An in-person Haibun Workshop at the Asiatic Society of Mumbai’s festival / 27 Jan 2023.
The Mumbai Research Centre of the Asiatic Society of Mumbai is pleased to present Jashn e Dastaan e Mumbai 2023. The theme this year is “On The Streets” celebrating the city’s vivid street life.
Haibun is a form of self-reflective prose-poetry invented by the 17th century Japanese monk-poet Matsuo Bashō. Since the late 19th century, it has been growing in popularity in the English-speaking world. In this workshop, poetess and writer Rochelle Potkar will walk you through the nuances of this form, as well getting you to write your own first haibun.
Rochelle Potkar’s first book, “The Arithmetic of Breasts and Other Stories” was shortlisted for The Digital Book of the Year Award 2014 by Publishing Next. Four Degrees of Separation (Paperwall, 2016) is her first book of poetry. She has represented India at the University of Iowa’s International Writing Program and was a writer-in-residence at the UNESCO city of literature – Iowa’s International Writing Program (IWP), Fall Residency 2015. She was a Charles Wallace Writer’s fellow at the University of Stirling, Scotland, 2017. She is co-founder of the Arcs-of-a-Circle artists’ residency program, a project by US Consulate, Mumbai.
