He was a well known Texas Ranger and sergeant in the Civil War. The tale always fascinated me and I set out to write a fictionalized short story about the event unaware of where the decision would lead. Greene was the first book I read about the treatment of children captured by Indians. The book centers on Herman Lehmann captured in the Hill Country of Texas. It was a sobering tale of the harshness of the Native American lifestyle while also a eye opening look at the intoxicating sense of adventure and freedom that seduced a lot of the captured children. Many never wanted to return to the drudgery and work load of their former existence. (less)
