Erica Kiefer’s debut novel Lingering Echoes was published by Clean Teen Publishing in November 2013. She continued the series with Rumors (A Lingering Echoes Prequel) and her newest release Vanishing Act. All of her books can be read as stand-alone contemporary YA fiction, touched with romance, emotional drama and suspense. With a degree in Recreation Therapy from Brigham Young University, Erica’s experiences working with at-risk youth have influenced the realistic and relatable nature of her writing. Her first inspirational non-fiction entitled Borrowed Angel (published in April 2014 with Currawong Press) describes the loss of her infant son and her journey towards healing.

Married since 2005, Erica resides in Las Vegas, Nevada with her fou

Great question! I wrote Lingering Echoes first and had not yet experienced any death on a deeply personal level. However, my background in therapy and working with at-risk youth in residential treatment provided me a lot of experience working with kids struggling with challenging life circumstances. I loved helping them work to understand their emotions and help them create positive experiences.

Unfortunately, my own personal loss happened while trying to publish Lingering Echoes. My first-born son died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. That experience and being pulled into a world of grief and healing allowed me to add some personal touches to Rumors when I wrote it four years later.

I've since published a book called Vanishing Act that is not a sequel per se to Lingering Echoes, but it has some of the same characters from Lingering Echoes (like Aaron Jackson!) and dives into similarly troubling circumstances. If you're up for another emotional read, check it out on my website: www.ericakieferbooks.com I'd love to hear from you again and see what you thought of LE. Contact me on FB. I'm on there all the time! www.facebook.com/ericakieferauthor

The Aftermath of Storms

I feel it. Creeping up on me with stealth I can no longer fight–those tears I’ve managed to push aside with each thought of my little one, now eight years gone. I find myself lingering in front of the photography projects I’ve challenged myself to complete, sprinkling his sweet baby face throughout my house in ways I’ve resisted because they lacked perfection and the ability to represent all he is

“Change was a scary concept. Whether you were ready for it or not, sometimes it crept up on you, ambushing without warning, and no matter if you wanted it or not, you had to figure out how to accept it and adapt to its insistent nature.”
Erica Kiefer, Lingering Echoes

“I looked at him in mock annoyance. “So you decided to scare me and make me fall out of that tree?” I laughed in remembrance. “Your tactics could have been a little more subtle.” “True. And like I said, I didn’t mean to scare you. I was just...observing from the bushes—” I laughed out loud at his choice of words. “Oh, is that what all the stalkers are calling it these days?” He ignored my comments, placing a hand over my mouth. “Observing,” he continued, “and working up the nerve to talk to you. I had no idea I would scare you so much. But I’m kind of glad I did.” I made a face. “What? Why?” “Well, otherwise, I may not have discovered you were so feisty,” Damien said impishly. I grabbed a pillow and slammed it into his face.”

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”
Richard Lingard, A Letter of Advice to a Young Gentleman Leaving the University Concerning His Behaviour and Conversation in the World

“Only people who are capable of loving strongly can also suffer great sorrow, but this same necessity of loving serves to counteract their grief and heals them.”
Leo Tolstoy

“No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear.”
C.S. Lewis, A Grief Observed

“The worst type of crying wasn't the kind everyone could see--the wailing on street corners, the tearing at clothes. No, the worst kind happened when your soul wept and no matter what you did, there was no way to comfort it. A section withered and became a scar on the part of your soul that survived. For people like me and Echo, our souls contained more scar tissue than life.”
Katie McGarry, Pushing the Limits

“You will lose someone you can’t live without, and your heart will be badly broken, and the bad news is that you never completely get over the loss of your beloved. But this is also the good news. They live forever in your broken heart that doesn’t seal back up. And you come through. It’s like having a broken leg that never heals perfectly—that still hurts when the weather gets cold, but you learn to dance with the limp.”
Anne Lamott
