#heartofflesh excerpt Chapter 21- Venus at her Mirror
“And do you like the collar?” she asks,
pointing to her neck. A thin, black ribbon is wrapped around it and is
highlighted even more by her tied-up hair.
He nods his head; better not to tell her that just
seeing it has made his heart jump into his throat.
Susanna smiles happily. She and Alessandra look at
themselves again in a large mirror leant up against the wall.
“I’ll help you,” says Andrea, taking the
mirror, straightening it and lifting it up slightly. “Is that
better?”
They both nod and twirl around and around to check
that everything is in place. Andrea feels like he’s in Velàzquez’s “Venus
and Cupid” painting; she exudes charm tonight, as if a goddess, and she
doesn’t even realize it. Perhaps, because beauty is not only a question of
sight and a simple mirror certainly can’t reflect all that Andrea is feeling.
Susanna has released the Eros from inside her little
head full of fantasies. Her whole body speaks and captivates with every little
gesture.
Andrea feels increasingly annoyed that she will soon
stroll around the crowd selling bingo tickets and then remain at the awards
table to take the prizes to the winners. It’s really bothering him. He can
imagine the various jokes and appreciation that she will receive. Jealousy
begins to rear its head.
He would like to hide her in a place where only he can
admire her.
He has never been jealous and now knows that it’s not
pleasant. Actually, it’s horrible. However, he strives not to ruin her evening,
because all three of them have worked hard and it’s for charity. The more
tickets they sell, the more prizes they will give out, and the more Susanna,
Alessandra and Carlotta will feel satisfied.
And Andrea just wants to see her happy.
