He finishes it and goes out onto the balcony to smoke a Marlboro Gold inhis boxers; it’s too hot to get dressed.

Leaning against the stone wall of the old house, he makes some space for
his hand amongst the red geraniums pots, packed together like the repository
where mommy works.

He sees Gina scrupulously sweeping the sidewalk in front of the entrance
with her old wicker broom, which is bigger than she is. She’s wearing a blue
dress with white flowers, and her inevitable dark apron with the giant pocket
that’s always bulging.

Gina is perhaps one of the last remaining Italian concierges in Milan.
Everyone in the condominium loves her and cares about her even if she’s over sixty
years old, forty of which spent in the concierge.

Andrea sneers, taking a last puff. He lets the cigarette fall down to
the ground and looks at her.

Gina is about to come back inside, but first, as usual, she has a last
look at the sidewalk and, when she sees the cigarette butt, looks up at him.

Andrea greets her with a mocking smile as she raises her broom.
“I’ll smack you on the head with it as soon as I see you!” she shouts
at him with the grunt of a bulldog. And with the sagging cheeks and double chin,
she looks like one as well.

He leaves the window open and goes back into the house laughing.

He takes a shower and in the meanwhile thinks about what he can do in
the afternoon, he already knows he’ll go back to Synthetic Hole tonight. As he
washes his hair he thinks he could go to the Fnac to look at new stuff in
computer and electronics. Or, he could play the Xbox…

The water seems to take away the remaining haziness as well as the most
part of the migraine.

Now he just feels a little muffled.

Perhaps a nice walk is needed, he thinks as he comes out of the shower.
He checks his eyes in the mirror; his pupil size is normal, he only has some
evident dark circles.

As he rubs his short hair with the towel, which dries quickly, the cell
continues to vibrate. He looks down towards the sink, towards the cell, and
sees George’s photo: one of many made on New Year’s seven years ago, where he
has a pointed hat barely held in place because of his black curly hair and chubby
face. Giorgio was as fat as a pig. Now, he’s lost the flab and no longer comforts
himself with food, he’s found something better.

He’s insistent…let’s hear what he wants.

He presses speakerphone.
