Knit A Super Bulky Blanket

[image error]Thick yarn making quick projects is a trend lately. Who doesn’t enjoy a quick project now and then? With the holidays less than six months away it is time to start thinking about how we will accomplish all that we want and thick yarn is a great answer. Today I want to share with you how to use Red Heart Irresistible to knit the Wonderful Big Stitch Throw, a super bulky blanket. Join me, and my mom, as we walk through some tips and tricks to work with super bulky yarn

*This post contains affiliate links. By clicking on one of these links and making a purchase a portion will go back to the blog. The price that you pay will not change. Thank you for your support of the blog.*

Red Heart yarn recently released a brand new #7 super bulky weight yarn called Irresistible. Irresistible is 90% acrylic and 10% wool. Coming in 21 colors you are sure to find something that will match what you are envisioning. This mega-thick yarn is the perfect choice for trendy fashion and home decor projects, including the Wonderful Big Stitch Throw from Red Heart.

Before you get started with Super Bulky Yarn:

Before you get started on your first ball of super bulky yarn you should consider that you will need to get a few additional tools.

To accommodate the thick yarn you will need a large hook or needles. When using the Red Heart Irresistible yarn it is suggested that you use a set of US 50 (25mm) knitting needles or a size Q (15mm) crochet hook.

Along with the larger needles and hooks you will need to purchase a set of finishing needles that will accommodate the yarn as well. Susan Bates has a great set that I love where the eye runs the whole length of the needle allowing the yarn to easily pass through. If you purchase the set from Susan Bates (on the Red Heart website) you will get a set of 5 needles to use on  a variety of yarns from thin to very thick yarn.

Oval Loom Kit

Finishing your Super Bulky Blanket Pattern:

We must also take into consideration how we will finish off the projects. Unlike using thinner yarn it is much easier for the ends to come out of a bulky weight yarn. In order to combat this I suggest that you split the yarn as you weave it in, I even go as far as pulling the two plies apart to make it more secure. Splitting the yarn will help it stick to itself and stay in place. One of the great things about Red Heart’s Irresistible super bulky yarn is that it is 10% wool. This means that it will felt to itself to make a more secure finishing of your project.

Wonderful Big Stitch Throw, a Super Bulky Blanket:

Who doesn’t love a handmade warm blanket on their couch for those chilly winter days? You can make blankets out of any thickness of yarn but using a super bulky yarn will show off the stitches and work up quickly for any deadlines that you have.

Lately while I have been out shopping I have noticed that there are a lot of bulky weight knit options in the store. Looking closer at those blankets I noticed that they are using roving, which will end up piling with use and washing. I believe that you are much better off making your own handmade version. Irresistible is the perfect option for blankets, since it slightly spun to help keep it all together.

Wonderful Big Stitch Throw Video Tutorial:

In the video tutorial I will show you how to cast on using the large needles, how to join a new ball of yarn and even how to weave in the ends.

Watch and work along with me and my mom as we make this beautiful quick blanket.

I wanted to design a piece that had easy construction and a stitch pattern that was interesting lace. Cardigans are a staple in my closet and living in CO it can go from 80 degrees to 50 degrees in a matter of hours in the fall so it is always nice to have something that can be thrown on over anything. The Goldenrod Crochet Cardigan fits the bill.

It is made in one piece beginning at the back, increasing for the sleeves is as easy as adding chain stitches at the beginning and end of a row where indicated in pattern. The pattern stitch could be a little tricky if the crocheter doesn’t understand that on the first repeat row of the pattern stitches it is necessary to chain X number of stitches then work into those chain stitches before you are back to the original piece. The edging incorporates post stitches to give texture around some solidity to such an open lace pattern around the body. Plus, the top chain draws the eye linear along the center of the body which is very flattering.

When I design, I try to make all my sweaters available in several sizes and flattering for all figures. This one in particular comes in several larger sizes and would fit just about anybody. Also, it is very easy to to customize and make longer if you want. It is as easy as doing one or two more repeats before adding chains for the sleeves (making sure to still end on the appropriate row number) then making sure that the same number of rows are added to the front of the sweater as well.

One last thing, you might want your cardigan to come in with some type of closure but don’t want to disrupt the look of the collar. I would add hook and I closures to the front right at the bust line if I were going to add a closure. With the lace being as open as it is it will stretch nicely over you breasts and make a nice look.

Yarn review – Thin yarn is my favorite to crochet with, especially when I am working in a lace pattern. I think it really makes a piece have that polished look rather than homemade. This yarn is fantastic because the combination of silk and wool make the piece breathable yet nice and warm.

Goldenrod Crochet Cardigan Materials:

Yarn: Elsebeth Lavold, Silky Wool, 50g/175m, 45% Wool, 35% Silk, 20% Nylon

Main Color (MC): color 091 Yellow Apple, 5 (6, 8, 9, 11, 12) balls
Contrast Color (CC): 090 Persimmon, 1 ball

Size US F/5 (3.75 mm) hook

Removable Stitch markers (or make your own)

Tapestry needle

GAUGE IS IMPORTANT:

As in all of the other garments that I make, I highly suggest making a hanging gauge swatch before you get started. This is important to see how gravity will alter the size of your cardigan after wearing it. Starting with a swatch will also save you the headache of making the wrong size before you even start. To make a hanging gauge swatch I start by making a swatch of the stitch pattern that is at least 6 inches square. Then I hang the swatch to a hanger or cloths line and add additional cloths pins to the bottom to simulate gravity. Take a before and after measurement of your swatch to see what happens to it.

If you missed the Live Facebook video be sure to mark your calendars for September. The theme for September is Holiday and if you are watching live there is a chance for you to win a $25 prize package from Red Heart Yarns. ONLY live watchers in the US and Canada are eligible. Watch the live video on the Marly Bird Facebook page.

After some review of comments and activity on their website Red Heart noticed that there are still quite a few people asking about basic shapes in crochet and knitting. They decided to combine this request with the scrubby yarn and the month of scrubby shapes was born. I will be honest, the crochet oval has always given me a little bit of trouble. If you also struggle with the oval, I have put together a video on how to make that particular pattern and share with you some of the tips and tricks that I have learned along the way.

Scrubby shapes are perfect for washing your face or your dishes but can also serve another purpose. Young children can learn their shapes and colors through these patterns. Make these as a baby gift or even for your own child. Kids will love the texture of the yarn as they play and explore with the scrubby shapes.

Let’s take a look at the six new patterns that are being offered in this collection.

Red Heart is offering 12 colors in the Ombre yarn giving you a lot of choices.

Dimensional Tuck Knitting by Tracy Purtscher

Dimensional Tuck Knitting by Tracy Purtscher

Dimensional Tuck Knitting by Tracy Purtscher was the new book we learned all about on the Yarn Thing podcast with Marly Bird.

Tracy Purtscher may be best known up till now as one of the finalists in Skacel’s Fiber Factor competition a few years ago. Of that experience she says that of all the she learned, she learned most about herself. A lot of the work she did was done in private and without her family being aware! Hard to believe that they would miss the creation of some of her [image error]fabulous pieces or her time investment.

Of her new book, Tracy says: “One of a knitter’s favorite things to do is create something with sumptuous texture, and the tuck stitch, a simple technique that adds surface design to a knitted garment, is the ultimate way to do just that. Tracy Purtscher has explored and perfected this technique in her exciting new book, Dimensional Tuck Knitting. In it, knitters will learn the basics of the tuck stitch and just how easy, versatile, and fun it is. This collection of more than 85 patterns and 10 projects pushes the boundaries of what the tuck stitch can do, offering unique textures that have never been seen before. Purtscher’s visionary treatments create faux cables, ropes, leaves, shells, and many other vibrant three-dimensional patterns. Perfect for any gauge of yarn, the tuck stitch is exceptionally versatile and well suited for any project. A stitch dictionary, tips, and step-by-step technique instructions are all included, making this the ultimate authority on the amazing tuck stitch.”[image error]

Tracy keeps a blog at www.Stringativity.Blogspot.com and all of her designs can be found listed in her Ravelry Designer page.

If you missed this when it was live, you’ll find the video available in Marly’s Facebook page and the audio is still available as an archived podcast episode: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/yarnthin...

Knitting How to: Make 1 M1 Invisible Increase

As you continue to increase your knitting skills you will find that there are many options to complete different tasks. The amount of ways to cast on and bind off are endless. You will also find many ways of increasing and decreasing. One of the techniques you can use to make an almost invisible increase is to work a make 1.

*This post contains affiliate links. By clicking one of these links and making a purchase a small portion of the sale will come to the blog. The price you pay is not altered. Thank you for your support of the blog.*

Make 1 increases are typically written in your pattern as a M1. Make 1 increase are made up of the string that is between two stitch on the row previously created.

Be sure to check what your pattern says, sometimes it will tell you if you should create a Make 1 Right or a Make 1 Left. The difference is the way that you enter your hook into the yarn loop. In the video I show you the best way to accomplish a Make 1 if there is no notation in your pattern.

Typically this increase is not done back to back, there are stitches in between. If you would do them back to back it would tighten the row below.

Now that you have learned how to create a virtually invisible increase, the make 1, I hope that your finished project is perfect.
