I'm a crime writer and write the Alex Cupidi series set in Dungeness, Kent and the Breen & Tozer series set in London in 1968-9. I also write under the name G.W. Shaw.

My ninth novel is The Trawlerman , the fourth in the Alex Cupidi series - if you don't count The Birdwatcher .

My non-fiction books include Westsiders , an account of several young would-be rappers struggling to establish themselves against a backdrop of poverty and violence in South Central Los Angeles, Superhero For Hire , a compilation and of the Small Ads columns I wrote for the Observer Magazine, and Spying In Guru Land , in which I joined several British religious cults to write about them.

A Song From Dead Lips was the first in a trilogy of books set i

2023 Updates - and the new Cupidi book

This July I have a new novel coming out - writing as G.W. Shaw. The Conspirators features a hapless translator who, down on his luck and with a girlfriend who's jilting him for his lack of ambition, takes a job working abroad, only to find he's part of an international fraud ring, and in the middle of a violent turf war between two crime syndicates.

I'm currently writing Cupidi Book 5, The Wild Swi Read more of this blog post »

The Birdwatcher by William Shaw
"There were two reasons why William South did not want to be on the murder team. The first was that it was October. The migrating birds had begun arriving on the coast. The second was that, though nobody knew, he was a murderer himself.

Superb Cold War novel. The writing is crisp and witty and full of brilliant invention. If there's a downside it's that the plate is a little overloaded with plot and there are a few moments when you stop to wonder stupid things like 'Would that Londo ...more
William Shaw is reading The Partisan: Superb Cold War spy novel. Witty, observant writing with a nice edginess about it. Quibbles might be that it overloads the plate a little with plot and there are a couple of moments when I found myself wondering if there would have been yellow lines on London roadsides in 1961 (almost 99% not) or whether Lithuanians would have known what a Margarita pizza was (ditto) but I'm jealousy quibbling because I'm jealous mos

“When, on his first day here, he had told the gallery director he was an artist too, he had smiled thinly. ‘How nice.’ The conventional art world was a fortress that built clean white walls around itself to protect the favoured few. It was uninterested in people who hadn’t come up through the system.”
William Shaw, Deadland

“Adams grew up in the sixties, and the Beatles “planted a seed in my head that made it explode. Every nine months there’d be a new album which would be an earth-shattering development from where they were before. We were so obsessed by them that when ‘Penny Lane’ came out and we hadn’t heard it on the radio, we beat up this boy who had heard it until he hummed the tune to us. People now ask if Oasis are as good as the Beatles. I don’t think they are as good as the Rutles.”
Douglas Adams, The Salmon of Doubt

“It was one of those times when the unsatisfactory complexity of the world fades far enough into the distance for the moment to become a thing in itself.”
