Hello, how's things?

Plenty going on here. Sun shining!

Book one of a new fantasy series based on my now ancient first book is well underway. Magic system is elemental - earth, air, fire and water.

The cover for book one is almost sorted too. Will do a cover reveal in June!

I've no idea where this idea will go but I'm enjoying writing it and investigating different points of view. The story is based in London and I'm not even sure yet whether it is a childrens/YA story or an adult one??? Time will tell!
I'm also working on a futuristic dystopian fantasy in a world where most of the people can't hear. This one has been put aside for a wee bit while I try to work out where it is going!(less)

However, when I trace back my thoughts I can see that I'm being influenced by what I'm reading, movies I've watched, newspaper articles and my own life. I often start with just a name or two and work from there. Sometimes I force myself to be inspired to write, because if you just sit around waiting to be inspired nothing gets done!(less)

Rita Angus & Hiria Anderson Mita

Took a trip to the Tauranga Art Gallery this past weekend and was rewarded with some unexpected delights.

Aside from the massive, colourful lobby artwork by Dreamgirls Art Collective: Pop-pocalypse – that I really should have paid more attention to since I see it’s now now at it’s end – there were three great artists we really enjoyed.

Twenty-five paintings by Rita Angus

Haven’t always been a fan but

A Mer-Tale by J.M. Goldie
"I should begin this review by saying that as Managing Director of IFWG Publishing Australia, I have published Jan M. Goldie (Brave's Journey - young teen fantasy), but I was not compelled in any way to review this book. I was simply handed it for my " Read more of this review »

Willa Cather
“Whatever we had missed, we possessed together the precious, the incommunicable past.”
Willa Cather, My Ántonia

Willa Cather
“I was something that lay under the sun and felt it, like the pumpkins, and I did not want to be anything more. I was entirely happy. Perhaps we feel like that when we die and become a part of something entire, whether it is sun and air, or goodness and knowledge. At any rate, that is happiness; to be dissolved into something complete and great. When it comes to one, it comes as naturally as sleep.”
Willa Cather, My Ántonia

Carrie Anne Noble
“Infatuation is easy to cure, if that is his problem. A little dandelion root, a sprig of hare-foot plant, a shaving of nutmeg, and a drop of moonrose nectar mixed into a cup of chamomile. True love is another story, I’m afraid. There is no cure for true love.”
Carrie Anne Noble, The Mermaid's Sister

David Walliams
“In Britain, a cup of tea is the answer to every problem.
Fallen off your bicycle? Nice cup of tea.
Your house has been destroyed by a meteorite? Nice cup of tea and a biscuit.
Your entire family has been eaten by a Tyrannosaurus Rex that has travelled through a space/time portal? Nice cup of tea and a piece of cake. Possibly a savoury option would be welcome here too, for example a Scotch egg or a sausage roll.”
David Walliams, Mr Stink

George R.R. Martin
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one.”
George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons
