The National Enquirer (also commonly known as the Enquirer ) is an American supermarket tabloid, founded by William Griffin as the Sunday afternoon broadsheet newspaper The New York Evening Enquirer, and now published by American Media Inc. (AMI). The name and direction of the paper were change in 1953 by owner Generoso Pope Jr., following which circulation soared. Since then, the paper has been repeatedly criticized for its salacious coverage and dubious ethics, and sued, sometimes successfully, over allegations of libel, defamation, and false content.
