November 2013

G.R. Reader was born on a Friday afternoon, when her parents thought nobody would notice.

Life at home in her early days was turbulent, but she was mostly ignored and her cries fell on deaf ears.

As she grew up, she engaged in a number of forms of civil disobedience, with varying degrees of (i.e. no) success.

G.R.'s books include Off-Topic: The Story of an Internet Revolt and the forthcoming Yes, I Farted, already shortlisted for the American Natural Gas Alliance Literary Prize.

Indian Cookery by Madhur Jaffrey

I figured that if Luboš Motl hated the book this much, it had to be worth reading. It's usually a sound principle, and it didn't let me down this time either.

“At your next book club meeting, picture me sitting quietly in the corner, taking notes on your preferences. Imagine the next day you get an email from me trying to sell you a new grill — or a book — or accessories for your Glock. That's the Amazon/Goodreads deal. It's appalling. But everywhere in the press, you'll read about the genius of Amazon."

G.R. Reader, Off-Topic: The Story of an Internet Revolt

“By deciding what is, and is not, allowed to be discussed in a review, by removing discussion of social context, and saying that only the words on the page count, Goodreads is ignoring fifty years of development of literary criticism, and is engaging in censorship.”
G.R. Reader, Off-Topic: The Story of an Internet Revolt

“The Internet is transient. Information can be removed with a couple of mouse-clicks; it is an Orwellian dream. We have been advised, by people who claim to know about these things, that there is no point in protesting against a social network. Whoever owns the network will run it as they see fit, normally to maximize their profit margin. Members who dispute the rules will simply be thrown out. The Terms of Use are written so as not to allow them any recourse.”

G.R. Reader, Off-Topic: The Story of an Internet Revolt

“I agree that it's a shame some books have to suffer ratings that clearly are invalid. However I can't think of a way to prevent it, and I didn't see any ideas in the thread either (I did skim though).

I hope you'll appreciate that if we just start deleting ratings whenever we feel like it, that we've gone down a censorship road that doesn't take us to a good place.”
Otis Y. Chandler

“To be clear, Goodreads staff have not been deleting any posts. A value we've always had here is that we don't censor content (unless it's against our policies - eg porn, etc). [April 1, 2013]”

G.R. Reader I would like to propose John Winterson Richards for this month's Well-Behaved Author Award. His recent conversation with me is a very model of how to respond to a negative review, and almost made me wonder if I had misjudged his book.

Traveller Ha ha! I wuz already a fan, G.R.

Can't wait for your next book. WHHEEE!! :D

s.penkevich Thank you for the friend request! And for being awesome.
