Week in Review Week 40 of 2025

This was a pretty intense week at work, but I managed to balance it out with intentional time at home with my family. I maintained my gym routine every morning and continued my reading streak, now at 2,134 days.

Week 40 Review

Monday

Monday was packed with meetings, including a scheduling mishap where two meetings with the same invite list were double-booked. “We joined one for 15 minutes, then dropped into the other while everyone else waited for us.”

Do They Need Advice or Just a Hug?

A few days ago, I encountered a note with a simple message: “Don’t give a lecture to someone who needs a hug.”

This simple phrase resonated deeply with me and sparked reflection on how I communicate with the people I care about most.

The Power of Listening

Often, people don’t want solutions when they’re upset; they want to be heard. I’ve learned this lesson the hard way through experiences with my daughters and in my marriage. When someone is struggling, my instinct is to jump in with advice, to fix the problem. But I’ve discovered that rushing to give advice often backfires.

Nods, Lightbulbs, and Why I Still Love Being a Builder

Over the last month and a half, I’ve spent considerable time giving presentations at work on how AI tools can help people in their day-to-day activities. Most of these sessions focus on software engineering tasks like writing code, automated testing, setting standards, and using tools like Jira more effectively.

The Art of Presenting

Whenever I’m asked to present, I try to imagine what I’d want as an audience member. My core principle is simple: “if someone asks me to sit through a presentation, they’d better capture my attention quickly and show me what’s in it for me.”

Hello 2023

It seems that my last post was from September 03, 2021, so perhaps at the “risk” of starting up this blogging thing once again, here’s what I wrote down as I sat down to ponder on what I’ve accomplished this past 2022. In no particular order:2022 in Retrospective Writing Both “I.C.Q.” and “The Big Score” were translated and published by Brazilian publisher Editora InVerso and can be found at my Books page.

The Big Score - First Draft

This past May 31st, I added the final touches to the first draft for what should become my third book and second Young Adult novel.Temporarily titled The Big Score and currently, at approximately 44,000 words, you could say that this book was the hardest I’ve written so far. While my previous book, “I.C.Q.," took me around thirty contiguous days to complete the first draft, The Big Score started our back in November 1st as part of National Novel Writing Month 2020, and was only completed seven months later.

I.C.Q. - A Novel

About the Book Auggie Benson is a high school senior boy who freelances as a software developer and hacker after school to improve his skills and make some money on the side. Expanding his clientele from AOL to I.C.Q. users led him to meet Clarissa, a high school senior from nearby Scarsdale, NY, beginning a love story that took place in the summer of 1997.Eventually, Auggie and Clarissa meet in real life and experience a couple of romantic days, cut short when she embarks on a month-long trip through Europe, a high school graduation gift from her parents.
