Hi Jerry,

Thanks for your question. I don't have personal experience along these lines. As for Mara's story, I have children, so I can (almost, but thankfully not quite) imagine how dreadful it would be to know I was going to lose them, either because of my illness or theirs. As for Scott's, I'm a stepmom, so I have some idea about what it's like to pour a ton of love and attention and affection into a child whose future is completely out of your control -- if something were to happen to my husband, it's possible I would never see my stepchildren again. I thought about those things as I wrote, but I won't pretend my hypothetical worries come close to the real ones that Mara and Scott, or your wife and daughter, actually experienced.

Thanks again for your question, and for your kind words about Five Days Left. I hope you have a wonderful summer. (less)

“He didn't need someone to fix the problem - there was no fixing it. He needed someone to acknowledge his feelings. Accept his pain. Agree that his heart was broken, and that it should be. And that it might stay broken for a long, long time.”
Julie Lawson Timmer, Five Days Left

“It’s not how we got here,” she said as she went. “Or even that we are here. It’s where we go from here.”
Julie Lawson Timmer, Mrs. Saint and the Defectives

“The thing about setting your life up so you could be completely alone was that you ended up completely alone.”
Julie Lawson Timmer, Mrs. Saint and the Defectives
