As a freshman at the University of Colorado, N.K. Traver decided to pursue Information Technology because classmates said "no one could make a living" with an English degree. It wasn’t too many years later Traver realized it didn’t matter what the job paid—nothing would ever be as fulfilling as writing. Programmer by day, writer by night, it was only a matter of time before the two overlapped.

Traver's debut, DUPLICITY, a cyberthriller pitched as BREAKING BAD meets THE MATRIX for teens, is now available.

Read, read, read. And write. A lot.

There are books on technique and craft (like Stephen King's brilliant ON WRITING, or Donald Maass' THE BREAKOUT NOVELIST), but I truly believe I learned the most from reading my favorite authors. For voice, I love Patrick Ness' CHAOS WALKING series. For imagery and gorgeous prose, Laini Taylor's DAUGHTER OF SMOKE AND BONE. For characters and setting, Maggie Stiefvater's THE SCORPIO RACES. Each person's favorites will be different, of course, but I think writing is like "you are what you eat" - you write like you read. Whatever you most value in books will come through in your writing, and the more you read, the more unique and natural your style will become.(less)
