Kat Spears grew up moving every few years and is still looking for her hometown. Kat writes realistic, edgy, honest, sometimes heartbreaking, often funny books about and for young people. Being a teenager sucked for Kat, and she’s still trying to write her way out of it. She spends her free time rearing caterpillars, vacuuming up dog hair, and writing letters the old-fashioned way. Her favorite job, ever, is being the mother of three perfect and hilarious humans.

The third book is called THE BOY WHO KILLED GRANT PARKER about a boy who moves to a new town and is bullied and mistreated. It's a contemporary retelling of the old western, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE, set in a high school. It's a dark comedy that pokes fun at the social hierarchy of high schools as well as our often misguided hero worship of people for the wrong traits. The story line is fairly simple but the main character goes through a complicated development. It's really hard to write!(less)

I almost always write from the teenage male perspective because I don't feel as if my voice sounds authentic when I write from a female's perspective. I have no idea why that is. It comes very naturally for me to write from a teenage male perspective. I had a number of close guy friends when I was in middle and high school, most of whom I still keep in touch with today. Somehow I am just able to channel their thoughts and personalities when I write. I have some manuscripts told from a female POV but I'm not sure I would ever try to publish one of them. Thanks for your question.(less)

Breakaway by Kat Spears
I think the antagonist is Jason's situation in life and, to some extent, his reaction to his world and the people in it are what hold him back. Jason has a strong sense of right and wrong, but things seem to always work against him. He's constantly c See Full Answer

The best recommendation I can give for this book is that my own young readers loved it. My son read it when he was 12 and finished it in one sitting. My daughter (now also 12) read it twice despite there being many books in our house to choose from. ...more
