Edie Eckman presents Every Which Way Crochet Borders

Edie Eckman presents Every Which Way Crochet Borders

Edie Eckman presents Every Which Way Crochet Borders was our featured guest today on Yarn Thing podcast with Marly Bird.[image error]

Edie Eckman has her hands in many aspects of the fiber arts, teaching, writing, designing and editing. Her knit and crochet designs have appeared in many magazines, yarn company publications, pattern leaflets and books. Her books include: Beyond the Square Crochet Motifs, How to Knit Socks: Three Methods Made Easy, and The Crochet Answer Book. Her newest book, Around the Corner Crochet Borders, will be published in early 2010. Edie travels extensively teaching at conventions, shops and guilds.

[image error]Step-by-step instructions and symbol charts put these 139 creative new border designs within reach for beginning and advanced crocheters alike. If you’re ready to chart your own crocheted course, Edie Eckman offers plenty of helpful design advice, including how to choose an appropriate border for each project and how to incorporate an element from the main stitch pattern into a new border design. She then explains, with the help of close-up photos, how the same pattern can have dramatically different results depending on the weight of the yarn. With each pattern diagramed to approach in both rounds and rows, Every Which Way Crochet Borders is an inventive and invaluable resource.

Edie Eckman can be followed through her website:   www.EdieEckman.com , she has a Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Ravelry Designer page and Group.

Edie has visited the Yarn Thing podcast before, in 2014.

Tutorial for Easy Exquisite Cable Throw Knitting Pattern

[image error]Red Heart has a beautiful throw pattern that uses simple cables. Today I want to show you how to do the 4 stitch cable in the Exquisite Cable Throw Knitting Pattern. The classic knit cable pattern will never go out of style and is so comfy to wrap up with. Be sure to read through to the bottom of the post to see the video tutorial I put together for you.

*This post contains affiliate links. By clicking one of these links and making a purchase a small portion will go to support the blog. The price you pay does NOT change. Thank you for your support.*

About the Pattern:

When beginner knitters hear the word ‘cable’ they can sometimes get scared because they don’t know how to create them. I am here to tell you that the cables in this pattern are some of the simplest that you can find and are a great introduction into cables. Cables are made by moving the position of the stitches on your needle. By rearranging the stitches you get the twisted cable look.

In this pattern you will be working a 4 stitch cable pattern and garter stitch. There is a garter stitch boarder and it is worked on circular needles to accommodate the large number of stitches. Although the pattern calls for circular needles you will be working in rows.

The Exquisite Cable Throw pattern has both written and charted instructions. You can work from either, which ever you feel more comfortable with. As a special BONUS for you in the video tutorial I show you how I work the cables in both the English (Throwing) and Continental style of knitting.

Exquisite Cable Throw Materials:

RED HEART® Super Saver® Jumbo: 3 skeins 530 Orchid or RED HEART® Super Saver®: 6 skeins 530 Orchid
Susan Bates® Knitting Needles: 5.5mm [US 9] 36″ circular needle
Cable needle
Yarn needle
FREE Exquisite Cable Throw Pattern

Notes for successful cables:

As you start to work the pattern you will see that there is a 8 stitch and 8 row repeat in the pattern. In the stitch repeat there are 4 stitches of cable and 4 stitches of garter. Trying to keep track of where you are on in the pattern can require a lot of focus. To make it easier to know where you are I suggest that you use stitch markers.

[image error]If you watch the video tutorial you will see how I use removable stitch markers to know what row should have the next cable. I also use stitch markers to mark the start and end of the board stitches. Another spot that I like to use stitch markers is to denote each time I need to change from the cable stitch to the garter stitch sections.

There are many different types of stitch markers that you can purchase but I like to make my own and make them unique to me. If you want to make your own stitch markers you can check out my other posts on how to make removable stitch markers and knitting stitch markers.

Amy Berman shares the Mother Bear Project

Amy Berman shares the Mother Bear Project

Amy Berman shares the Mother Bear Project on the Yarn Thing podcast with Marly Bird.

A native of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, Amy Berman is a graduate of the University of Missouri, Columbia with a major in journalism.  She lived in the Pacific Northwest for almost 15 years and[image error] worked in advertising. Married and the mother of two children, she always wanted to make a difference for women and their children. She does that through Mother Bear Project which she founded in 2003 as a way to help children in Africa that are in regions highly affected by HIV/AIDS. She has traveled to Africa numerous times to distribute bears and to identify organizations who will distribute the bears as unconditional gifts of comfort and hope to children who often have too little of both.

The Mother Bear Project is dedicated to providing comfort and hope to children affected by HIV/AIDS in emerging nations, by giving [image error]them a gift of love in the form of a hand-knit or crocheted bear. The simple gift of a hand-knit bear with a tag signed by the knitter has touched children with the message that they are unconditionally loved.

The response has been overwhelming, with people wanting to help from all over the world. Thousands of patterns[image error] have been distributed, and wonderful bears have been received from people of all ages, backgrounds and knitting abilities.  It has brought people together to do something kind in the face of a horrible problem.

If you have a little time, there are pictures of children with their bears at THIS LINK. It is a precious collection, we think will have you gathering your materials and casting on right away.

Continue to follow the adventures of the Mother Bear Project at their website, www.MotherBearProject.orgplus there is a Facebook page and Ravelry Group.

If you missed getting to watch or hear this visit when it was live, it has been recorded and posted, the video from Marly’s studio is in her Facebook page, and the audio is at the podcast location: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/yarnthing/2017/05/30/amy-berman-shares-the-mother-bear-project

So many people love Scrubby yarn that Red Heart put together a 7 months of Scrubby Campaign to launch new Scrubby patterns just for you. Each month there is a different theme and I host a Facebook Live video to show you the patterns up close. Best of all you have a chance to win a $25 prize package from Red Heart just by watching the live event! Be sure to join me on the 12th each month (through September) on the Red Heart Facebook page to preview the newest collection of Scrubby patterns. This month features the new Scrubby Cotton.

*This post contains affiliate links. By clicking one of these links and making a purchase a small portion will go to support the blog, the price you pay is not changed. Thank you for your support* [image error] [image error] Scrubby started out offering one version that is a polyester yarn. This is great because it dries much faster than cotton yarn so that there is less change of the yarn going sour. After such a great response of Scrubby original Red Heart also had the Scrubby Sparkle. Now Red Heart has launch Scrubby Cotton to give all of the cotton lovers out there the ability to use the textured yarn of Scrubby for all of your washcloth and dishcloth patterns. [image error]

May’s theme is Spa Days and features Scrubby Cotton for all of the patterns. These FREE patterns are both knit and crochet. If you want to see more about the Spa Day patterns you can head over to the other post that I have.
