Having been telling tales (the good kind and the cheeky) since before memory she finally put fingers to (typewriter) keyboard at age 8 when she attempted to write her own ‘Goosebumps’ tale. Kirstie continued on to teach her ninth grade English teacher the importance of setting word counts for short story assignments by handing in a 27 page novella. Word counts remain her greatest foe to this day(apart from big hairy spiders).

Kirstie runs the gamut of speculative fiction from superheroes and modern fantasy, to pre-apocalyptic fantasy and science fiction, the odd dalliance with Lovecraftian horror, but she loves to write her Retailored Fairy Tales series best and has a particular penchant for cross-dimensional tales. Her stories have won and

I'm sure there's a bunch of people who are going to detest me for my answer but I don't get writers block.

The reason is twofold.

The first fact is I have so little time to write. Between my day job, raising a non-verbal child, maintaining the house, and not being the worst wife ever I have to fight tooth and nail for every scrap of writing time. When writing time is so scarce your fraidy-cat subconscious doesn't dare try to scare you off.

The second fact is I have so many ideas that if I stall on one, I just pick up another. And if for some crazy reason nothing is piquing my interest that day, well there's never a more perfect time for revision and editing ;p(less)

Keep writing. I know it's simple and I know it's been said by many others but it's so true.

Also if you intend to go a traditional publishing route keep submitting. Don't let one rejection make you toss a story aside. If the rejection had feedback, use it then keep submitting. If it didn't keep trying. There's a LOT of people submitting work and only so many stories to be published in that magazine/books to be released by that publisher. You may have a great story on your hands, but it just isn't as good a fit as something else was for that particular editor at that particular time. Put on your armour and keep charging onto the battlefield!(less)

Happy Birthday To Me

My birthday is the same day as World Autism Day, which always feels serendipitous to me since my eldest son has autism. So of course I’ve fallen down a hole in TikTok watching all the sweet/cute/informative videos by and featuring people with autism. I only dragged myself out of this hole long enough to post this because I keep not updating the blog much ;p and let’s be real it’s almost guaranteed

“They suffered from the terrible delusion that something could be done. They seemed prepared to make the world the way they wanted it or die in the attempt, and the trouble with dying in the attempt was that you died in the attempt.”

Terri Windling
“The French fairy tale writers were so popular and prolific that when their stories were eventually collected in the 18th century, they filled forty–one volumes of a massive publication called the Cabinet des Fées. Charles Perrault is the French fairy tale writer whom history has singled out for attention, but the majority of tales in the Cabinet des Fées were penned by women writers who ran and attended the leading salons: Marie–Catherine d’Aulnoy, Henriette Julie de Murat, Marie–Jeanne L'Héritier, and numerous others. These were educated women with an unusual degree of social and artistic independence, and within their use of the fairy tale form one can find distinctly subversive, even feminist subtext.”
Terri Windling, Black Swan, White Raven
