Matthew Landis teaches middle school history outside Philadelphia, where he seeks to make the past come alive in not-boring ways. He is a closet HALO fan, and can sometimes be found reading novels adapted from that video game. He is blessed with an amazing wife and two kids, and hopes to one day write a book that moves people like Lev Grossman, Jo Nesbo, Sharon Creech, Patrick Ness, or Ron Rash have moved him. He also hopes to achieve whatever level of literary fame allows a person to summer in Cape Town and go on endless safaris.

"Please trust me and just read this book. It’s so touching and so interesting. If there’s a tween you know who hasn’t found the right book yet to make them fall in love with reading, this is a worthy candidate for so many. "

"Oliver Prichard is not your typical seventh grader. He spends his weekends dressing up in Civil War clothes to reenact battles, and he does it with gusto. I love that about him. When this history buff is paired with Ella Berry, the girl who's fail..." Read more of this review »

You know, the world would be a very boring place if we all liked the same books. There are lots of blogs out there, and it's easy to get lots of different opinions. I often don't like the books others do, and I don't often..." Read more of this review »

This story is beautiful, tragic, hilarious, and hopeful. I think that's what Dave was after—to tell a story about a real thing in a real way that doesn't end in misery. To my knowledge, it is the only YA book tackling the destructive nature of porn, ...more

“Should I call 911?” Joe asked. “No, he’s fine,” Sergeant Tom said. “Just fainted. And gave himself a bloody nose.” Frank patted his face and stared at the blood in confusion. “What happened?” “You got shot,” Joe said. “Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of your truck.”

“Mary, Mother of all that is holy.” He’d heard his dad whisper that only once: when his little sister, Addie, had drawn stick figures all over their white couch with a Sharpie.”

“September of 1862 he enlisted with the 68th Pennsylvania Regiment in Philadelphia and died on July 5, 1863 at Gettysburg of dysentery. What’s that?” “It’s basically diarrhea,” Oliver said. How heroic. Killed by his own poop.”
