E.K. Johnston had several jobs and one vocation before she became a published writer. If she’s learned anything, it’s that things turn out weird sometimes, and there’s not a lot you can do about it. Well, that and how to muscle through awkward fanfic because it’s about a pairing she likes.

You can follow Kate on Twitter (@ek_johnston) to learn more about Alderaanian political theory than you really need to know, or on Tumblr (ekjohnston) if you're just here for pretty pictures.

YOU GUYS.

What Hartman did here is something I have been wanting the fantasy genre to do FOR A WHILE NOW in that Tess is, in response to her direct situation, "unlikeable" and "unsympathetic" and therefore AMAZING. She's ungraceful, uncooperative, and

Here's a thing that basically everyone knows about me: I am not in this for anti-heroes.

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH.

Dao wrote such an incredibly complicated girl who is fully aware of what she's doing, and that absolutely sold it to me. I loved reading

I really enjoyed this book. It was well-built and the pacing was on point. All of the characters made believable decisions. Blake had a TONNE of set-up to do, and she executed it all in an interesting way. I loved the different between Part 1 and Par ...more

Labyrinth Lost is straight up one of the best books about witches/magic/family/identity I have ever read. Córdova wanted "Charmed, with Latinx brujas", and, man, did she nail it. The characters were awesome, the sister-ing was awesome, the family-ing ...more

Basically, it's the parts of Buffy, Pacific Rim, and Avatar: The Last Airbender that I loved the most, with twists and turns of its own, and some really excellent world building.

It's messy and complicated and full of girls and and you should buy it.

Several friends on Twitter REALLY liked it. Like "favourite book of the year" liked it. And I do enjoy the Regency, so I decided to give it a shot.

“If you listen long enough to the whispers, you will hear the truth. Until then, I will tell you this: the world is made safe by a woman. She bound the monster up and cast him out, and the man who was left was saved.”
E.K. Johnston, A Thousand Nights

“I do fear him,” I said, which was close to the truth. “I fear him as I fear the desert sun and poisonous snakes. They are all part of the life I live. But the sun gives light, and snakes will feed a caravan if they are caught and cooked.”
E.K. Johnston, A Thousand Nights

“My sister is no fool and she is not tender-hearted,” I said. “My sister fights for her home, and takes what risks she must. That is why I put myself before her today—why I would not let you have her. My sister burns, and she does not burn for you.”
E.K. Johnston, A Thousand Nights
