How to Overcome Worry as You Pray Big

I wish I could tell you that while I sit in the waiting room I am peacefully at rest, but that is not the case. I want to overcome worry, but instead I get overwhelmed.

I am not good at waiting. I guess because I grew up in the age of microwaves and instant everything.

I want to be a woman of faith who prays and trusts God with the unknown. I desperately wish I could live peacefully at rest, but that is often not the case.

In actuality, I am more of a Sara type. I want to make things happen at any cost.

I think God needs my help.

I know He is the Savior of the world in my head, but sometimes that doesn’t drop down to my heart. So, I come up with contingency plans.

I think about what I can do differently and say better in hopes of changing things. I worry and wrestle and work myself into a frenzy.

But then He puts me in a corner where I am helpless, and all of my scheming is unveiled.

He leaves me bare, and I realize that my way is lifeless.

When I demand my way, I end up with nothing.

I end up in the exact spot I feared to enter.

There in the darkness, I realize that I am not alone. He speaks to me tenderly.  He woos me to His side with words of compassion. He picks me up and lifts me out of the mire.

I lift up empty hands to Him and hope blooms again.

Maybe you are like me — reluctant to trust Him with everything. Maybe you have schemed and tried to save yourself.

If you’ve landed in a dark place, I want to remind you that you don’t have to stay there. You can offer up your pain and brokenness to Him.

You don’t have to be a Sara type.

Let’s choose differently. We can pray big and believe.

Let’s let go of our worry and worship. Let’s lay down shattered dreams and offer them up to Him.

We can choose to love Him with reckless abandon day and night.

We will persist in praise.

Together let’s keep looking forward with hope because He alone is our salvation.

Let’s Pray Big and Overcome Worry
God will calm you down as you pray.

The enemy of our souls wants us to live overwhelmed by anxiety, but our God is able to do anything. As we spend time in His presence, He comforts our souls and reminds us He is in control.

“Whenever my busy thoughts were out of control, nthe soothing comfort of Your presence calmed me down and overwhelmed me with delight.”  (Psalm 94:19, TPT)

God helps strengthen you as you trust Him with your troubles.

We were never meant to carry these burdens alone. God is all-powerful, and we must lean on Him. He will empower us for what lies ahead as we cry out to Him and ask for His assistance.

“So here’s what I’ve learned through it all: Leave all your cares and anxieties at the feet of the Lord, and measureless grace will strengthen you.” (Psalm 55:22, TPT)

God will step in as your hiding place and help as you surrender all.

Friend, you do not fight alone. You have a Defender, and He is surrounding you with songs of deliverance. Nothing can destroy you because God is your refuge.

“For when I was desperate, overwhelmed, and about to give up, You were the only one there to help. You gave me a way of escape from the hidden traps of my enemies…So I cried out to You, Lord, my only hiding place. You’re all I have, my only hope in this life, my last chance for help.” (Psalm 142:3, 5)

As we pray big, God fills our hearts with wonder and help us overcome worry.

Only God dismantles strongholds and softens hard hearts.

Only God creates beauty out of brokenness.

Only God restores and redeems the desolate and desperate.

His miracles will unravel as we watch and pray.

Let’s stand strong in the gap for one another and expect God is going to do something spectacular.

We overcome worry as we pray big and worship our Almighty God.

Introducing the Pray Big Sisterhood:

Every morning, I wake up and lift my heart to God in prayer.

I praise Him for His glory and goodness.

I surrender my agenda and expectations to His greater kingdom purposes.

I yield my desires to do His will.

And, then I ask for Him to move a mountain.

I cry out to Him for that mountain to crumble.

I believe that God is bigger than any obstacle or stronghold.

Yet, my mountain remains — immovable and unyielding.

Do you have a mountain?   I bet you do.

Like me, you may be discouraged by the darkness that looms large in your view.

You aren’t alone. If we sat down today in my kitchen and shared our stories, I bet we would see similarities.

Together, we would ask God to move two mountains.

With worshipful hearts, let’s keep crying out to the Lord for those mountains to crumble.

Let’s pray big!

Y’all his has been the craziest season ever, but I know that God has a bigger purpose than just our merely surviving the chaos. In hopes of redeeming the time in the weeks ahead, I am inviting you to “Pray Big” as we look to the Lord for even greater things to come.

Let’s ask God to help us have an expectant heart that is not overwhelmed by all the negativity in this world. Let’s pray big and believe God is bigger than the obstacles we are facing. Our Mighty God is going to do more than we can ask, think, or imagine as we pray with hope.

To encourage us on this journey, I have invited my wisest and most Spirit-lead friends to share their heart here in this space for a monthly #PrayBig Guest Post Series. We will start next week and cry out to God together..

I was to also invite you to join a private “Pray Big” Facebook group for sisters to share our stories and surrender them to our mountain-moving God in prayer. Let’s lift up holy hands together and pray big in community.

Let’s Chat: Have you ever seen God move a mountain as you pray big?

How to Make Significant Progress When Your World is Falling Apart

Every year, I tell myself I am going to make significant progress on my goals. I am determined to do the hard work required to see God’s purpose fulfilled in my life. But, I have learned that telling myself something is a whole lot easier than actually living it out. I want to rise above all the chaos and make changes, but life just gets so incredibly crazy.

I have learned that I get easily discouraged. I feel defeated by unexpected circumstances out of my control. The brokenness of this world breaks in, and I give in to despair. Instead of reading through my Bible in a year and exercising every morning, I end up eating Oreo cookies and binging Netflix instead.

This cycle of defeat went on for years until one day a good friend got in my face and told me the truth: God never promised you it was going to be easy. He promised to give you what you need to be successful… but you have to take the brave steps to move forward with faith even when you are scared. Even when it’s hard. Even when you’d rather just give up.

So, I put my big girl pants on and decided to stop making excuses. I will never live a victorious Christian life if I am not willing to do the hard work of walking out my faith. God says I am am more than a conqueror, but first I need to get up off the couch and choose to believe He is able to see me through impossible situations.

This year has been the craziest year ever thanks to a global pandemic, racial tension, and political upheaval. Maybe you are feeling like you’ve wasted so much time sitting around and doing absolutely nothing. We can feel stuck professionally and stagnant in our spiritual routines. So many times, our relationships are messy and unsatisfying. If you are looking back at this last season of your life with a frown, I want to share 3 steps that have helped me make significant progress and persevere through the hardest year of my life.

3 Steps to Make Significant Progress

Write out God’s Divine Purpose for Your Life.

If you don’t know what your calling is, the father of lies will label you a loser and a has-been. He will whisper, “You aren’t good enough to make a difference in this world, and you might as well just give up now.” But God has created you for such a time as this, my sister. Craft a one-sentence mission statement that clarifies your passionate pursuit for God’s glory.

“The fact is that what we are we owe to the hand of God upon us. We are born afresh in Christ, and born to do those good deeds which God planned for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10, PHI)

Create a Visual Reminder of Your Priorities.

Use meaningful words, inspiring pictures, and a splash of color to create a vision board. You want to keep a picture in view of the ground God wants you to cultivate in His kingdom. I place mine on my desk to help me focus with intention on tending to my family, my ministry, my friendships, my health, my personal growth & my spiritual well being.

“Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” (Proverbs 16:3, NET)

Write out prayer-infused action steps monthly, weekly, and daily.

Once a week, make a date with yourself and sit down to plan out a strategy to take brave steps forward in faith. John Maxwell once said that “small disciplines repeated with consistency every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.” What is one simple change you can make this week to start?

Two years ago, I invested in a resource that has saved my life and helped me move forward despite all the crazy changes that have unexpectedly disrupted my plans. The Powersheets Goal Planner showed me how to set intentional goals in each of my priority areas and stick to them. Every month, I pull out my book and develop an action plan with monthly, weekly, and daily steps to make progress. Using this system has kept me accountable and  allowed me make the necessary adjustments along the way.

I now have a place to record all the wins where God and I have made a breakthrough — I can visually see the transformation in my life step by step and month by month. Powersheets has given me a reason to celebrate even in the middle of the chaos. Honestly at the end of 2019, I thought I hadn’t accomplished much, but when I look at my Powersheets, I can clearly see that is a lie from the pit of hell. Using this wonderful resource has been life changing for me.

In case you missed it, I actually went live on Facebook to talk about my love for the Powersheets Goal Planner.

“Live life, then, with a due sense of responsibility, not as men who do not know the meaning and purpose of life but as those who do. Make the best use of your time, despite all the difficulties of these days. Don’t be vague but firmly grasp what you know to be the will of God.” (Ephesians 5:16-17, Phillips)

Do you want to make significant progress? To help you get started, I’ve created two great resources for you: The “My Mission Statement” worksheet will walk you through the steps to creating a clear focus for your year. Plus, I also provided a list of 10 mission-minded Scriptures for you to print out and pray over this week for inspiration. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.

Friend, let’s hold on to this sweet promise: “Write this. Write what you see. Write it out in big block letters so that it can be read on the run. This vision-message is a witness pointing to what’s coming. It aches for the coming—it can hardly wait! And it doesn’t lie. If it seems slow in coming, wait. It’s on its way. It will come right on time.” (Habakkuk 2:2-3, MSG)

Every day we can take brave steps forward and believe that even greater things are yet to come. God has a vision for our lives for this season, and it is not on standby.

God’s purpose for your life is not on pause. Press on, friend.

How to Pray for Wisdom When You Feel Inadequate

Last May, I unexpectedly became a first-time parent to an almost potty trained 3-year-old.  I had never purchased a box of diapers in my life, nor could I ever have imagined reading bedtime stories to a toddler at age 52. When friends ask me how I am adjusting, I tell them that I am laughing just like Sarah in the Old Testament.

Only God. He never ceases surprising me and stretching me out of my comfort zone.

Just two days before this tiny human invaded our quiet home, I had stood in front of 200 women at church and encouraged them to pray for wisdom and trust that the Holy Spirit would empower them in their roles as daughters, wives, mothers, and friends. The confidence I spoke with that evening evaporated as I tried to convince a strong-willed little boy to put on his pajamas.

God was calling me into a new assignment that would require discernment and strength that I currently lacked. Little boys do not come with an instruction manual, and I had no idea what to do. More than ever, I needed God’s all-sufficient grace to help me.

Overcome by my inadequacy, I sat in my kitchen and had a good cry. Once I let all the emotions run out, I turned to the only resource on parenting I had at my disposal. I opened my Bible to Ephesians 1, which I had shared with my sisters earlier that week, and I read with fresh eyes: “I pray that you will understand the incredible greatness of God’s power for us who believe Him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead…” (Ephesians 1:19-20, NLT)

Nothing is impossible for our God. The One who conquered death itself would help me through diaper changes.

I don’t know what your God-sized assignment may be, friend. Maybe like me you are on your knees wondering if you have enough strength left to take another step. The road ahead is unclear, and you are fighting against fear and doubt. We may often feel incapable, but we can trust our God is able. He will empower us and enrich our lives as we trust Him and obey.

Sometimes we are so scared and unsure that we lack the words to pray. We desperately need God to show us which way to go, but we don’t know what to say. Whenever I am facing a situation that is beyond my understanding, I like to turn to the book of Proverbs for guidance. The 31 chapters in the book of wisdom correspond with the days of the month. I prayerfully read whatever chapter matches the number on my calendar with a pen in hand…

How to Win the War during an Angry Election Year

Facebook is a scary place during  an election year. The Trump-ers are blowing their horns loud and proud. They are on the winning team, and they think they know best. But, the Biden Bunch are not going quietly either. They’ve adopted the hashtag #ThePresidentIsACryBaby, and they are taking their anger and unhappiness to the streets in protest.

I think I’ve unfollowed like a million angry politically loud friends on social media this year. I just can’t handle the noise.

Why can’t we just learn to listen to one another and realize that no one in the White House is going to make things right?

We live in a broken world, and only God can redeem and restore us. He alone can uproot the seeds of sin and death that our willful, disobedient choices have planted. Only God can unite and heal what seems completely broken and divided.

As I look toward the next four years, what exactly is my role as a Daughter of the King in the midst of a disruptive, captive land? My job is not to prove how right I am. I am not here to be the Holy Spirit and convict the hearts of men. I am here to be His hands and feet. I am here to share the Good News that only Jesus sets us truly free and leads us with integrity.

Have you gotten quiet and withdrawn from the world because of all the noise and arguing? Don’t let the enemy silence you now. You need to wage war — but not like the world with a loud angry voice. We fight with spiritual weapons that overcome evil and point people to salvation.

4 Ways to Win the War during an Angry Election Year
Be a Reconciliation Ambassador

Don’t pick sides. Look for common ground and stay open to Spirit-led opportunities for conversation. Your job is to help build bridges between this lost disenfranchised world and our Savior.  That’s the only platform that really makes a difference.

“For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.    And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view…. He has committed to us the message of reconciliation.    We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (II Corinthians 5:14-21)

Be a Wise Peacemaker

People feel lied to and lost, but you know the Leader who really sets men free and leads to lasting peace. Point the confused and shaken toward the solid Truth found in God’s unchanging Word. Let them know that there is more at stake here than the next four years — their eternal destiny hands in the balance. If They place their full confidence in the real most powerful man in the world, they will never be disappointed.

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.    Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.    For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.   But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.    Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness” (James 3:13-18).

Be a Loving Servant

Many people are overwhelmed by fear, doubt, loneliness, and anger right now. How will you come alongside them to let them know God loves them? A simple act of kindness can crack open a hard heart to God”s redemption. Ask God to help you find simple ways to use your gifts to bless those who are hurting. Help meet needs and sow seeds of love to break up the fallow ground of bitter hearts.

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.    For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other” (Galatians 5:13-15).

Be a light in a dark place

Shine brightly. People will note your confident trust in an eternal God who keeps His promises during dark times. Your life testifies that God is alive and at work even though we are all walking through a very hard season. Live like you know greater things are yet to come.

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16)

When You Want to Hide from the World

Ever feel like you want to hide from the world? It was the middle of an unexpectedly hard day, and suddenly I had an irresistible urge to go into my bedroom, lock the door, and get under the covers.

(I may have also craved double stuff Oreos, but I ate all of those in March after we went on COVID lockdown.)

I stood in the middle of my living room and gave myself a pep talk. No, Lyli. You cannot hide from all of your problems.

I will press on.

I will pray big.

I will praise loud.

I am putting on my big girl pants. I will persevere.

How about you, friend? Is your soul weary? Are you looking for a way out? Do you wish you could disappear for a bit and not have to worry about all the impossible situations in your life? Believe me, I totally get it. I am tired of fighting battles I can’t seem to ever win. And this has been the hardest year ever to stay hopeful.

I may have a lot of crazy problems right now, but my God is constantly present. I know He faithfully provides. I can trust He always prevails.

Here is what the Lord whispered to me this week: You just need to stop trying to fix everything yourself. When you strive on your own, you will always end up exhausted.

On those days when my anxiety level is high, I need to remember that God is my hiding place.

The safest place in the world is when we stand in the circle of God’s protective embrace. We can seek the Lord and let Him be our stronghold. He is strong when we are weak.

When You Want to Hide from the World
Run to the Lord and make Him your Refuge.

The enemy of our soul wants us to cower in fear and live consumed by doubt. He wants us to live defeated lives, but we have a warrior God who has promised us to deliver us. The Lord Himself has promised to protect us and be our personal hiding place. In Him we find safety and support. In His presence, we gain strength and security.

“…surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him. You are a hiding place for me; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” (Psalm 32:6-8, ESV)

Fear not the unknown because your faithful God will always uplift you.

Remember you are on the winning team. With God on your side, you will not be overthrown no matter what obstacles you may be facing. Any defeat you experience today is just a temporary setback. God will shield you on every side from the enemy’s onslaught. Your Defender will raise you above all discouragement and darkness.

“Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear… For He will hide me in His shelter in the day of trouble… And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me…” (Psalm 27:3, 5,6)

Fix your mind on an eternal view and stop minding what the earthly values.

Our story is not finished yet, and God has promised us a spectacular ending. Let’s purpose to press in to Jesus and persevere in what pleases Him. It’s a daily decision to die to self and surrender all to the Lord. Our journey with God is a marathon, not a sprint. Jesus is at the finish line, and heaven awaits. Keep your eyes on the prize, not on your problems.

“Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ Who is your life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.” (Colossians 3:2-3, ESV)

Feeling like you want to hide from the world? God is your refuge and hiding place. I’ve created a one-page printable packed full of Scriptural promises to help you meditate on this Truth and fuel your faith. [image error]

When we make God our hiding place, we gain strength and find the help we need. Instead of living consumed by worry, our hearts and minds turn to worship.

All around us there are people stuck in a quagmire of defeat and discouragement, and they will notice that we live differently. We can testify to anyone who asks that God is our secret place. Our joy comes from knowing Jesus. We can point them to our Protector, our Stronghold whose presence will never leave us.

When you want to hide from the world, remember Jesus is your safe haven. Run to Him for help.

When You Are Still Waiting for Your Breakthrough

I am still waiting, and I really hate it. I hate that nothing’s happening. I hate that I can’t change anything. I hate feeling like I am totally out of control of how things will turn out. When is my breakthrough coming?

I’ve cried out to the Lord and asked Him why I’m still waiting. And here is what He replied to my restless soul: Just stay silent.

I’m fighting for you… just be still and depend on Me. I keep hearing my God whisper these words over and over again regarding a situation where I feel really stuck. I want to scream, but God has clearly told me to simply keep my mouth closed and trust His timing. I desperately want to believe the Lord is at work in ways that I currently cannot see.

I hate waiting. [Insert scream of frustration here.]

In my quiet time, I keep coming across Scriptures about waiting, and I finally realized God was trying to get my attention.

Here is what I’ve learned: God wants me to relax. He wants me to quietly place my confidence in Him. God has promised that if I surrender everything to Him He will do more than I can ask, think, or imagine.

If I wait well, God will win the day, and I will get to see His wonder.

Friend, are you desperately waiting for a breakthrough and wishing God would make things different? Perhaps you are praying for restoration. Do you have a loved one who has created a lot of chaos in your life? Maybe you are reaching for the hem of His garment for healing. You might be wrestling with a false accusation at work or wondering how you will manage to pay all the bills this month. Know this: You are not alone in the waiting. Your God sees you, and He will not stay silent.

If you are holding on for dear life and feeling helpless while you wait like me, I want to share with you 3 ways God has shown me I can win the day while I wait for my difficult circumstances to change.

How to Win While You’re “Still Waiting”
Don’t rely on your own strength and stick it out.

Trust in God alone and place your hope in Him. You can fully depend on His power to do what you cannot.

But for You, O Lord, do I wait; it is You, O Lord my God, who will answer.” (Psalm 38:15, ESV)

View your waiting period as a season of God’s grace to strengthen you.

Perhaps the Lord has purposefully situated you not so that you will be stuck, but so that you can gain spiritual tenacity. Stop asking “Why me?” and pray “Have Your way in me, Lord.”

“Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore He exalts Himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for Him.” (Isaiah 30:18)

“…but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)

Let God to decide the terms and the timing.

Your God is sovereign over all the details, and nothing escapes His notice. You can stop striving and scheming and just surrender control. He knows best how to orchestrate the “how” and the “when.”

“From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides You, who acts for those who wait for Him. (Isaiah 64:4)

Seek the Lord, not solutions.

Remember how you kept your nose in your textbook and studied hard right before finals when you were in school? That’s that same intensity we need to have as we wait. We should open up our Bibles and investigate who God is and what He has to say as we wait.

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end;  they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in Him.’ The Lord is good to those who wait for Him, to the soul who seeks Him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

Are you still waiting for your breakthrough? To help you wait with wisdom, I put together a list of  “10 Scriptures to Help You Wait Well.” Download a copy, print it out, and meditate on one passage each morning for the next 10 days. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and  grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.

My sister, keep pressing in to Jesus and praising Him as you wait. Your breakthrough is coming.

When we trust God with surrendered hearts as we wait, He gives us a testimony to share. Our breakthrough story will be even sweeter because we won the victory by letting God fight our battles. Everyone around us will see that we don’t have to strive to win the war because we have a faithful God who is always fighting for us.

If you are still waiting for your breakthrough, stay steadfast and trust God will triumph in the end.

3 Ways to Fuel Your Faith First Thing in the Morning

Mornings are not my jam. I am more of a night owl girl. But here’s the thing: starting my day off right sets the tone for the next 24 hours. If I am not intentional about those first few minutes after the alarm goes off, I end up frazzled and frustrated most of the day. Taking steps to fuel my faith the first 60 minutes of my day makes a huge difference. I want to align my heart to the Lord’s the first thing in the morning.

The last few months have been the craziest ever. Some days, I am not sure I even want to get out of bed. Between this COVID crisis, all the racial tension, and the political discord, I am struggling to find my joy. I know that God is in control, and He will see us through even this, but my mind is on fire and full of negative thoughts. I need to quiet down the ping-pong match between doubt and fear going on 24-7 in my brain.

Bruce laughs at me because many mornings I sit in bed and listen to what he calls my waking up song. But I am making a purposeful decision to make my morning different. I am determined to reprogram my brain to start my day with Jesus. I don’t want to listen to the voice of fear. I want to tune in to the whisper of the Holy Spirit. His mercy sings over me every morning — I just need to stop and listen.

The Lord and I have a history. We have come far together, and I want to believe that God is not done yet. Even in this, He has a plan. His love is singing over me. He is at work in ways that I don’t see.

Friend, how are you doing? I’ve spoken to so many of you who are struggling right now. You want to see His goodness. You want to trust His faithfulness. You are hanging on to hope even though you feel stuck.

My sister, God sees you. He wants to speak life over you right now. He loves your fiercely, and He always goes to war and fights for you.

Over the last few weeks, this blog space has been mostly quiet because I’ve been doing business with my God. I’ve slowed down and tried to really listen to His voice. I’ve turned off the chaotic news, stopped scrolling through the social media junk, and just sat at His feet.

I’m determined to really hear from God first thing in the morning. It’s hard work — because I am a highly distracted woman with way too much on her mind…but I  am making some progress.

Today, I want to share with you 3 simple things you can do to draw near to your God as you start your day. I promise you, this will make a difference in your overall disposition.

3 Ways to Fuel Your Faith First Thing in the Morning
Start with a Simple Prayer.

Some days, I have no words to say to God when I wake up. So, I have started borrowing them. Most mornings, I echo the Psalmist and simply pray, “Guide me in Your truth and teach me, for You are God my Savior, and my hope is in You all day long.” (Psalm 25:2, NIV). I love using Scriptural words as I talk to God. These words of life help me replace the lies of the enemy with His life-giving promises.

I treasured Beth Moore’s original prayer book full of topical Scriptures titled simply Praying God’s Word. It’s been a resource I’ve turned to over and over again when I am battling on my knees for my family. But just this week, I purchased this updated revised version that takes the topical readings and divides them out into 365 days of Scriptural prayers. On those mornings where I lack words, I can turn to Scripture and use this resource to help me when I am overwhelmed and too weary to form sentences. I’m super excited about adding Praying God’s Word Day by Day to my nightstand.

Another wonderful resource that has encouraged my prayer life these past few weeks has been to learn from my writing friend, Rachel Britton. This girl is a prayer warrior, and her website is packed full of wonderful intercessory resources! I loved discovering that I could sign up for her daily prayer prompts via email. This summer she also added “Prayers for Refreshment” via email for her subscribers. And, for all the Alexa fans out there, she has created an app with wonderful prayers that you can download and then ask Alexa to “say a prayer.” How amazing is that?

“Lord, in the morning You will hear me; in the morning I will present my case to You and then wait expectantly for an answer.” (Psalm 5:3, NET)

Settle Your Heart with a Sweet Word of Encouragement.

When I am going through a hard season, I always keep a devotional book on my nightstand. I am a Bible study nerd, and I love getting into the meat of the Word, but on mornings when I am weary and can’t think straight because life is so incredibly stressful, starting with a sweet devotional read helps me calm down and encourages me.

I’ve shared “5 Sweet Devotional Books to Cheer Up your Weary Spirit” here, but a new favorite this year is The Quiet Place by Nancy Leigh Demoss. This compact little book sits on my nightstand, or I can tuck it into my purse and take it with me on the go. It has 365 readings, and it has been a comforting friend to me in 2020.

“I am counting on the Lord; yes, I am counting on him. I have put my hope in his word.” (Psalm 130:5, NLT)

Slow down your racing thoughts by writing out Scripture.

I finally invested in the Write the Word  journal a few weeks ago, and I have really enjoyed sitting down with my Bible and copying out large junks of Scripture in my beautiful Cultivate Forgiveness Journal. Every day, I am slowing down and reminding myself that God calls me to forgive as I have been forgiven. I am slowly writing His HIs Word on my heart as I put pen to paper, and it’s been good for my soul.

Want to join me in writing the Word on your heart? You purchase your own Write the Word journal here. They have a blank journal for you to choose your own Scripture each day, or you can pick one of the following topics: forgiveness, confidence, joy, hope, faith, and contentment.

And then God answered: “Write this.

Need more help to fuel your faith first thing in the morning? I’ve created a one-page printable of 12 Scriptural prayers to help you prepare your heart for your time with God as you begin your day. This week, you can make one simple change to start your morning with greater intention, and you will step into your day fueled by the power of the Holy Spirit. Saying no to negative thinking and soaking in God’s Word will empower you to walk with greater wisdom and experience fuller joy. You can overcome all the mental chaos of this present age as you make room for God to renew your thinking and restore your hope. Let’s trust that God is in control, and He has greater things in store for us.

Starting your morning with God sets you up for success.

3 Truths You Need to Remember When You Cannot Fall Asleep

For a solid year, I kept a list of verses on my nightstand that I would read out loud to myself before I turned off the light. I was carrying so many worries that my mind refused to slow down. How do you quiet your brain when you cannot fall asleep? This is a daily battle in my life.

Do you struggle to turn off your brain and rest? Maybe like me when you lay your head down on the pillow, your fears become animated and start to play like a horror movie in your semi-conscious mind. You picture every terrible thing that can happen in full color and end up shaking under the covers.

My husband lays his head down and starts snoring away peacefully within 5 minutes. I hear the rise and fall of his breath, and frankly I am jealous of his slumber. Some nights, I can lay in bed for hours wresting with the “what ifs” and “if onlys.”

What if my loved one never turns their life around?
If only we could all get along? Why are people so mean to each other?
How am I going to make it through this mess in one piece?
Where will I find what I need to fix my problem?
Why is God allowing this to happen to me right now?
Will anything ever change?

I will toss and turn in bed all night long trying to fix my real problems and find a solution to avoid the catastrophic future I am sure is coming. How about you, friend? Do you struggle to shut off the noise in the night hours?

The God of peace has granted us the gift of sweet sleep, but the enemy of our souls does everything he can to disrupt our rest and restoration. I’m learning that I need to purposefully resolve to fix my thoughts on what is true and silence the voice of fear.

When You Cannot Fall Asleep Remember:
God stays on watch and never sleeps.

You can close your eyes because God always has His eyes on you. Day and night, you have a Deliverer.

“He will guard and guide me, never letting me stumble or fall. God is my keeper; He will never forget nor ignore me. / He will never slumber nor sleep; He is the Guardian-God for his people, Israel. / Jehovah Himself will watch over you; He’s always at your side to shelter you safely in His presence. / He’s protecting you from all danger both day and night.” (Psalm 121:3-6, TPT)

The enemy cannot harm your sweet sleep because God is on your side.

You have a loving Heavenly Father who sits at your bedside and sings over you. The Lord wants you to rest free from cares and distractions and awaken refreshed.

“When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. / Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, / for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.” (Proverbs 3:24-26, AMP)

God works bring blessing while you sleep.

Words We don’t need to burn the midnight oil because God is always at work. Our Lord has promised to provide everything we need, and He will forever surround us with HIs favor.

“It is vain for you to rise up early, to take rest late, to eat the bread of anxious toil—for He gives blessings to His beloved in sleep.” (Psalm 127:2, AMPC)

Need more help for those long nights when you cannot fall asleep? I’ve created a one-page printable with 8 “Bedtime Bible Verses to Help You Sleep Peacefully.” Grab a copy and end your evenings by reminding yourself that God has given you the gift of sweet sleep.  Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and  grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.

When we remind ourselves that God is in control, we can surrender our fear and doubt and worry to His care. We experience peaceful slumber as we run to Him and recognize He is Lord over every concern.

Tonight, we can lay in bed and say, “Lord, I know that this situation is impossibly hard, but I believe nothing is impossible for You.” We can close our eyes and pray, “Father, I don’t see how things will change, but I know You work all things together for my good and Your glory.” In the quiet, we can choose to worship rather than worry. God will refresh our hearts and minds as we place our confident trust in Him.

When you cannot fall asleep, focus on God’s faithfulness and find rest.

3 Really Simple Steps to Tame the Worry Monster

I learned something scary about myself. I have an unseen enemy inside me. A monster is lurking in the dark corners of  my mind. Lately, taming the Worry Monster is a daily battle I’ve been losing.

I’ve been trying to tame the Worry Monster for a long time. This sinister enemy sneaks in when I least expect it and robs me of my peace.

A while back, my car was in the shop, so Bruce drove me to work. We’d stayed up too late, and I’d dragged my comatose body out of bed before its time. I sat in the car in Zombie wife mode. My whole being was communicating a message: Don’t talk to me. Trust me, this will not go well.

I really should have just stayed in bed and called in sick.

But I digress, I was telling you about the frightening self-revelation I experienced.

It all started when I decided to turn on the radio in hopes of waking myself up and hypnotizing myself into a happier mood. I turned the dial off my husband’s pre-set talk radio station (Yuck!) and landed on .K-LOVE.

The music was like caffeine in my veins. Soon, I was tapping along and even singing. Bruce was overjoyed to witness my resurrection from Zombieland.

After a song or two, the DJ’s started talking about something nonsensical and silly in the news. They bantered back and forth about how scientists have discovered that there is actually a Worry Gene. Yep, that’s right. If you are a worry wart, it’s probably in your DNA. Blame your ancestors.

Bruce and I laughed about it as we pulled into the parking space at work. My knight in shining armor walked me in to the office and carried my heavy bags and even opened the door for me.

Squeak. “You’ve got a creaky door there, ma’am. I can take care of that for you if you have some WD-40.” I pointed my husband toward the office supply closet to see if he could find something to take the squeak out.

I watched him turn the corner and stayed by the door anticipating his return.

I stood in silence for what seemed like an eternity and shifted my weight from one foot to the other. After a few minutes, I frowned at the clock.

Why’s he been gone so long? I imagined my husband prostrate on the floor and not breathing. I considered calling 911.

Right before I broke down in tears, my man came bouncing around the corner empty-handed.

“I have the worry gene,” I confessed. Left alone with my thoughts for more than 90 seconds, I will construct an imaginary apocalypse.”

The Worry Monster is lurking around in the corners of my mind seeking to squelch my joy and steal my serenity.

Have you met the Worry Monster? His ability to magnify your fears knows no bounds if you give him free rein.

With this crazy COVID pandemic covering us all with a cloud of doom, the Worry Monster has gained a whole lot of power over my day. I fret about my family ending up in the ER on a ventilator. (No one has yet.) I am anxious that we won’t be able to pay the mortgage. (We still have money in the bank though). I am constantly making up imaginary disasters in my head.

I have lost a lot of sleep this year thanks for the terrible Worry Monster. I’ve decided that I can’t fight this adversary all on my own, so I’ve been digging into the Word and asking God to fill me with Truth, peace, and joy. Every day, I feel like I won’t win this battle, but I know that God is greater than my fears.

Just a few days ago, I received a series of frantic texts from a friend who was facing the bully head on. My response was simple:

Stop, Breathe, and Pray.

It’s like stop, drop and roll when your mind is on fire. You must turn your worries into prayers.

How to Tame the Worry Monster
Stop

Tell your brain to stop thinking crazy. Chuck the enemy’s lies and take your thoughts captive (II Corinthians 10:4-5).
Tell your thoughts to obey what you know is true. Remind yourself of what is right, noble, lovely, and pure (Philippians 4:8).
Remind yourself that God has not given you a spirit of fear. You are armed with His power, love, and of a sound mind (II Timothy 1:7).

Breathe

Let God’s peace invade your soul (Psalm 34:1-4, MSG).
Be still and know that He is God (Psalm 46:10).
Allow Him room to restore your soul (Psalm 23:1-3).

Pray

Turn your worries into praises and petitions (Philippians 4:6-7).
Cast all your anxiety on Him, and let Him care for you (I Peter 5:7).
Persist in fighting on your knees and never lose heart. Be a prayer warrior, not a worry wart.  (Luke 18:1)

Want some ammunition to help you tame the worry monster? I’ve created a one-page printable with 10 Scriptures to help you remember your God is bigger than bad days. Download a copy and read through these sweet promises every morning to help you say no to worry this week  Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and https://lylidunbar.com/sign-up/ grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.

As we say no to  the lies of the enemy, fill our lives with His peace, and draw near to God with surrendered hearts, our anxieties will lose their power. God’s grace will strengthen us and give us exactly what we need to face this day.

All around us people are filled with fear and doubt, but we can follow Jesus and find a firm place to stand.  As we hold fast to His Word, others will see that they can find hope in Christ even when life is hard.  Worry won’t win if we surrender all to Jesus with worshipful hearts.

To tame the Worry Monster, just simply stop, breathe, and pray.

3 Life Lessons Learned the Hard Way

My students loved it when I graded on the curve. As a teacher, I accepted that if no one got a perfect score on the test, then a little adjustment was required. Consider it “educational grace.” No one wants to learn in the “school of hard knocks.” I acknowledge that sometimes I’ve been badly bruised by lessons learned the hard way. The truths we learn from our hardest falls are often the ones that help us the most.

I spent seventeen years in a high school classroom. As the years progressed, I became more and more lenient. A note from Mom meant you got an extra day to finish your homework. I started grading student work in pencil, rather than bleeding in red all over their words and hearts.

Life will either soften you to the humanity in others, or you become jaded and untractable.

I want to be a sponge, not a rock. I want to be a safe place to land, not a stumbling block.

God has softened me to the brokenness in others by providing me some painful “field trips.” Over the last 9 years, I’ve experienced miscarriage, sickness, and depression. I’ve grieved the loss of loved ones, and I’ve walked with those who are grieving.

I’ve hit rock bottom and found that God is still there.

Learning is a gift… even when pain is your teacher. I am so thankful that my God writes in pencil and that He understands my weakness. I am thankful that God provides a learning curve of grace.

I am a work in progress. You are a work in progress. God is not finished teaching us yet, and we have much to learn still.

As an ongoing student enrolled in the School of Hard Knocks, I’ve come to understand that I need to play well with others. I have an enemy, but he is not flesh and blood. My “schoolmates” are fighting hard to make it through each day, and my job is to encourage, to pray, to listen, and to refrain from judgment.

Teaching cured me of “perfectionism.” I’ve learned that rules are meant to give you structure, but you also need to be a little flexible. It’s okay to color outside the lines sometimes.

I am going to make mistakes. You are going to make mistakes. Your best teacher may just be your last mistake. Mistakes are just unexpected learning experiences. Pain and sorrow and failure are portals to discovery.

Maybe you have a failed marriage or a prodigal child. Perhaps you’ve lost your dream job or lost a valuable friendship. We’ve all learned the hard way, and let’s just acknowledge that it really hurts.

As I’ve surrendered my brokenness to the Master Teacher, I’ve learned to a few heart lessons….and today I want to share them with you. Maybe this will encourage you if you are in a hard place.

3 Life Lessons Learned the Hard Way
Cultivate thankfulness.

Today is a gift. Hebrews 12:15 encourages me to “keep a sharp eye out for weeds of bitter discontent.A heart of gratitude is a teachable heart.

Choose to love and forgive.

I’ve learned to let go of my expectations and and allow others room to be human. I Peter 4:8 reminds me: “Love each other as if your life depended on it. Love makes up for practically anything.”

Cooperate with others humbly, rather than give in to selfish comparison.

I want to be a grace giver who learns from the stories of others. Romans 12:17 & 18 in The Message challenge: “Don’t hit back; discover beauty in everyone. If you’ve got it in you, get along with everybody. Don’t insist on getting even; that’s not for you to do.

Maybe you’ve been holding on to your red pen for too long, and you need to pick up your pencil. Who do you need to extend grace to today?

Maybe you think you are failure because of your mistakes. Listen to the gentle voice of your Teacher. There is grace for you. He is not finished with you yet.

May this be our prayer as we sit in God’s schoolroom and listen up: “Show me how You work, God, school me in Your ways.” Psalm 25:4, MSG

So, here is your homework for this week:

Write out Psalm 25:4 or grab the free printable graphic from the Faith Fuel Library. Post it on your fridge or computer screen or bathroom mirror — somewhere. where you will see it and remember.
Spend a few minutes each morning this week inviting God to teach you. Tell Him you are ready and willing to learn. Read a short passage in the Bible with pen in hand. (Suggestion: Proverbs is a good place to turn if you are in need of wisdom. Today is the 17th — Read Proverbs 17.)
At the close of your day, set aside a few minutes to sit quietly before the Lord. Grab a cup of coffee or tea and sit in a comfy chair thinking over your day and asking the Holy Spirit to teach you. If you have a notebook or journal, keep it close by with your favorite pen just in case you want to record a nugget of wisdom.
Close your time of reflection in prayer. Place your hands in your lap with palms open and up ready to receive. Surrender you day to the Lord. Tell Him you are listening.

Want to go even deeper and pray big?

I’m sharing a copy of My Pray Big Prayer Calendar with you. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and  grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library. Print out your copy and start each morning inviting God to strengthen your step and breathe fresh wind into your weary spirit.

Lessons learned the hard way help us to grow, and then one day we get to give back.  We will see someone struggling with the same thing we’ve already walked through, and we can turn to them and let them know they are going to be okay. We can say, “God got me through, and you are going to come through this stronger.”

Lessons learned the hard way can bring healing.
