Heart of flesh - Sacrifice and revenge (cp3) 2/7
George is dressed in black, with a Diesel sweater and jeans, he walksmoving his neck like a pigeon. Tall and rigid, he looks like a beanpole; thelegacy of having lost over twenty kilos in two years. Sabrina is arm in arm with
Natalia, the classic go to the bathroom together girlfriends. Both with
a little dark mid-thigh length dress, a purse under the arm and scattered
sparkly jewelry. One looks like an apple, the other like a pepper. If it weren’t
for their hair color, Sabrina light brown and Natalia blonde, they could
exchange their identity, seeing as they don’t have one of their own.
They’re mass produced, these ones.
Same attitude, same clothes, same chin with the brown tidemark of their
makeup as if to emphasize how fake the face you’re looking at is. A staging of
perfection that’s demolished faster than the time it took to create it.
Sometimes, he’d like to meet a girl with the courage to go around
without being made up. Who’s not ashamed of a spot on the chin, because it
doesn’t matter, because she has something to say that distracts you from that
insignificant imperfection which makes her all the more real.
For the first time in his life, he would be able to appreciate a woman who
reveals herself for who she is.
Instead, the apple and pepper trudge laboriously upwards
and stare at him.
Time to start the chess game; like the famous one of 1851, played in
London between Anderssen and Kieseritzky, Andrea seeks immortality.
"Hey," he welcomes them with a winning smile. After the usual
kisses on the cheeks for the girls, he shakes George’s hand with a pat on the
back. "So, how are you?” He gazes at Natalia, who moves her head, dangling
her long and thin earrings.
She’s saying: “Not good, but moving on…”
Andrea raises his eyebrows pretending not to know anything, but makes it
clear, however, that he’s noticed her sad demeanor. He goes behind them and
delicately brushes against their shoulders; they are both very soft and with
the draught, he’s inundated by the intense perfume they must have lashed on
before they left home.
"Come on, don’t worry, we’re going to see the film now so we can
relax and then we’ll have a nice pizza." He’s still looking at Natalia who
bats her long eyelashes and nods.
Sabrina instead stares at him bemused, but Andrea indicates the mall
entrance with a nod.
"You look well," Sabrina says as she walks with him, with that
mouth in a perpetual grimace of disapproval as the air itself disgusts her.
"The trip to Madrid hasn’t worn you out. After all, it was George who did
all the driving. Poor thing was exhausted."
Andrea is accustomed to her comments and puts up with it. However, when she
blurts out certain remarks putting him down and trying to catch George out in
the act, it’s unbearable.
"Yeah," he nods and as soon as she turns her head, Andrea gives
his friend a sideways look while George opens his eyes wide to let him know he
had forgotten to warn him.
In fact, he’s not up on this new little lie. And what would they
have been doing in Madrid exactly? Hoping that Sabrina doesn’t ask any more
questions, they go into the Bicocca mall.
He doesn’t get how George manages to have a relationship in this way.
Better off alone than having to lie all the time and cover your tracks like a
secret agent. But it’s his closest friend and he doesn’t judge him, in fact
he’s always backed him up, always hoping, however, they break up, because
Sabrina just doesn’t get it at all.
On the escalators, Andrea slips between the two girlfriends and moves
closer to Natalia to shower her with compliments on her accessories, dress and
other crap that girls like her always love to hear.
He asks her if she wants a Coke or some candy, but she shakes her head.
God forbid, she’ll ruin her figure!
"Let’s do this." He smiles slightly. "I’ll buy them
anyway, so if you change your mind, you won’t be left wishing you had them."
He brushes over her chin slightly with the excuse she has a hair.
She half closes her lips, and Andrea understands he’s managed to arouse
some emotion.
They go into the theater and go to their designated seats. And this
triggers another strategy: he has to ensure that girls are close enough so they
can chat amongst themselves, but still be near Natalia.
He already sees George on the other hand who’s ready to sit next to him.
That’s no good!
If he did that, he’d have to lose a charm point in Natalia’s eyes
and he’d have to go into their designated row first, so he immediately takes her
hand with the excuse he thinks she could stumble bumping into the seats. Sabrina
follows, then George who stares at him nervously. Knowing George, he probably
hoped to be able to talk to him under his breath, irritating his prey as
well as his girlfriend.
Everything works perfectly, he rests his medium-sized Coke in the drinks
holder between them and puts in two straws. “If you want some, it’s here.”
She nods. “Thank you.”
Two quick quips before the movie starts and then silence to let her know
he respects her choice and follows with interest too. He takes a mouth-shaped
candy from the bag and puts it over her lips. “Want one?” he says
jokingly, raising his eyebrows.
She smiles and shakes her head.
He eats it. “Too bad, it’s good,” he whispers, looking at her
sideways before sinking into his comfortable seat. “Oh, yeah!” he
says suddenly raising his pelvis, directing it towards her. He slides his hand
into his pocket and takes hold of his cell, but he pretends it’s stuck in the
pocket so she can let her look a few seconds more. “I have to turn it off,”
he alerts without moving his face around while he turns off the smartphone. He
puts it away with a different move though, with his head down. As soon as he
puts it back into his pocket, he raises his face back up slowly and stares
straight into her eyes.
They’re very close now.
"Is yours off?" he whispers to her and moves away slightly to
see if this has worked as well.
She hesitates and swallows. “No, thanks,” she replies,
blinking her eyes and fumbling with trembling hands inside her purse.
Another victory!
The lights dim and he immediately puts on his 3D glasses. It’s time for
one last little laugh with a classic that they always like: he lifts the
glasses’ legs behind his ear.
Immediate reaction by her: a little smile hidden by her hand as she’s
still embarrassed from before.
"Enjoy the film," he says to her before making himself
comfortable in the velvet chair and leaving the armrest between them free,
creating a slight protective barrier that makes her feel more at ease. Many
girls think of a light furtive touch under the cover of darkness, but Andrea must
appear to be like a modern-day Prince Charming just as she says in Facebook.
The film is awful, but she seems to like it. Every now and then she gets
scared and looks at him smiling, a gesture he always returns. Unfortunately,
Natalia doesn’t give him chance to do anything, except when she finally decides
to take a sip of Coke.
Carpe Diem!
He approaches quickly with his glasses held on his head with one hand, grabs
his straw by the tongue only and has a small sip, with his eyes facing
downwards. Then, he raises him suddenly upwards and she is startled.
Natalia sits back upright, breathing impaired, her chest frantically
rising up and down. She calms down after a while.
It worked.
The film ends and, before getting up, he asks if she liked it. She nods.
“Me too. Thanks for the advice,” he lies with an indignant smirk and stands
up, leaving the Coke in the drinks holder.
"Are you not going to take it?" she asks, pointing at it.
"No. I got it just for you,” he replies, arching his
back and moving his hips towards her when he says “just for you”. He
then makes a deep sigh and slips his hands in his pockets.
She looks down again, batting her eyelashes and follows Sabrina who had
in the meanwhile had started to move behind George.
They meet up near the exit and Andrea opens the door for her, and also lets
Sabrina pass through.
George smirks. “I told you it was shit,” he says quietly, as
soon as he’s close to him.
"Ditto," chuckles Andrea.
