And you know how I feel about adorable geekboys...

...in that I think they're, you know, adorable. Last year I really enjoyed Andrew McClelland and Lawrence Leung in Time Ninjas. (So did Gary and Lissa, as it happens) This year,  Andrew McClelland is solo again with his Somewhat Accurate History of the Fall of the Roman Empire.  It's not belly laugh a minute, but it's thoroughly enjoyable. McClelland has really grown as a performer over the years and is completely at home on the stage. He's full of energy and enthusiasm, as well as more than ...

I don't know if it's comedy, but...

The Comedy festival continues apace, with several excellent shows and some not so excellent. I really enjoyed Hannah Gadsby and Sarah Millican, and enjoyed most of Cardinal Burns.

But the show that is sticking with me today is Phil Nichol's "A Deadpan Poet Sings Quiet Songs Quietly". Nichol actually plays a character named Bobby Spade, who may occasionally be deadpan but is almost never quiet. I'm not sure I've ever seen a show that is more deliberately offensive, and I have never been in a...

Comedy Festival 2010: Kransky Sisters and Jamie Kilstein

The festival started for us last night. We saw the Kranksy Sisters. I've only ever seen the occasional song - the whole show is a treat! The conservative, near-Edwardian spinster schtick is pretty funny, and the way that translates into hilarious covers of songs like Staying Alive, Ca Plane Pour Moi and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap is priceless. Interestingly, doing these songs in a more close-harmony, melodic way is also a great way to get a new take on the music.

New York comic Jamie Kilstein...

Curling. A danger sport.

I went to the Icehouse skating rink in Docklands yesterday as part of a work thing. Besides long talks about how we're going to change the world, or at least the department, we were also separated into groups and sent onto the ice to try out curling. That Canadian sport with the giant polished stone and some brooms. I first heard of it about 15 years ago when Paul Gross of Due South did a curling movie, or something like that.

I am not an athelete, as those who know me will attest. But I...

A funny thing happened on the way to the birthday party

Last night I went to a birthday party at the Butterfly Club in South Melbourne. It was a Spies and Villains themed fancy dress party to celebrate my friend Craig's 50th, and a surprise party to boot, so he didn't know what was happening until he showed up. There were cocktails and a few games, great food, top notch venue and staff, and a great time was had by all. The staff member who dressed like the Joker told me how he'd driven in from home in his Joker makeup, causing more than one double...

Dedicated to the ones I love

A whole lot of people I know on LJ and elsewhere in my life are not having a good time right now. There are all sorts of reasons - chronic or short term medical problems, relationship troubles, intense stress, work stuff, personal stuff, education and employment stuff, other stuff.

I feel kind of useless about most of it, because I'm far away, or I just don't know what to do. :/ Right now the only thing I can think of is to post this message, to let you know that individually and collectively,...

More ads re Ebay...

Tim and I are selling our old DVDs of Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes, cos we just bought a replacement entire boxed set from the UK. We're also selling our LImited Edition TARDIS box set of Eccleston's Season 1, because it took up too much space in our bookshelf so we've replaced that too. That one we are only allowing pick up for, as we don't think it can be posted safely.

So if you're interested, go and have a look!

Someone in my family now owns a bar!!

My brother Stephen called me yesterday to say that his wife Alex now owns Cartel coffee bar on Caxton Street in Brisbane. They're both excited and terrified by the idea! I'm thrilled for them. Obviously they need to update their website now too! :) Has anyone been there? If you drop in on St Patrick's day and see a beautiful dark-haired woman named Alex, tell her hi from me!

GaryView: The Nymphos of Rocky Flats by Mario Acevedo

Lissa: So what's this book you want me to read.
Gary: Here. (shoves book at her)
Lissa: "The Nymphos of Rocky Flats". (pause) Is this why you wouldn't tell me what it was called over the phone?
Gary: (mumble)
Lissa: And you reckon it's good?
Gary: I said it was different.
Lissa: (reads back cover) An ex-soldier now-vampire private eye; Eastern European vampire hunters and an outbreak of nymphomania. Yup. Different.
Gary: It's not like all those books about girls falling in love with vampires ...
