BUSINESS AS USUAL
The ball will drop
And it will be lit
There will be cheers
There will be suicides
The ball will drop
And it will twinkle
Bringing new hopes
And plenty of fears
The ball will drop
And it will dance
Confetti will fly
Happy new year
Full of fight
Full of giving up
Moving forward
Pushing
Shoving
Climbing
Falling back
Standing still
Crying
Laughing
Screaming
The ball will fall
And it will blink
Before leaving us
To carry on

WEATHERED
She fought the fight gone
Energy lost to the fading
Slow stepping beats
Like a labored dragging
Only time remains
Erratic in its spinning
And rigidity laces
Around bones bracing
Cover her in sand
And set a fire blazing
Death in a kiln
A tribute worth seeking

BREATHING ASHES
Anarchy
Steps heavy with
Steel toed boots
Torches replace
Keystrokes
Wooden stakes
Carved into words
Skewering insides
Turning logic
Into a constant
Trickling streams
Of overdosed panic
Invisible blood
Flows thick
Drawing poison
From weak souls
Until the puss
Runs sticky
And thoughts sit
Restless
In puddles
Of old and dried
Scabby wounds
Until remorse
Draws clarity
From our bruised
Purple and blue
Beaten heart
And only then
Will logic settle
Into a steady rhythm
And only then
Will we be able
To turn ashes
Into breath

BIG ETHEL’S VACATION
It has been awhile since I have written a duet with anyone. Thank you Byron Hamel for making this one amazing.
She smiles down
Her warmth unseen
But undeniable
Her wings
Gust softly
Turn the world
She is the artist
Sculptor
Raising mountains
Painter
Coloring the sea
Rejoicing
She descends
To further gift
This beautiful creation
Closer she comes
Closer
Through the barriers
That slow and freeze
Joy fading from her skin
Impossibly
Her heart stops
She is somewhere
Dark
In peril
In a mire of golems
Screaming clay and mud
Chained by false freedoms
She redoubles
Cloaks herself in love
Compassion
Expectations shatter
There is war
Surrounding her
In empty suffering
Meaningless decay
Destruction
Disappointment
Heartache
Sorrow
Pain cracks through
Her skin
It bulges
Bursting as she watches
As we slay our brothers
Prostitute our children
Kill for entertainment
Corrupt everything
Twist truth
Abuse our reasoning
Our gifts dashed
She erupts
Her molten tears
Spilling her hopes into the sea
And she is gone
And she is nothing
And we didn’t even know she came

SMALL SKELETONS
We sat silent
And content
With eyes
Still full of sleep
Waiting for the bus
The sky was still dark
Like it usually is
Because school
Starts way too early
And we listened
As the wind
Kicked up the leaves
Newly crisp and dead
From Fall’s bully breath
They sounded
Like skeletons
Dancing
On concrete
Sidewalks
And then the bus came
And all the skeletons
Just flew away

THEN YOU WILL…
Alarm goes off and you get your eyes unglued
It’s time to get your little monsters out of bed
You get them showered, fed, dressed, packed
You walk the dog in fuzzy slippers to the bus
Where you send the kids off with a loving fuss
Get back home where you feed the puppy dog
Take a shower that lasts probably way too long
Where you shave your legs, your pits, and…
You try on two dozen outfits that no longer fit
Depressed you chide yourself for wanting to get lit
But you don’t… so you finally find a pair of pants
And shirt that won’t gap that mostly covers your tits
You blow dry hair noticing more shimmers of grey
Applying makeup so heavy nobody can see your face
Cover your wrinkles trying hard not to leave a trace
Pluck the whiskers that like to hide on your chin
And since you have a few extra minutes to yourself
You sit and you cry because of how fast time flew
Then you grab a granola bar as you fly out the door
Where you will go to work until an hour past four
You will talk to your husband in an email or two
Establish who will chauffeur the kids to and fro
And who will get groceries for the dinner planned
Then when dinner is through and tum tums are full
When homework is done you will all shoot the bull
And then when the clock reads 9:00 you will
Hear the kids whine along with every chime
You will tuck them in, wish them sweet dreams
Then you will ask your husband how was his day
And if you’re lucky he will have something to say
You will say goodnight because he needs his sleep
And you will let the dog out and make some tea
You slip out of your clothes and wash your face
And since you have a few extra minutes to yourself
I sit and cry noticing how often I am alone by myself

MASCULINE FEMINIST
Step through whiskers
Shhhh ever so slowly
Quietly now girls
With painted pink toes
Through the dark night
We sneak
Tippy toe steps
One and one and one
Move gently my sweet
So as not to disturb
The baritone hatred
That sleeps in our path
Under blankets of hate
Swiftly leap over the holes
Filled with condemnation
And misogynist propaganda
Take the reaching hands
Of our masculine allies
The bravest of brothers
Waiting over trenches
Filled with crimson blood
Fighting the onslaught
Of barbed steel tongues
That pierces each of us
Where our bravest
Colleagues unite as one
Where solidarity stands
And where freedom sings
This is where the angels
And the men we love
Guard the walls
To protect the rights
Of the feminine strong

THIS FINAL HOUR

I hide in the corner
Under cobwebs
As demons swarm
The summer night
I watch them
As they sing off key
A sinister lullaby
And steal fire
From candlelight
And like magic
Other universes
Appear in misty
Shadows dancing
On the lawn
A final party
In this final hour
Has finally begun

ABANDONED ROOM
Coffins line eroded walls
Like blackened bloody bricks
And webs that spiders spun
Have long ago lost their stick
She is aware she is breathing
She is scared he is leaving
Questions asked, no response
As snowflakes intend to bury
Feelings once warm, ignored
Until covered in their icy flurry
She is aware she is breathing
She is scared he is leaving
Screams full of heartbreak
Are long forgotten songs
Echoing ghostly whispers
A memorial to their wrongs
She is aware she is breathing
She is scared he is leaving
Running so long without hope
Toward an old and broken light
He took the sun away from her
And took the moon out of spite
She is aware she is breathing
She is scared he is leaving
She boards up the windows
And prepares to leave
The old abandoned room
Where for so long she did grieve
Why am I still breathing
I know he’s not returning

LIQUID PRISMS
Liquid prisms
Caught the light
Falling desperately
Sounding like
Shattering glass
Shards of hope
Splintering on
Checkered floors
Black and white
Copyrights
Stepping on
Red carpets
Unfolding
Flawed
Unraveling
Lazily across
Pressure points
Where mean girls
Wait to draw blood
And where dreams
Drown in the prisms
Of so many tears
