve been living in this nice house for ten years, so maybe you’ve forgotten how dangerous life on the streets can be. A cat has to be vigilant every minute. That’s why I learned to sleep sitting up, so predators wouldn’t get me.

[image error]Little: You’re right, Tyler. I’m thankful for my nap.

ALMOST SPRING, photographs

We still have a few weeks until the official beginning of spring, but here in Portland (in between the snow storms) spring is springing. The tenacity of the flowers as they ignore the cold and bloom their little hearts out gives such a feeling of hope and optimism.

Cats have many reasons for inappropriate litter box use. If your cat suddenly starts peeing outside the box, have him checked for an infection or inflammation of the lower urinary tract before moving on to a psychological cause.

18 Extra-Amazing Facts About Me, by Little

A few of my kitty blogger friends are posting a tell-all about themselves and have asked us, and anyone else who would like to, to play along.  The fun began with the Stunning Cathy Keisha who pawed the post “18 Extra-Amazing Facts About Me”. Then the lovely Valentine carried on with “18 Extra-Amazing Facts About Valentine the Black Persian Cat”. Little decided it was her turn. (She even woke up from her nap to do the questions!) And here we are!

18 Extra-Amazing Facts About Little.

Favorite smell— Tuna flakes.
Last time I hissed— This morning. It’s a game I play with my brother Tyler. He seems to think he can bully me but I just give him the hiss and he backs down. Then we play with da Bird and then we nap. Then we do it all over again.
Favorite pizza— I’m not a pizza kind of gal. Maybe if you put tuna flakes on it…
Favorite Flower— Not really a flower, but I love to eat grass.
Favorite dog breed— N.O.N.E.
Favorite ice cream— All of it! Except my cohabitors won’t let me have any. Something about being bad for my teeth.
Pet peeve— Personal pet peeve: Tyler. Why did they bring home another cat when I’m all anyone could ever need? Global pet peeve: Overpopulation. My motto is Spay and Neuter all the way.
Shorts or jeans— I prefer there to be fabric between my lovely velvet fur and skin. Jeans are okay, but silk skirts even better.
Color of your PTU— Not a clue.
Color of your eyes— Gold-green and gorgeous.
Favorite food— I thought we covered this. Tuna flakes.
Least favorite food— Anything over a few hours old.
Favorite Holiday— My birthday.
Night owl or morning person— Awake periods are morning and evening; everything else is nap time.
Favorite day of the week— They’re all good because my time is my own
Do you have a nick name?— No.
Favorite music— When I first came home from the shelter, I liked to listen to jazz. Now I’m much older and would rather listen to the birds. Or nothing.

Tattoos— That’s an odd question to end on, and I don’t have a good answer. Only furless people require pretty ink pictures to cover their nakedness.

Well, there you have it. Thank you, Little, for taking time out of your afternoon nap to be with us. Special thanks to Keisha and Valentine for their inspiration. Be sure to check out their blogsites for more amazing info.

10 Reasons Why Everyone Should Adopt a Cat, by Mary Nielsen

When Mary Nielsen approached me with “10 Reasons Why Everyone Should Adopt a Cat”, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Then she told me she had created the infographic to motivate more people to adopt cats instead of buying them, “…giving them (cats) a new home that they deserve…” and I knew we were kindred spirits. Her website, FelineLiving.net, is fairly new, but she states  “…I have been a cat lover forever and I started the site to help other cat parents care for their felines.” I found the infographic useful, informative, and pretty. I hope you do too. Be sure to check out her website for other cat- and pet-centric articles.

Please spread the word about wonderful reasons to adopt a pet!

’10

Mary Nielsen founded FelineLiving.net and is a passionate cat lover, blogger, and part-time music teacher. She founded her blog to share her ups and downs of being a pet parent to a bunch of adorable kittens and cats. When she is not playing with them or teaching, you can find her experimenting in the kitchen.

Good stuff! Please share!~

There is a conflict between those who believe cats should run free and those who think they should be kept inside for their own safety. Though cats need stimulation to thrive, our outdoors is fraught with dangers in the form of cars, wildlife, and unfortunately, a smattering of malicious people.

CAT FOUND, a Valentine’s Day flash fiction

“I think I found your cat.”

There was a pause on the other end of the line, then a cautious, “Yes?”

I petted the friendly, orange-striped stranger who had made herself at home in my lap. “Burberry? She has a collar with this number on it.  Is your cat missing?”

Again the pause. “Burberry. Yes, but she has been missing for over a year. We’d given up hope. Are you sure you have the right cat?”

“A red tabby with one white foot.”

“That’s her!” the woman shrieked. Then I heard her call to someone, “Danny! You won’t believe! Someone’s finally found our precious Burberry!”

Plans were made, numbers exchanged, and before I knew it, I was pulling up in front of a small southeast Portland bungalow with a carrier full of cat. I felt good. Finally after all the years of following lost cat websites, I’d found one right in my own back yard! I’m a cat lady myself, and though mine are all indoors, stuff happens. I sympathized with anyone whose cat went missing.

“Lynley Cannon,” I said to the elderly lady who had the door open before I’d pulled to a full stop. “And Burberry.”

“And I’m Fiona, Oh do come in. I’d like you to meet someone.”

She guided me to the living room where a lanky teenage boy sat slumped on the couch. He stood when he saw me.

“Danny, this is Lynley. See? She’s brought your Burberry back to you.”

Danny eyed me uncertainly, as if this might be some kind of trick.

“Here she is. Should I let her out now?” I asked as the silence began to stretch.

“Yes,” Danny whispered, coming a cautious step closer. “Please.”

I placed the carrier on the floor and unlatched the gate. Instantly the cat was out and sniffing the scents of her old home.

Burberry explored the room with the solemn intensity of her species. Finally she came to Danny who hadn’t moved a muscle. Abruptly he crouched and held out his hand. Without hesitation, the tabby leapt into his lap and begin smoothing her lush sideburns across his cheek.

“She certainly remembers you,” I said to the boy, but he was too busy hugging the affectionate cat to notice.

Fiona took my elbow and led me away. “Thank you so much, Lynley. You have done an amazing thing. Burberry is more than just a feline friend, she is a therapy cat. Danny has an anxiety disorder, and the only thing that helps when he has an episode is Burberry. It was devastating when she was lost. We were beginning to give up hope, think we should look for another to take her place, but Danny was dead set against it. Now I’m glad we waited.”

I looked back at the two on the living room floor. The cheerful scene brought tears to my eyes.

“I’d better get going and leave you to your reunion. I do suggest getting her checked by your vet. She seems healthy, but you never know after such a long time.”

“Oh, we will, first thing.”

I started down the front steps when Fiona called after me, “Hold on, Lynley. I have something for you.”

She disappeared for a moment, then came running back, a red heart-shaped box in her hand. “Happy Valentine’s Day!”

I took the box of chocolates and thanked her. Once in my car, I tossed the box on the passenger seat. The fact that today was February fourteenth had totally slipped my mind.

The Daily Tyler

Here I am, king of the hutch.

…but the kitchen table is calling.

Hum, these belong to the cohabitors.

In fact, most everything here is theirs.

Wait! This is familiar.

Mine, finally mine!
