Location, location, location!

When I can't write and there's a huge blockade in front of my creative brain, I get out. I go somewhere for the afternoon or evening or for a day trip! My favorites over the years include airports, train rides, dark cafes, and anywhere with a fireplace. I also love going to the nearest body of water. It's calming, and lends itself calmly to pondering, and then... writing.

Things I avoid when I have writer's block: tv (sucks me in or puts me in a sad, hopeless state), Harry Potter (I'll never stop), and snacks that make your fingers sticky (constantly getting up to wash your hands is a great way to not write anything).(less)

Reading, too, is an amazing way to spark your brain. Anytime I go anywhere--to a new city or country, to the grocery store, to the Beer Shoppe, I take a notebook, and I often write down observations, fragments of conversation, anything that reminds me of something that I'm writing about or might like to write about someday. Ideas are everywhere, and as a writer, I love to find them. It might be the best part about being a writer. Observing life and energy and movement is fun.(less)

Fiction: Lemon Politico

"Was the fruit slinger a lunatic?  Or a friend, neighbor, or relative?  Was I so blinded by my own beliefs that I could no longer entertain opposing viewpoints?  The phrase confirmation bias echoed in my head."
