Get in the Game

I was standing at the podium at the front of my classroom awaiting the arrival of my 2nd period class at 8:30 AM when a frantic teenager ran through the door with fear written all over her face.

“Ma’am, I need to go to the office to call my mom. I forgot I had a soccer game today and left my uniform at home.” I wrote the unprepared athlete a pass to the office and prayed a silent prayer that mom had washed her uniform.

Some athletes sleep with the soccer ball close to their heart and wake up still dreaming of kicking the ball into the goal. Others tend to sit on the sidelines and forget to put on their game face.

This is why Paul felt it necessary to challenge the early church in Rome to put on the armor of light. Lest they forget that they were in a battle and aimlessly wander through their day without the necessary equipment.

The Apostle is warning us that time is short. Today is the day for us to fully clothe ourselves in the grace of Christ and glisten with His glory. We are children of the light in a world that is growing increasingly dark. His return is imminent, and tomorrow we may not have the opportunity to reach that neighbor with the Gospel. We have to get in the game now.

Do you have your game face on? Do you faithfully strap on the sharpened sword of Truth every morning? Are you protecting your heart and mind with the shield of faith and helmet of salvation? We cannot wage war in the power and might of the Spirit if we are still clinging on to the garments of the flesh.

I don’t want to be caught with my uniform off on the day that Jesus returns. This week, let’s purpose to consistently get in the game as soon as our feet hit the floor.

Don’t get caught with your uniform off on the day that Jesus returns. Get in the game.

Did you hear the news?

I walk with a limp. I’ve not only faced physical limitations, but crippling circumstances have knocked me to my knees as well.

Over the last few years, I’ve met quite a few “fellow limpers” through this blog — brave souls who overcome life’s challenges and keep limping forward in faith.

I’ve learned that there is healing in sharing our stories. That’s why I’ve decided to write a book about how God transforms our limps into a launching pad for His glory.

Calling all Limpers

Are you slogging through life and finding it painfully hard to keep moving? How has God helped you to hobble onward toward His strength and healing? I’d love to hear your limping story.

Just click on this link and fill out a short survey.

And, if you have a courageous limping friend with a story I need to hear, please share this post with them.

5 Flavors of a Lifesaver

Every weekday at 4:30 PM, I’d position myself on the sidewalk and stand watch.

His arrival was as predictable as the persistent tick tock of Mickey Mouse watch on my tiny left wrist.

He’d guide the beat up red Pinto into the same single parking space and climb out with a sloppy smile on his face. A kiss and hug later, he’d dig into his shirt pocket and pull out a prize.

My greedy hands grabbed the packet of 5-flavored lifesavers and gobbled them down in less than 10 minutes. Pineapple was my favorite.

He’d shake his head in disbelief and caution me to slow down.

It’s hard to believe how quickly the sweetness has slipped through my fingers. Today, we laid my lifesaver to rest. He lived and loved with a quiet, steady strength.

For the last several weeks, I’ve immersed myself in the study of a beautiful love story found in the pages of the Old Testament. Just this morning, I realized how my Abuelo Romeo mirrored the example of Boaz. His Ruth was named Lela, and he sheltered her under his stalwart wing for 69 years.

I want to share with you a portion of the tantalizing treats I tasted right at their kitchen table. Every morsel is a hearty meal.

5 Flavors of a Lifesaver
Compassionate Kindness

Stir up warmth, gentleness and concern to whet the appetite of your loved ones.

What is desirable in a man is his kindness, And it is better to be a poor man than a liar. (Proverbs 19:22, NASB)

Selfless Service

Show up daily with a treat for others in your pocket. Ask yourself how you can sweeten their day.

Do not withhold good from those who need it, when you have the ability to help. (Proverbs 3:27, NET)

Persistent Diligence

The most delectable meals are prepared under a slow, constant flame. Season the pot daily without fail for savory fare.

The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.  (Proverbs 21:5, NIV)

Consistent Integrity

Resist the temptation to take shortcuts. Skimping on wholesome, healthy ingredients never satisfies.

A poor person who walks in his integrity is better than one who is perverse in his ways even though he is rich. (Proverbs 28:6, NLT)

Courageous Obedience

Sow seeds of righteousness, and you will cultivate flavorful fruit. Tending the soil of your heart is the secret to a sweet life.

If you are willing and obedient, You shall eat the good of the land. (Isaiah 1:19, NKJV)

Tending the soil of your heart is the secret to a sweet life.

Friends, God has sweetness in store for us. Let’s step into the circle of our Lifesaver’s embrace and gobble up every morsel with with a greedy appetite.

Your Lifesaver has sweetness in store for you. Gobble up every morsel.

6 Ways to Extend Grace

I unzipped my purse and started fishing for my wallet as I bit my lower lip in shame.

With my driver’s license and insurance card in hand, I scrambled out of the car with the strong wind of condemnation whipping across my face.

I thought I’d looked in the rear-view mirror, but I guess I missed that blind spot.

As I limped toward the smash up behind me, my heart finally crashed and flat-lined. All week long, I’d held on to the steering wheel as tragic circumstances had slammed up against me and my man. We didn’t sign up for a demolition derby. I wanted off this ricochet ride.

I’m so sorry. That was totally my fault.” I managed to look her straight in the eye and not cry.

As she examined the damage, I cringed. Her fancy car was probably worth my entire salary for 2016.

“You know what, there’s really not that much damage, and I don’t have time to sit here and wait for the police. You can go. Just be more careful. Okay?”

God bless you, rich lady in the black BMW. You chose to ignore the evident black marks and scratches.

As I strapped my seat belt back on, I thanked God for U-turns and open lanes to forgiveness.

6 Ways to Extend God’s Grace
Forgive the Fallen

Before you sling accusations at another sinner, remember God’s love has lifted you up out of a messy mire.

Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Colossians 3:13, NLT

Help the Hurting

Don’t stand on the sidelines when one of your teammates is wounded. We are most like Christ when we step toward suffering and bandage the weary with the healing  balm of God’s mercy.

When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality. Romans 12:13

Praise your People

Gratitude adds a sweet flavor and spices up a bland day. To awaken another’s appetite for good fare, sprinkle affirmations liberally.

May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ give you grace and peace. I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus. I Corinthians 1:3-4

Believe the Best about your Buddies

Every life given to God is a flower in bloom. Take note of the sweet fragrance and beauty in others.

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. Philippians 1:6

Build up the Bruised and Broken

Speak words of support and shy away from slamming others with stony verbal responses.

… Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. Ephesians 4:29

Love the Lovely and the Loony Alike

Charity clings to compassion when the world cries for condemnation. Choose to cheer and celebrate rather than complain and criticize.

Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Ephesians 4:2

Offering God’s grace to an offender opens up the door to hope and healing.

Tell Shame You Have a Savior

Shame paid us a visit on Tuesday.

He was not an invited guest. The sneaky stinker walked right through our front door like he owned the place.

As he mouthed off brazen accusations, my soul shattered into a million pieces of sorrow.

Ironically, just hours before Shame crashed my party, I’d authored an article titled “5 Decisive Moves to Defeat Discouragement.”

To evict the vile villain, this Warrior Princess reached for her sword. I slashed away at shame with the sharp edge of Truth.

6 Sharp Truths to Shatter Shame
You have a Protector

God is a sheltering stronghold where you can stand safely.

“Be my protector and refuge, a stronghold where I can be safe! For you are my high ridge and my stronghold” (Psalm 71:3, NET).

You are already Rescued

God has unshackled you from sin and shame.

“Rescue me, O my God, from the hand of the wicked, from the grasp of the unjust and cruel man” (Psalm 71: 4, ESV).

Your God will never forsake You

God will honor His promises. He never abandons the helpless and hurting.

“All day long I’ll praise and honor You, O God, for all that you have done for me” (Psalm 71:8, TLB).

Your Salvation is Secure

God has covered you with grace and set you free from condemnation.

“I will tell about your justice, and all day long proclaim your salvation, though I cannot fathom its full extent” (Psalm 71:15, NET).

You are a Display Case for God’s Glory

Open your mouth and declare you are delivered. Watch shame disappear as you worship.

“O God, You have taught me from my youth, And I still declare Your wondrous works and miraculous deeds” (Psalm 71: 17, AMP).

You are Fully Restored

God has renewed your life and clothed you in His righteousness.

“You have allowed me to suffer much hardship, but you will restore me to life again and lift me up from the depths of the earth” (Psalm 71: 20, NLT).

Sheltered Under His Wings

This weekend, I rolled down my window at a red light and tried to speak God’s kindness to a homeless pregnant woman who was panhandling for money. I felt the crushing pain of her desperation in her bitter response.

I can’t stop thinking about her. As I offered her hope and healing in Jesus, she turned away in disgust.

Her deliverance is just one prayer away, but she is not ready to surrender.

Bible historians will tell you that a widow in Ruth’s day was in a very dangerous position and basically considered a homeless person.

A widow was a forlorn, defenseless little bird with no nest.

However, Ruth chose to sing a different tune. She looked to Jehovah God for her sustenance. Her resilient faith did not sway as she worked in the hot sun while every person in town watched her sweating out her new-found faith.

She never shook her fist at God. She never hid away from the world and sulked. Ruth perched her hopes on God’s faithfulness and never looked back.

If you are in dire circumstances right now, your Defender is near. He longs to shelter you under His wings…

4 Keys to Slaying Your Dragon

I slayed a dragon tonight.

Last week, our mentor charged us to step on the battlefield as warriors waging battle against the wicked foe seeking to destroy our hopes and dreams. As knights in the King’s service, we can defeat the dragon of resistance as we purpose to press forward into the fight.

I found the analogy inspiring. All week long, I’ve brandished my sword and boldly stepped up to the challenge. So far, I’ve conquered the behemoth of dirty laundry and the fiendish fire-breathing creature that continually cajoles me into pushing the snooze button.

Snooze button, you will not win the best of me. Laundry, prepare to be washed and folded by a Warrior Princess.

Tonight, I chopped the head off of the leviathan of lethargy always lulling me to lounge on the couch rather than exercise. I will sweat with sword raised high.

Maybe you have a dragon or two lurking around your territory that you’d like to take down. Here are some suggestions on how to suit up and slay your sneaky enemy.

4 Keys to Slaying Your Dragon

Stop Listening to the Soundtrack of Defeat

Replace negative and fearful thoughts full of doubt with the power-packed promises of God’s Word. Ingesting a healthy dose of Truth always trumps the enemy’s tall tales.

“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ…” (II Corinthians 10:3-5, ESV)

Ingesting a healthy dose of Truth always trumps the enemy’s tall tales.

Start Praying for Boldness

Fight on your knees. Invite the Holy Spirit to infuse you with resurrection power. Death and the dragon are no match for your Deliverer.

“And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to Your servants to continue to speak Your Word with all boldness, while you stretch out Your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of Your holy servant Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. (Acts 4:29-31)

Seek Out other Sword Fighters

Find your tribe. Tackling a fiend is best attempted when fierce warriors are standing beside you. Lone Rangers never last long on the field of battle.

“But you, my dear friends, must remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ predicted. They told you that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to satisfy their ungodly desires. These people are the ones who are creating divisions among you. They follow their natural instincts because they do not have God’s Spirit in them. But you, dear friends, must build each other up in your most holy faith, pray in the power of the Holy Spirit, and await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, who will bring you eternal life. In this way, you will keep yourselves safe in God’s love. And you must show mercy to those whose faith is wavering. Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. Show mercy to still others, but do so with great caution, hating the sins that contaminate their lives.” (Jude 1:17-23, NLT)

Sing and Shout a Victory Song

Nothing extinguishes a dragon’s fire more than praise. Put on worship music and make a joyful noise. At the end of each day, take a look back and record the ground you’ve gained as God fights your battles for you. Review the written record on dark days to remind you how far you’ve traveled. Remember that your enemy is already defeated, and he is on a very short leash.

“Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening. Suddenly, there was a massive earthquake, and the prison was shaken to its foundations. All the doors immediately flew open, and the chains of every prisoner fell off!” (Acts 16:24-25)

Don’t let the enemy destroy your dreams. Pick up your sword and defeat the dragon.

Don’t let the enemy destroy your dreams. Pick up your sword and defeat the dragon.

4 Ways to Speak Shalom

The conversation ended, and I felt hollow.

The words spoken sucked the joy right out of me and dried up my soul. I knew I should not engage in such a thorny conversation. But the poisonous seeds were quickly scattered, and I didn’t know how to stop them from taking root in the soil of my heart.

I opened up my Bible and exposed myself to the Light:

Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace and work to maintain it.

~ I Peter 3:11, NLT

I want my life to speak shalom and nourish the weary and wounded.

I want my life to speak shalom and nourish the weary and wounded.

In Never Unfriended, Lisa Jo Baker defines “shalom” as “caring about someone’s safety and soundness in body, welfare, prosperity, peace and contentment, friendship and good health…caring deeply about seeing conflict come to an end…passionately invested in seeking the well-being of others…living into the Great Commission to become a blessing to the people around us…”

Powerful, right?

I know I can’t speak peace without the help of the Peace Maker, so tonight I went digging deep into the Scriptures for His instructional help, and I found a passage where Paul shows us how to put this into practice.

4 Ways to Speak Shalom
Extend grace

Choose to bless, not browbeat. Speak kindness to those in your circle of influence. A sweet word is nourishing to the soul.

May God give you grace and peace. (I Thessalonians 1:1, NLT)

Express gratitude

Live like a noticer, not a nitpicker. Verbalize your appreciation for the constant contributions of those you rub shoulders with each day. Say a simple thank you to soothe a weary heart.

We always thank God for all of you and pray for you constantly. As we pray to our God and Father about you, we think of your faithful work, your loving deeds, and the enduring hope you have because of our Lord Jesus Christ. (vs. 2-3)

Emphasize good

Suit up as a cheerleader, not a condemner. Affirm the character of those journeying alongside of you. Stand up beside them in support of their bents and gifts.

We know, dear brothers and sisters, that God loves you and has chosen you to be his own people. For when we brought you the Good News, it was not only with words but also with power, for the Holy Spirit gave you full assurance that what we said was true. And you know of our concern for you from the way we lived when we were with you. (vs 4-5)

Encourage growth

Determine to promote, rather than poison. Applaud the courageous who fling fear aside to fulfill their callings. Celebrate the wonderful work  of redemption evidenced in resurrected lives.

So you received the message with joy from the Holy Spirit in spite of the severe suffering it brought you. In this way, you imitated both us and the Lord.  As a result, you have become an example to all the believers in Greece—throughout both Macedonia and Achaia. (vs 6-7)

Purpose to speak Shalom over your people.

I’m purposing to speak Shalom over my people.

Keep Hope Alive

On February 28, 1944, Corrie ten Boom and her family were arrested by the Gestapo in Holland for hiding Jewish refugees in their home. Their courageous effort to save lives from Nazi extermination led to their own incarceration in Ravensbruck. Stripped of their dignity and freedom, the sisters managed to smuggle a Bible into their flea-infested barracks and start a prayer meeting. Each night as they opened up the Word of life, they chose to take their eyes off the cruelty of man and look to the love of Christ. Their persevering faith in the midst of affliction pointed many lost souls to true salvation. Corrie learned: “There is no pit so deep that God’s love is not deeper still.”

The first two chapters of Lamentations describe the deep despair of God’s people when they were imprisoned by Babylon. Jeremiah weeps over the city which stands in shambles. But in Chapter 3, the Prophet purposefully shifts His perspective and begins to remember the mercy and compassion of God. He chooses to reflect on the faithfulness of God’s character rather than rehearse the futility of his circumstances. The city was in ruins, but God’s righteous reign still endured. Jeremiah challenges God’s people to persist in prayer and wait for God’s sure salvation.

Reflect on the faithfulness of God’s character rather than rehearse the futility of your circumstances

Click To Tweet

The word “wait” here is not a passive term. Waiting on God’s deliverance is a purposeful choice to look ahead with hopeful expectation and eagerness. Corrie ten Boom didn’t languish in inactivity as she waited. She moved forward trusting that God was providentially working through her afflictions to bring greater glory to Himself.

When we purpose to contemplate God’s mercy and not give in to misery, He births hope in our hearts even in the darkest of times. We can walk forward in full confidence that God will deliver us from captivity. God’s lovingkindness never leaves us. We must trust that He is working toward a complete restoration and will rescue us soon.

If you are in a valley season right now, don’t give in to complacency. Keep hope alive in your heart by focusing on the faithfulness of your God. He always keeps His promises.

10 Power-Packed Promises to Plug You into God’s Peace

A couple of years ago, Bruce and I were getting ready for bed when I noticed a bright light flooding through our bedroom window. My internal radar sounded an alarm as the flash flowed toward our backyard.

“Someone is out there!” I squealed. My sleepy-faced husband sat up in bed, parted the blinds, and scanned the terrain.

“It’s just the cops with a couple of dogs and flashlights,” he explained as he plopped back down under the covers.

“Aren’t you going out there?” I cried.

“Nah, I’m sure they are just looking for a robbery suspect that may have jumped into the lake. We’ll probably hear about it on the news in the morning.” I wanted him to jump out of bed, find a big bat, and head outside to defend our territory. Instead, he just rolled over, slurred a sluggish, “Good Night,” and started snoring away.

I lay in bed shaking for an hour. I wondered if all the doors were actually locked. I prayed the blood of Christ over every window and doorway in my home. I looked out the window nervously at least a million times.

My husband slept peacefully on through it all. In the morning, the sun shone brightly, and our house still stood. No one came to huff and puff and blow it down. The only evidence of distress was the dark circles under my distraught eyes.

I can’t tell you how many nights I’ve laid in bed flooded with fear and worry. I’ve imagined thousands of catastrophes and mentally written my own obituary. Rather than praying through my fears and pressing into the presence of Christ, I allow my thoughts to escalate into terror and trembling.

In Matthew 8, Jesus leads His disciples on a boat trip that sails straight into a storm. As the wind and waves begin to bash against the bulwark, the seasoned sailors on board forget every past experience at sea and panic.

Jesus is sleeping soundly through the turmoil. When frenzy on board awakens him, His placid response speaks of a peace that rises above squall:

“Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?”

Christ is calm because He knows who rules the whirlwind. And, I can rest because I know the Savior.

Jesus is our peace in the midst of the storm. Rather than living lives permeated with persistent fear, we can tack on to His strong arm and sail on with tranquility through the most brackish sea.

Jesus is our peace in the midst of the storm.
