Trembling Trust

I sat in the sanctuary trembling.

The man standing at the pulpit reading the Word was not my pastor. My pastor had fallen into sin, and now all around me people wept. As a church family, we collectively lifted our broken hearts to our holy God and held fast to His unchanging promises on a day when the enemy tried to undo us.

Man may fail me, but God is faithful.

When we do not fear God, we open up our lives to destruction. Fear of man is wrong, but it is healthy to tremble in the presence of a holy God.

To fear God means to
seek His wisdom because we acknowledge our own foolishness apart from His Truth

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” (Proverbs 9:10, ESV).

exalt Him with a humble heart in awe of His goodness and glory

“The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” (Proverbs 15:33)

follow His commands wholeheartedly out of a sincere desire to please Him above all else

“Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” (Psalm 34:11-14)

When we choose to fear God, we…

5 Simple Ways a Woman Can Make a Monumental Difference

I must confess that right now I have a huge pile of laundry to conquer and a sink full of dishes. The charge to shine brightly and carry Jesus to the lost in this dark world seems beyond my capability. I can’t make time to wash my hair most weeks. How am I supposed to “go into the world” and “make disciples” when I can’t even get to the grocery store to make dinner for my family?

I am just an ordinary woman. Being a world changer on fire for Jesus seems like an impossible challenge most days.

How can I have a missionary heart in the midst of my daily life? Reading through the Bible, I’ve found inspiration from the lives of 5 women who made a monumental difference.

Ordinary acts of obedience can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of others.

5 Ways a Woman Can Make a Monumental Difference
She can pray

Oswald Chambers said, “Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work.” I can present the names of my neighbors to the One who transforms lives. Like a modern-day Esther, I am appointed to pray and fast and walk through whatever doors God may open for me to speak the Truth in love.

She can help

God loves to surprise us. If we are in tune with Him, He will present opportunities for us to meet needs and point people toward redemption. Just look at the servant girl in II Kings 5. Naaman needed healing, and she knew a healer. “Let me tell you about Elisha,” she said. Naaman was “all ears.” Right now, someone in your circle of influence needs help. If you respond, you might just help them find healing from their sin as well as help in a time of need.

She can encourage and support

Be a good friend who invests in others. Choose to be fully present, listen, and share your story like Priscilla in the New Testament. The church actually met in her home, and she partnered with her husband to encourage Paul, Apollos, and whoever God brought into her path. (I Corinthians 16:19; Acts 18:26)

She can invite others in

Do you know how to bake a cake? Can you make a pot of coffee? Maybe God wants you to use the gift of hospitality to encourage a hurting family and share the Good News. Lydia did. In Acts 16, we see her inviting people to her home as a springboard to inviting them to Christ.

She can serve

In Acts 9, Paul introduces us to Dorcas, an ordinary woman whose heart beat with compassion for the needy. Like Dorcas, we are called to love the least of these. We don’t need a seminary degree or a huge bank account to accomplish this mission. All we have to do is show up and be willing to get our hands dirty in the name of Jesus. We are called to be His hands and feet in this broken world.

You can choose to be a world changer right now. Pray, help, encourage, invite others in, and serve.

Taking one simple step of faith today can create a monumental difference tomorrow.

How to Find Strength in the All-Powerful Name of Jesus

The events of this week hang heavy on my heart. As I watch the news coverage, I wish I could just press a permanent pause button on the wickedness in this world.

Jesus, help us!

This simple prayer was the cry of my heart this week. My soul longed for Jesus to come down and make it all better.

When life makes no sense, the only solution is to seek the One who suffered more than I will ever understand to save this world from sin.

Jesus knows how to turn things around and transform darkness into light.

When sin is great, Christ’s love is greater. His name speaks life and peace louder than any other voice.

The name of Jesus is All Powerful.

This week I have found comfort in 5 names of my death-defeating Savior.

How Find Strength in the Name of Jesus
Redeemer

Jesus is a rescuer, and He wars for us when we are in need of ransom. He longs to flood all the dark spaces of our lives with His light and love. (Job 19:25, Isaiah 59:20; Colossians 1:13-14)

Cornerstone

No matter how unstable this world gets, Jesus is a bedrock foundation under our feet. We stand secure in Christ. (Psalm 118:22, I Peter 2:4-8)

Prince of Peace

In the midst of chaos, Jesus speaks peace over our lives. As we press into His presence, He will calm the storm within us as the battle rages without. (Isaiah 9:6; Ephesians 2:14)

Immanuel

God is with us. He is intimately involved in every aspect of our lives. The Spirit of the Resurrected Christ indwells us and is at work. His wonderful plan for us cannot be thwarted by wicked schemes. (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23)

Faithful and True

Jesus will keep His promises. He is a warrior who fights for us and will fully defeat all wickedness one glorious day. (Psalm 33:4; Revelation 19:11)

As we talk with our neighbors and co-workers about difficult events during dark times, let’s remember to bring Jesus into the conversation. Let’s tell them about the Savior who embodies the hope and help they are desperately seeking.

Find strength by fixing your thoughts on the all-powerful name of Jesus.

The 4 Big Building Blocks of an Indestructible Home

We sat in the driveway waiting.

I’d spent the day scrubbing my kitchen floor and ran out of time to change clothes before our appointment. I’d jumped into Bruce’s truck wearing my ripped jeans and an old T shirt that reeked of Clorox Cleanup Spray. Not my best look.

“I like it from the outside,” I smiled at Bruce. We’d looked at so many houses. Not one seemed to fit, and we were running out of time.

“The side yard is nice, and green is your favorite color.” (God is all about the details.)

Maybe this is the one.

“You think it comes with the lawn guy?” Bruce joked. I laughed as we watched a guy move up and down in straight lines at a lightning pace.

“You’d never let anyone else mow the lawn,” I retorted as I leaned forward to get a better look. “He kind of looks like Pastor Jorge from church. Doesn’t he?”

The lawn guy finished his job and moved from the side yard across the front lawn and into the garage of the house next door.

“That definitely was Pastor Jorge,” I nodded with conviction. “This house comes with a holy neighbor.”

Just then the realtor pulled up, and we got to walk across the threshold of the mysterious green house with the well manicured lawn.

I floated through every room and found my sweet spot. I stood in the family room looking out a big window that overlooked a backyard with a water view.

“It’s going to go fast,” the realtor said.

“Tell me where to sign,” I  replied as I pulled out my checkbook.

After many months of searching, the Lord had given us our house. In 60 days, we’d stand in front of the church and commit to building a forever home together as man and wife.

I’d need more than a realtor and a checkbook for that.

Building a home is a work of the Spirit. I can decorate with cinammon candles and fluffy throw pillows, but still only live in a shell of a house.

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain…

Psalm 127:1, ESV

Bruce and I both grew up in homesteads where hurts, bad habits, and hangups had created a hellish atmosphere. On our own, we had no idea how construct a stable home.

Almost nine years ago, two broken people decided to dedicate their 4 walls to the Lord.  Every morning, we stand face to face across the kitchen island, hold hands, and pray for God’s wisdom to show us the way.

Maybe like me, your childhood home was characterized by chaos.

Perhaps you’re standing in a house of shattered dreams right now.

You can transform the atmosphere in your home by building with 4 concrete elements.

The 4 Big Building Blocks of an Indestructible Home
Love

Frame your home with three words: I love you.

“Hatred stirs up conflict, but love covers over all wrongs.” (Proverbs 10:12, NIV)

Humility

Empty out pride and pour out a steady stream of this phrase: You come first.

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:1-2)

Forgiveness

Smooth out the flaws by saying: I am sorry.

“Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. (Colossians 3:13, NLT)

Giving

Guard your groundwork by covering it with grace: I can help.

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:38, NIV)

Start your day for the next 7 mornings asking asking the Master Builder to help you build your home on a solid foundation of Truth.

7 Powerful Prayers to Secure Your Home from Harm

What else are you mad about?

We sat knee to knee and stared into each other’s baby blues while we held hands. Our marriage coach hovered near by as we engaged in an activity titled “Taking Out the Trash.”

I took a deep breath and rattled off my list of offenses.

What else are you mad about?

I dug deeper and spoke from the deep dark pit in my stomach where bitter things fester. Bruce handed me a piece of tissue as the tears started to freely fall.

What else are you mad about?

The coach told him to keep asking the same question until I ran out of things to say.

I had plenty to say.

I’m angry that our baby died.

There. I said it. I am mad that I am not a mom. That’s as trashy as it gets.

I handed Bruce a box of tissue. Maybe I shouldn’t have signed us up for a marriage conference on the same weekend when Facebook reminds me I had a miscarriage.

I spent 20 minutes in a conference hall regurgitating all of my disappointments. Honestly, I wish I’d just stayed home in my PJ’s instead. Dealing with your brokenness is exhausting.

Life is incredibly painful sometimes.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve heard from many of you — the beautifully broken people who read this blog. I’ve cried over emails, and I’ve prayed for you to know God is fighting for you. You’ve got trash, too.

You are mad because of the chaos in your homes.

You are sad because people are hurtful and misjudge your motives.

You are scared nothing will change, and you’ll end up empty handed with unanswered prayers.

You wish you could change your circumstances and find hope in the midst of your pain. If only life were different…

Friend, I want to remind you of what God whispered to me when I got home from the conference and picked up my Bible:

You are secure in Christ. No weapon formed against you shall prosper.  The suffering you experiencing today is but a shadow, and God’s redemption is at work. (I John 5:13 & 18Isaiah 54:17, Colossians 1:13-14 & 27).

The enemy wants you to spend all your time wallowing the mire, but God has rescued you from the pit and given you a firm place to stand. (Psalm 40:2)

Stinky sentiment can’t smell up your house if you don’t stuff it. I want to open up my home to the sweet aroma of the Spirit and take out the trash.  So instead of inhaling the stench of brokenness and sin, I’ve decided to freshen up my home and heart by praying big for my family for the next 7 days.  Want to join me?

7 Scriptural Prayers to Secure Your Home:
Lord, do a beautiful work in us and build a solid foundation of wisdom.

“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” (Proverbs 24:3-4)

Lord, help us cover one another with Your love even when it’s hard.

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (I Peter 4:8)

Lord, teach us to protect one another and persevere with hope.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” (I Corinthians 13:4-8)

Lord, firmly establish our family in faith and guard us against the enemy.

“The Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.” (II Thessalonians 3:3)

Lord, strengthen our hearts and provide us with abundant peace.

“Extol the LORD, Jerusalem; praise your God, Zion. He strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses your people within you. He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.” (Psalm 147:12-14)

Lord, may Your Truth infuse our lives so that nothing keeps us from walking in full freedom.

“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Lord, give us discernment during difficult times and draw us closer to you each day.

“Therefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them. You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” (Psalm 32:6-8)

How to Thrive in a Topsy-Turvy World

Last week, I sat at a table with 9 strangers, yet I felt loved, accepted, and understood.

Gathering with women to study the Word of  God is like covering yourself with a warm blanket in a blizzard. All around you the icy blast of the storm rages, but inside you are safe. You are secure. You are sheltered.

I’d forgotten how the Holy Spirit embraces you as you look another woman in the eye and say “Me, too.” I need Jesus.

The sister seated to my right spoke with quiet confidence about how she found strength to step forward during a difficult season by seeking wisdom in Scripture. She picked up a pen and turned God’s promises into prayers, which she scribbled out on the pages of a notebook she’d purchased at the dollar store.

“You can’t find firm footing in a swamp, but life rooted in God stands firm.” (Proverbs 12:3, MSG)

We opened our Bibles to Matthew 13 and listened to a lesson on sowing and reaping. The teacher encouraged us to examine the condition of our hearts:

Is my heart hardened to God’s Word because of heartbreak and disappointment?
Is my heart barren from a shallow life full of busy distractions?
Is my heart cluttered by cares that consume me with worry and anxiety?

As I looked at the woman with her dollar store notebook, I thought I want what she has. She is thriving in this topsy-turvy world.

How’s your heart, friend? Maybe like me you suddenly feel like a trip to the dollar store might just help you save your life. We need to write His Word on our hearts.

How to Thrive in a Topsy-Turvy World
Tend to Your Heart

Plow out bitterness, selfishness, and ingratitude. Plant love, joy, and peace.

“Sow with a view to righteousness, Reap in accordance with kindness; Break up your fallow ground, For it is time to seek the Lord Until He comes to rain righteousness on you.” (Hosea 10:12, NASB)

Take time to Hydrate

Whatever you plant won’t thrive without the water of the Word applied to your heart every day. Soak in Scripture.

“The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.” (Isaiah 58:11, NLT)

Tackle the thorny hedges

A hurried life twisted with worry and doubt will topple over if you don’t deal with what’s troubling you. The enemy wants to strangle your faith and suffocate your joy. You need to uproot prickly anxious thoughts.  Let the light of His love fill up every place the enemy has tried to plant fear.

“…let us strip off and throw aside every encumbrance, unnecessary weight, and that sin which so readily, deftly, and cleverly clings to and entangles us…” (Hebrews 12:1, AMPC)

This year, I want to stop neglecting my heart and pray:

Lord, plow deep in me.

Planting Truth in our Hearts

Every Tuesday evening for 30 weeks, I spent 3 hours in a classroom discussing family life skills with a group of women and a trained marriage and family counselor. On one memorable evening, our teacher stood at the front and re-defined anger for me:

Anger is a false front – a signpost for another underlying root emotion. We use anger to cover up our shame, inadequacy, and pain.

Really? I grew up in a home where angry outbursts were the norm. In order to be heard, you simply elevated your voice and spoke with more passion. This was how we communicated. Now as an adult, I needed to re-learn how to engage in discussion without verbally sparring if I wanted to have a peaceful home. I needed to remove the roots of bitterness wrapped around my selfish heart.

What I learned through wise counsel matches perfectly with the truths shared in the book of James. Self-righteous anger is never healthy. We will never win the war by using our words as a weapon.

The Apostle James lived in a time where opposing parties were passionate about opinions, and he offered practical help to the early church regarding how to work through conflicts. The way of the world is to demand our own way, but in this passage we discover God’s equation for healthy communication…

We met for prayer as a “family” at 11:50 AM on Tuesday. We stood behind the reception desk at work and faced each other in a tight knit circle. I had grabbed a notepad and was writing down each request — because I have a terrible memory, and sometimes they ask me to pray.

But today, the young bearded guy from Admissions was going to lead us to the throne. Right before we bowed our heads and closed our eyes, he looked over at me and asked, “How about you, Lyli? You have any prayer requests?”

I looked at him — standing there sporting a spiffy shirt and tie. He had his toothbrush and a tube of paste tucked into this back pocket — because he was leaving for a dentist appointment in an hour and wanted to make sure he remembered to brush.

He’s so young, I thought. (I always think that when he is in the room).

Listen kid, I have more prayer requests than you have time. The dentist is waiting. (This is what I wanted to say.)

I also wanted to say, listen kid, I’ve been on my knees for a few things since before you were born. Because that’s how long I’ve waited for my miracle.

I’ve prayed long and persevered longer than Angel in Admissions has lived.

Every morning for over 3 decades, I’ve asked God for one thing. I’ve cried. I’ve yelled. I’ve groaned. And some days I’ve doubted.

Because when you’re waiting for a mountain to move, and all you see is its looming dark shadow grow larger, it’s easy to get discouraged.

I am guessing I am not alone in the waiting room of life. Maybe like me, you are hoping and praying for God to do the impossible in your problematic situation. Perhaps you have a pesky relative who breaks your heart and needs redemption? I am imagining you’ve dreamed for a change, an open door, a fresh wind of the Spirit to blow through and breathe life into the brokenness.

Sister, I want to remind you — You are not alone in the waiting.

How to Wait Well for Your Breakthrough Miracle
Remember God’s Character

Although your situation has not changed, neither has your God. He is faithful and true. He always keeps His promises.

“All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.” (Psalm 25:10, ESV)

Rest in God’s Strength

You can lift that weight crushing your heart right up to God. Let Him carry the load. You are not meant to solve this problem, just pray about it.

“Cast your burden on the Lord releasing the weight of it and He will sustain you; He will never allow the consistently righteous to be moved — made to slip, fall, or fail.” (Psalm 55:22, AMPC)

Reflect on God’s Track Record

I am guessing God has shown up strong for you in the past more than once. Make a list of every time He has and keep it handy to remind you He is your present help. Meditate on the cross on days when it’s hard. Remind yourself He is the Resurrection and the Life.

“But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me.” (Psalm 13:5-6, NIV)

Release your Rights

At the end of the day, you don’t get to tell God how to run the world. He isn’t required to answer your requests on your timetable or with your fabulous master plan for making things better. (I am preaching to myself here.) Lay your request on the altar and choose to worship God come what may.

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.” (Psalm 37:5-6, NIV)

Reach Toward Community

When you are in the waiting room, phone a friend. (This is not just a good strategy for game shows.). Reach out to others and ask them to pray for your mountain to move. Confess you need a little encouragement and be willing to receive it. (You don’t have to pretend to be Mother Teresa. You can say, “I am struggling with doubt. Pray for me.”)

One generation will declare Your works to the next and will proclaim Your mighty acts. I will speak of Your splendor and glorious majesty and Your wonderful works. They will proclaim the power of Your awe-inspiring acts, and I will declare Your greatness. They will give a testimony of Your great goodness and will joyfully sing of Your righteousness.” (Psalm 145:5-7, HCSB)

Rejoice in What’s to Come

God is writing a spectacular story with your life. You may be in the thick of the conflict right now, but your happy ending is coming. Keep heaven in view and watch for His handiwork in your ordinary day. He will show up in small ways to remind you He is still at work.

“The Lord is with me; He is my Helper. I look in triumph on my enemies.” (Psalm 118:7, NIV)

This year, I want to stop worrying about the “what ifs” and walk forward consistently praying:

Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.

As we #PrayBig and wait for the Lord, He is at work. He is weaving together a beautiful tapestry with every thread of your life. Right now, you may not see the connections, and your life may appear to be in tatters, but He sees the masterpiece you cannot.

One day, your mountain is going to move. And the view is going to be spectacular. He is still a God of miracles. Yours is coming.

On Tuesday afternoon, after our family prayer meeting at work, I logged on to Facebook to check in with my girls. I lead an online Bible study, and right now we are studying James. One sweet sister expressed her discouragement regarding an ongoing trial in her family.  James 1:6 hit her hard:

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

Although this is an online Bible study, I knew the woman and the intimate details of her life well. We’ve prayed together for her mountain on many an occasion. She’s a young mom, and I pictured her typing away at her computer with two toddlers climbing all over her.

My friend shared her emotions — raw and unfiltered, and the response of the other women in the group made me get a little weepy. Two wise women responded to share a wealth of their experience. Both are grandmas — who’ve “been there, done that,” but they didn’t share pat answers. They pressed in and encouraged her to persevere.

Listen, we aren’t meant to fight this battle on our own. If you need encouragement, I want to invite you to join our Pray Big Facebook group.

Keep praying, sisters.  When you can’t speak, just groan. You can keep it simple.

Oh and by the way, on Tuesday morning before I left for work, I read these words during my quiet time: Ask and it will be given to you, seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  (God knew I’d need the reminder.)

Every prayer is a sentence added to your miracle story.

What You Need to Know When Your Motives are Misjudged

Sometimes I wonder if God only gave me 5 toes because He knew I’d constantly insert my foot in my mouth.

My mouth is always getting me in trouble — even when I am on my best behavior.

More than once over the last few weeks, I’ve said, “That’s not what I meant” and shaken my head in disbelief as someone misjudged my motives.

Why can’t we give one another the benefit of the doubt?

Why can’t we assume the best instead of imagine the worst?

Why are people so obstinate and easily offended?

Sigh.

Some days there is just not enough chocolate to soothe my crushed soul.

Maybe you can relate? If you’re bruised from a verbal bashing, I want to encourage you. God sees you. He understands your pain. Remember Christ came to rescue mankind, but faced rancor and ridicule instead.

When Your Motives are Misjudged Remember:
Truth is a shield to thwart temptation.

The firm foundation of God’s promises is unshakeable ground. Fear will flee as you stand on God’s promises.

“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.” (I Peter 2:22, NIV)

Calm speaks louder than cynicism.

Silence is the best response to sarcasm. Pray for wise words laced with grace.

“When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats…”

Surrender opens the door to salvation.

You can depend on your Savior to show up and stand in the gap for you every time. He is always your Advocate.

“…Instead, He entrusted himself to Him who judges justly.” (I Peter 2:23b)

This year, I want to stop fearing what people might say and find courage to pray:

Lord, have Your way in me.

As we stand on the promises in the quiet with surrendered hearts, our Defender will make a way for us. He is mightier than manipulative men.
