#heartofflesh #excerpt from Chapter 11- Soothing Gutting
It’s nine in the evening and Andrea’s getting ready to
go out. His uncle has called and told him about his chat with Barbara. Something
has changed. And her condition is still stable. He advises him to relax and distract
himself with his friends. An evening letting off steam can only do him good.
With renewed hope, Andrea parks near the minimarket
and starts walking uphill along the main street. The shops have closed, but
some bars still have their shutters open and are finishing the evening’s cleaning.
Happy groups fill the restaurants, waiting to sample local delicacies. The road
goes on upwards, but fortunately is immaculately maintained and a pleasurable
walk.
He passes through ‘Piazza dell’Orologio’ where the
tower of the same name proudly displays the town’s symbol: designed by Pietro
and Cosimo Fanzago, the clock is still in use today, and accurately displays
the astral movements of the earth, sun and moon.
Kids sit and enjoy their ice creams on the small wall
opposite and the tables of the restaurant and bar under the arcades are all
full.
Clusone is full of tourists and it’s still only June.
Walking past the arcades, he arrives at the “Cat
and the Fox” and sees his friends.
Luca and Carlotta greet him with the usual enthusiasm,
Vittorio and Alessandra are quiet, close to each other, while Pietro, seeing
Andrea, clings onto Susy. She moves away, though.
“Hi!” she greets him, raising her arm, and
Andrea is already happy.
And he feels like the clock; when he sees her, everything
moves into perfect alignment. When he’s not with her, his hands just turn at
random.
He greets the girls with kisses on the cheeks and they
all go inside to sit on the terrace overlooking the street like a mezzanine.
Large and rectangular, it’s covered by a beautiful ivy
roof. The many flower pots on the window sill create an intimate atmosphere and
passers-by peer inside: their curiosity roused by the scents of polenta with
mushrooms, roast venison, baked potatoes and all the other delights that
stimulate both Andrea’s appetite and mood.
They chat happily, although he notices tension between
Pietro and Susy; his arm often tries to hold her shoulders, but she avoids him
and gives him an annoyed look as if angry.
Andrea’s a little pleased. If there is tension between
them, there is hope for him. On the other hand, he doesn’t like seeing Susy so tense.
He notices a large spot between her eyebrows. This is the second and, if like
the first, is due to stress, meaning it has got worse. He would really like to
know the reason.
Dinner ends and everyone decides to go on to another
bar. Not Andrea, though.
He has done some calculations with his uncle on how
much he can spend and it’s better if he goes home now. Not wanting to say that
it’s because of money problems, he simply says that he’s tired; these are still
difficult days, given that Barbara is not yet out of danger.
They say goodbye and the group heads down towards the
main street. Andrea decides to take a walk to burn off the casoncelli;
an excellent pasta dish with meat, grain and herb stuffing and a sauce of bacon,
butter and sage. It was fabulous, but too big.
He feels like he has a huge donut around his belly.
Perhaps going to the Basilica would be a good idea.
It’s high up, with many steep steps to help him digest.
He wanders the small streets, dark now, but still safe.
The narrow side streets of Clusone take on a special
charm at night. It’s like walking around in the age of the ancient Romans. The
town takes its name from Clausus, an enclosed place in the mountains.
In reality, it dates back even further; the Orobii were here as early as 1300
BC. Andrea really can’t imagine how things would have looked back then.
The ‘Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and San Giovanni
Battista’ is so white that it stands out in the dark, without needing any
lights. Risen from the ruins of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to the
goddess Diana, it dates from the second half of the 1600s, but was consecrated
only in 1700.
It can’t be seen from afar, but he catches some
glimpses between the houses, before reaching its wide, circular flight of steps.
He looks at the parvis in front of the church; raised and enclosed by a
balustrade with high marble statues. He takes hold of the banister and
continues the climb.
On reaching the top, he admires the magnificent
portico. Covered by a cross vault, it has five central aisles and two
avant-corps at the extremities. The facade is of small steps that gradually
raise it without any particular decoration.
