Thanks Lozzi! I'm very glad you were touched by Shirelle's story, and you're sure right, she was gorgeous!

I have lots of dogs in my life, of course - those living with friends and family - but I haven't had one of my own since Shirelle. Which was never my intention! I've just been outrageously busy for the last few years, between building my professional practice, and working to get this book ready.

But my promise to myself is that, when the initial publicity push for the book is done, I will get a puppy. And just as when I found Shirelle, I'll go into the search with no intent for any particular sort. But just with hopes that I can find as miraculous a connection as I did last time.

He argues that writer's block is not a negative at all, but simply a moment when your awareness of quality rises above your abilities. So for example, if you only like 3-chord folk music, you can write lots of songs easily; but if you suddenly start appreciating Beethoven, you won't like the songs you're able to write anymore. The writer's block is just saying you need to up your game.

Ever since I read this (about ten years ago) I've never suffered writer's block again. When I hit a place where I don't know what to say, I just relax and give myself time to think of it. And sure enough, often, the result is simply something outside my earlier envelope - and I'm thrilled.(less)

I don’t think anyone who glanced at the newspaper comics on New Year’s Eve, 1995, will ever forget that day’s Calvin and Hobbes. The last strip that amazing strip would ever post. The boy and the tiger trek through deep fresh snow, thrilled at the new, open world greeting them: “A day full of possibilities!” Then sailing on their sled into a giant frame of whiteness, exclaiming, “Let’s go explorin Read more of this blog post »
