Thanks so much for reading, Sherri.
I'm about 15k words into my next novel, To Test The Meaning of Certain Dreams. It's set in 1969 USSR and so far owes a lot to one of my favorite books, GILEAD. I'm sure by the time I finish it--hoping for <<10 years this time--it will be a rock opera or something unrecognizable to me now. But I'm really excited about the dreams being tested in the end. In the Distance by Hernan Diaz
"This is one of the best books of the year. It's like Cormac McCarthy, except good. Beautiful and suspenseful and alive, with some of the best landscape writing ever ("Nothing interrupted the mineral silence of the desert. In its complete stillness..." Read more of this review »

This is a brutal book. It gets all the way inside death and nothingness, so close that even the dream of immortality seems screamingly oppressive.

I wrote about it at the Brooklyn Rail: http://www.brooklynrail.org/2016/05/b...

Zero K by Don DeLillo
"Don DeLillo is thinking about death.

Admittedly, that’s not breaking news. DeLillo has been thinking about death — his, ours, America’s — over the whole span of his extraordinary career. But now, at 79, the author of such modern classics as “White..." Read more of this review »

“—As you get older, you lose the wonder of youth. And when you find even a flicker of that old light, you’re very nearly brought to tears—not by the beauty of what you see, it’s more selfish than that, but by the fact that you can still see beauty. You aren’t this rheumy broken thing. You have the capacity for wonder and beauty and light and are not yet dead.”
Will Chancellor, A Brave Man Seven Storeys Tall

“It was a nasty paradox: he had developed an aesthetic that drew him to significant art, but that same sensibility made him realize he could never do anything remotely significant.”
Will Chancellor, A Brave Man Seven Storeys Tall

“life, a blur of birth and death—birth and death being the only two moments of life in which we don’t exist.”

“But man, proud man,
Dress'd in a little brief authority,
Most ignorant of what he's most assur'd—
His glassy essence—like an angry ape
Plays such fantastic tricks before high heaven
As makes the angels weep; who, with our spleens,
Would all themselves laugh mortal.”
William Shakespeare, Measure for Measure

“Vitally, the human race is dying. It is like a great uprooted tree, with its roots in the air. We must plant ourselves again in the universe.”
D.H. Lawrence, Lady Chatterley's Lover
