When You Think You’re Stuck Between Yesterday and Tomorrow
I have spent the last 3 months searching for a new calendar to help me stay organized and plan. Merging my life with a new agenda is a major commitment, and I didn’t want to rush to the altar with my money in hand. I wanted to make sure I chose the perfect planner as my partner to set me up for success.
My spiral-bound daily docket is my brain on paper. Without a visual layout of my day, I squander my time and miss essential deadlines.
I was still in the midst of my calendar quest last month when I attended a ministry meeting hosted by my friend Joannie. This gal is super-model gorgeous, speaks with grace, and seems incredibly put together at all times. I want to be her when I grow up.
But, that morning, I learned her life can be as chaotic and messed up as mine. Yep, she is human. In fact, she is one of my people. She gets my crazy. I knew this the moment she shared her frustration about forgetting to bring her calendar to the meeting.
“He wants me to commit to an event, but I somehow managed to misplace my calendar.” Joannie’s husband would have to wait because she’d left her brain at home. (Bruce and I have conversations just like this weekly. He will ask me if we have any free time over the next week, and I will ask him to go grab my planner. I need to see what’s already laid out on our agenda. If we are not at home, he is out of luck.)
“I need to see my squares.” Joannie explained. The 31 squares that designate each day the next month were carefully cultivated by her calendar. I nodded my head in agreement. The monthly spread in my planner is my strategic battle plan.
But then she paused and said something incredibly profound. “Lately, I realized I’ve spent way too much time reaching back and trying to fix the squares that have already slipped by. And, I am also looking forward to what is looming ahead with fear. But my feet are only planted on one square, and today is where I need to place all my attention.”
My friend is determined to stay in her square and steward it well. Instead of worrying about tomorrow, she wants to lift her hands in worship and see God’s wonder right where she is standing.
I realized I miss so much of God’s work in my life because I am not fully tending to my present square. I’m trying to put my feet in more than one place, and God didn’t design me for that duty. Only He transcends time and transforms seasons.
Maybe like me and my friend Joannie you are straddled between yesterday and tomorrow and feeling stuck. Here’s the thing: you can’t move forward unless your feet are firmly positioned in one place.
3 Steps to Take When You’re Stuck Between Yesterday and Tomorrow
Say Goodbye to Yesterday’s Disappointment
You cannot change events that have already transpired, but you can trust God will bring restoration and make all things new one day. His redemption is still at work, so you can rest because He is on the throne. Trust God with your story and stop trying to fix it.
“Forget about what’s happened; don’t keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand-new. It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it? There it is! I’m making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands.” (Isaiah 43:18-19, MSG)
Stop Catastrophizing Your Future
The enemy of your soul likes to plant lies in your heart and mind so that he can keep you paralyzed by fear. Don’t let him rent space in your head. When a crazy thought tries to take root in your thinking, uproot it and replace it with the Truth. God has thoughts of peace toward you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you.
“So do not consume yourselves with questions: What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? Outsiders make themselves frantic over such questions; they don’t realize that your heavenly Father knows exactly what you need. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and then all these things will be given to you too. So do not worry about tomorrow. Let tomorrow worry about itself. Living faithfully is a large enough task for today.” (Matthew 6:31-34, VOICE)
Seize the Moment
Today is a gift, and you only get to experience it once. Don’t waste a single second. Make memories and make much of Jesus with your life.
“Live life, then, with a due sense of responsibility, not as men who do not know the meaning and purpose of life but as those who do. Make the best use of your time, despite all the difficulties of these days. Don’t be vague but firmly grasp what you know to be the will of God.” (Ephesians 5:16-17, Phillips)
Are you ready to stop worrying about the past and freaking out about the future? To help you quiet the crazy voices in your head and steward today well, I’ve created a worksheet with 3 coaching questions to help you work through mental roadblocks and get unstuck. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.
When we surrender the past and stop worrying about the future, we will embrace full freedom in Christ and experience His fullness of joy right where we stand today. We will walk lighter and lean on God’s strength to direct our day moment by moment. As we move forward in faith, people will probably notice a new spring in our step, and we can point to Jesus and praise the One who delights in directing our path.
If you feel stuck, stop straddling your feet between two seasons and stand on today’s square.

How to Finally Overcome Decision Fatigue
I don’t like having too many choices. I guess I suffer from decision fatigue.
Bruce and I tend to eat at the same 3 or 4 restaurants, and I always order the same thing. When he asks me what I want to watch on TV, I usually let him pick the show.
More than once over the last month, I’ve said, “I can’t think about that now” when my man has asked me to determine our next step.
Right now, I have a huge life decision hanging over my head, and I just want to hide under the covers. I am hoping it will go away. (Maybe Jesus will return and rescue me from all this uncertainty!)
I hate having to choose a path. What if I pick the wrong course of action? What if I go one way, but God wanted me to head in a completely opposite direction?
This is my one life. I don’t get a do-over. I don’t want to mess this up.
So, I do nothing. I sit on the couch and scroll through Facebook instead of figuring out my life.
Is there a cure for this malady? Do you suffer from decision fatigue, too?
Maybe right now you are wondering what your next right step is, but you are paralyzed by anxiety and doubt
because you might get it wrong,
because your choice won’t make everyone happy, and you hate conflict.
because you aren’t sure you have what it takes to move forward.
because you wish you knew the outcome and could foresee all the obstacles.
because you dislike change.
Over the last few weeks, I’ve worked through my fear a bit, and I have picked up a few tips to help me make a wise decision — instead of living consumed by worry. Just in case you are feeling stuck, I thought I’d share what I’ve learned to help you make your own.
5 Tips to Help You Overcome Decision Fatigue
Pray about your priorities
Start by making a list of your roles and responsibilities, and then pray about what your primary priorities should be. Try to narrow down your list to under eight, so you are not focused on too many things. Number these items in order of importance, and use your priorities as a filter whenever you are faced with a decision.
“The lovers of God who chase after righteousness will find all their dreams come true: an abundant life drenched with favor and a fountain that overflows with satisfaction.” (Proverbs 21:21, TPT)
Put First Things First
God should be number one on your priority list, and His kingdom purposes should color everything you do. Asking yourself how your decision will advance His Divine agenda is the first place to start. Will this decision draw you closer to God? Will this decision help you point other people to God? Is this decision the best use of the spiritual gifts God has given you?
“Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met.” (Matthew 6:33, MSG)
Pull Back from the Noise
Unplugging from social media and quieting your soul will help you better determine your next course of action. Set aside some time in your day to fast and sit in silence before God. Ask Him to speak to you as you read His Word. Make sure you write down anything that stirs your heart in a journal. A few weeks down the road, you may see a pattern emerge from what you have written when you look back at your words.
“You will keep in perfect and constant peace the one whose mind is steadfast—that is, committed and focused on You—in both inclination and character, Because he trusts and takes refuge in You with hope and confident expectation.” (Isaiah 26:3, AMP)
Purchase this Helpful Resource
I just finished reading a fabulous new book that is like free coaching for those with chronic decision fatigue. The Next Right Thing written by Emily P. Freeman helps you discern what the best course of action is and decide what your first steps should be. If you are trying to figure out “what’s next,” this book is your new best friend.
“If you solicit good advice, then your plans will succeed. So don’t charge into battle without wisdom, for wars are won by skillful strategy.” (Proverbs 20:8, TPT)
Purpose to Stay on Mission
Writing out your passion and praying over it daily will help mobilize you to live on mission for God’s glory with intentional purpose. You will step into your day with greater focus and clarity. Keep in mind how Jesus modeled this for us in the Gospels:
“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” (Luke 19:10, NIV)
Having a clear focus helps you to say no to shiny things that will distract you from stepping into the supernatural work God wants to do in and through your life. Use your mission statement to help you eliminate diversions that may deter you from heading in the direction God has designed for your life.
Are you ready to create your own mission statement? To help you get started, I’ve created two great resources for you: The “My Mission Statement” worksheet will walk you through the steps to creating a clear focus for your year. Plus, I also provided a list of 10 mission-minded Scriptures for you to print out and pray over this week for inspiration. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.
You can push past fear and make prayerful decisions when you have focused your life on God’s priorities. As you start putting feet to your faith, people will begin to notice your commitment to His agenda, and they will ask you to help them learn how to align their own lives to God’s grander purposes. We can partner with God and help other people move forward instead of feeling paralyzed by doubt.
What are you waiting for? God has big plans for you.
Craft a mission statement and start conquering decision fatigue.

I am starting a podcast this summer. Yay! Each week, I will be interviewing an author and chatting about how we can fuel our faith as we walk through the fire.
As you know, I last year I transitioned out of education into full-time writing and speaking. It’s incredibly rewarding work, but I am currently paying my dues and not making much income at all.
This week, I launched a new community on Patreon so that people could sign up to partner with me to launch this podcast.
There are 3 tiers to sign up for with different perks at each level. It’s a monthly commitment of $5, $10, or $20 to help cover the costs of the blog and podcast. I am sharing it with you — my people who’ve cheered me on and celebrated this new thing God is doing in my life.
I’d love for you to take a peek at my Patreon page and then pray for me. If you can’t sign up to support this project, I totally understand. But, I’d love for you to pray for God’s favor on this podcast and for my book proposal, which will be going to 2 agents this coming week.

When You are Refined by Transitions
Desperately we waited for answers as we sat by the hospital bed where my four-year old little girl was strapped down so she wouldn’t yank out her breathing tube. She was having seizures, hallucinations and ultimately had a blood plasma transfer. During the three weeks we were in the ICU of Children’s hospital, I experienced dramatic highs and lows of seeing God comfort and care for us through the support of the body of Christ. I felt deep wrenching pain when my daughter didn’t recognize me and hallucinated I was someone else trying to get her as she cried out for me.
Transitions and the unexpected have a way about exposing what we really believe about God. They open up our eyes to places of our hearts and minds we didn’t even know were there.
Two of our other kids, who we adopted at birth and are biological brothers, we’ve come to understand in the course of the last year have severe mental illness. Their explosive anger comes as quickly as turning on a faucet and over minor things like what is for dinner. Dealing with their daily explosions made the hospital visit feel like a retreat. Our life has been a constant place of transition trying to figure out and get each kid the help they need.
The boys constant irritability and opposition has brought us to a place of desperation for Jesus I didn’t know was possible. And exposed deep down doubts about God that never would have been exposed if all this didn’t happen. The cumulation of the boys and my little girl in the hospital brought thoughts to my mind like, “Is God powerless?” “Is He weak?” It has brought lies out of darkness and into the light. And when things are in the light they can be exposed for what they are, lies, rather than grow pungent in darkness.
What we believe about God is the most important thing about us and effects everything we think, say and do. Just as a crucible heats metals with intense heat to create something new and the smelter applies heat to extract out base metal and burn away impurities, the Lord uses intense transitions to purify our hearts and minds — to extinguish lies we believe about Him. “The crucible for silver and a smelter for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.” (Prov. 17:3)
Maybe your transition didn’t come in an ER room or through mental illness but is still all too real. Perhaps your unexpected has brought thoughts about God to your mind you have never thought before. The propensity to believe things not true about God has always been there, but opportunity to believe it was not. God cares and loves us enough to expose the parts of us that will hurt us and others. Perhaps your situation is the means God wants to use to bring the refinement, to root out the lies you believe about Him. Perhaps what you believe about Him is so important that He would allow the frustration of transition to expose lies as He did me.
Though God is allowing changes we never intended, we can know that nothing in his plan will ultimately harm us, and everything in his plan will ultimately be good (Romans 8:28), His grace will always be sufficient (2 Cor. 12:9) and the One who examines the thoughts and emotions is a righteous God. (Ps 7:9)
As we face changes, we need to cling to the truth about who God is. He is an anchor big enough and strong enough to hold our souls in the midst of life’s storms. Some changes will feel like a tiny ripple, and others feel like a ten-foot wave. But no matter what changes we face, we need not fear, hide or despair. Our rock and anchor will help us through every step. He tells us to, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)
So when change seems to smack you in the face, fix your eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of your faith. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross and sat down at the right hand of God.
When your circumstances expose lies you believe about God, consider it a gift because the lie loses its power.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Rom. 15:13)
When your circumstances expose lies you believe about God, consider it a gift because the lie loses its power.

The Refined Series
Fire refines. First God, breaks our pride into tiny pieces. Then, He melts away our impurities in a crucible of affliction. Every fleck of fleshy fluff rises to the surface and is removed until we reveal His image.
This year, I want to stop fearing the fire and pray:
Lord, refine me through the flame.
For 2018, I asked God to give me a word to guide my year, and He whispered the word “Refine.” For 10 months, Bruce and I have been walking through the fire and trying to not resist the refining work He is doing in us.
I am a very slow learner, and recently it occurred to me I should step aside and create more space to listen and learn during this season. I long to sit down for a heart-to-heart chat with a wise friend who will remind me the fire has a grander purpose. Thankfully, I am blessed to know several women who’ve walked through the fire and emerged beautifully refined, and I’ve invited them to share their story here with the Wildfire Faith Community once a month.
God has promised that the fire will not consume us, but transform us.

When You Need to Break Up with Busy
I’ve decided to break up with busy.
My schedule will not longer be the boss of me. I am going to learn to say no to distractions and time suckers to create a little more breathing room.
Instead of rushing out to meet my day, I want to slow down and really listen for the still small voice of Jesus.
Dirty dishes, laundry, and the email monster will not lure me away from lingering in my quiet time chair with my Bible in my lap.
I am determined.
I want be be best friends with Jesus, not my to-do list.
May the crazy voices in my head be silent so that I can hear His voice.
Less worry. More worship, please.
There just never seems to be enough time in my day to get everything done, so I am going to give up on checking chores off first. Let the dust bunnies run amok around the whole house as long as my whole spirit is in tune with my God.
Am I the only one who can’t seem to get a grip on all that I have to do?
If I have a clean house, my Bible is collecting dust. The sink is empty of dirty dishes, but my soul is somehow dry and barren.
I am hoping this is not just a Lyli thing. Is busy bossing you around at a your house, too?
Maybe like me, your life is crammed full of activity, and you just wish you could really slow down and rediscover the joy in your day.
If you are battling overly busy woman syndrome, I want to encourage you to put 3 very important items on your to-do list that will make a marked difference in your week.
3 Ways to Break Up with Busy
Relax Your Body
Your body needs rest. Setting aside time to recharge your weary bones must be on your to-do list. Slowing down, exercising, and sleeping are all essential to your well being.
Action Steps:
Take a nap.
Sit outside and breathe deeply.
Indulge in a bubble bath.
“God takes the side of the helpless; when I was at the end of my rope, He saved me. I said to myself, ‘Relax and rest. God has showered you with blessings. Soul, you’ve been rescued from death; Eye, you’ve been rescued from tears. And you, Foot, were kept from stumbling.’ I’m striding in the presence of God, alive in the land of the living!” (Psalm 116:6-9, MSG)
Refresh Your Spirit
Have a regular date with God away from all the noise. Make sure you make room in your day to “be still and know that He is God.” Open up your Bible and let the Word wash over you.
Action Steps:
Set aside time for silence and reflection.
Take a walk and look for beauty.
Listen to worship music and lift your hands to heaven.
“Let my passion for life be restored, tasting joy in every breakthrough You bring to me. Hold me close to You with a willing spirit that obeys whatever You say.” (Psalm 51:12, TPT)
Revitalize Your Soul
You need to drink up a little life in your inward man before you can serve others joyfully. Put the oxygen mask on first and breathe in nourishment. At least 15 minutes a day and one day a week, do something fun. Spend time with someone who encourages you if you are an extrovert, or engage in a solo activity that makes your heart come alive if you are in introvert.
Action Steps:
Read a novel and get lost in the story.
Journal your thoughts and count your blessings.
Head to the park with a friend and have a picnic.
“I will fully satisfy the needs of those who are weary and fully refresh the souls of those who are faint.” (Jeremiah 31:25, NET)
This month, I invite you to join me in a simple morning exercise to fix our focus on God and fight the need to always be busy.
I’ve created a one-page printable with simple sentence prayers and Scriptures to help you start your day. Download a copy and pray through these sweet promises every morning to help you break up with busy and listen for the voice of Jesus. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.
When we slow down and spend time with Jesus, He will help us filter our the junk that is robbing us of joy a and fill us with life and peace. A body surrendered to God is refreshed and ready to meet the day. Our spirit will be in tune with Him and sing His praises. Everyone around us will notice He’s given us an extra something something in our soul, and our lives will point to Jesus.
Life is sweeter when we break up wth busy and spend solo time with Jesus.

3 Big Reasons Why You Need Breathing Room
Yesterday, I decided to take a shower, get dressed and leave the house for the first time in 3 days. (Yes, I’ve been in quite a funk this week. Welcome to my world!)
I’ve been fighting a yucky cold since last Friday, but we decided I was germ-free enough to attend the mid-week service without contaminating anyone. Yay!
Getting to church on a Wednesday night seems to be an epic battle lately. But this week, we braved through all the opposition and pushed past snot and phlegm to get there.
As I stood in the sanctuary with my left-hand firmly in Bruce’s grasp, my soul soared as we sang God’s praises. I remembered God is bigger than bad days, and I found a little breathing room for my soul. My right arm lifted up high in worship, and I almost touched heaven. (Or maybe heaven came down and kissed me.).
Every minute I set aside to sit at His feet creates space for me to grow in wisdom and helps me rise above the crazy opposition in my life.
I still don’t understand why my confusing circumstances haven’t changed, but I see Him more clearly. Connecting with His presence comforts my weary soul.
More Jesus in me makes a difference and helps me keep moving forward.
How is your week going, friend? Are you feeling frazzled and kind of in an funk like me? Life is so crazy busy sometimes. I know how hard it is to slow down and sit at His feet.
I’m determined to keep fighting for that quiet space in my day — the silent moments where I can lift my heart to my God and listen for His voice.
Yes, we are busy and have much to do, but if we don’t make time to “be still and know He is God,” we will end up missing what is most important.
3 Reasons Why You Need Breathing Room
To foster rest for the body
We are constantly running on adrenaline from one emergency to the next. Breathing room with Jesus reminds us we can’t do it all, and we were never supposed to control the universe. Our bodies need to spend time in the slow lane, and a nap is good for your soul. “Doing nothing” is a restoration project we need to invest in more regularly.
“God strengthens the weary and gives vitality to those worn down by age and care. Young people will get tired; strapping young men will stumble and fall. But those who trust in the Eternal One will regain their strength. They will soar on wings as eagles. They will run—never winded, never weary. They will walk—never tired, never faint.” (Isaiah 40:29-31, VOICE)
to formulate clarity in your mind
Our minds are clogged with noise, and we are mentally exhausted. Unplugging from all that buzzes and dings and sitting in silence before your Savior will recalibrate your very tired brain. Quiet will clear the clutter. Let Jesus breathe fresh wind into your thinking as you listen for His voice.
“You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind –both its inclination and its character — is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You.” (Isaiah 26:3, AMPC)
To find peace in our soul and spirit
When we give away all our emotional energy to others, we end up exhausted. Your God never saps you of strength — solo time spent with Him always strengthens your spirit (even if you end up napping!). Quiet time is oxygen for your soul.
“The Lord is my best friend and my shepherd. I always have more than enough. He offers a resting place for me in his luxurious love. His tracks take me to an oasis of peace, the quiet brook of bliss. That’s where he restores and revives my life. He opens before me pathways to God’s pleasure and leads me along in his footsteps of righteousness so that I can bring honor to his name.” (Psalm 23:1-3, TPT)
One of the best ways to create breathing room is to breathe out your prayers. As you exhale your cares to God, you will inhale His grace and peace. You can join me on Instagram this month for a 31-Day Pray Big Challenge. I’ll share a prayer each day in Stories. (If you missed a day, you can watch all the replays because they are saved in the highlights on my profile page.
I’m also sharing a copy of My Pray Big Prayer Calendar with you. Join the Wildfire Faith Community and grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library. Print out your copy and start each morning inviting God to strengthen your step and breathe fresh wind into your weary spirit.
Life is sweeter when we slow down and sit in silence before our Savior. He breathes life into us, and we are empowered to love others with His supernatural strength.
Sit in silence with your Savior when you need breathing room.

When You Want More of God in the Morning
My pillowcase is stained with black ink marks.
I will often read my Bible in bed. I lean back against the headboard and put the pillow in my lap as a desk and lay my Bible on top of it. With pen in hand, I will start reading…. and then I start sleeping.
Yep, this Bible study teacher nods off and goes into la-la-land with the Word of life in her lap.
And, if I don’t start snoring, sometimes I will start thinking about how I need to do laundry or what I need to pick up at the grocery store.
I begin my morning reading Scripture, but I am frequently derailed by my own distracted brain.
Depending on the day, I either have spiritual ADD or a bad case of Christian narcolepsy. (Perhaps there is a support group for these maladies? I need help!)
Friends, I want more of God in the morning, but I am a big hot mess.
So, over the last few weeks, I’ve made some steps to help me combat inertia in my quiet time. I make myself get up and going instead of snuggling with the Bible in bed. Sometimes I even walk around the house and read out loud instead of sitting. I am looking for creative ways to wake my soul up.
Maybe you are more spiritually “with it” than I am, but just in case you find it hard to connect with God consistently, I thought I’d share 4 moves that have helped me make progress in the right direction.
4 Tips to Help You Get More of God in the Morning
Study in community to expand your perspective.
Digging into the Word with friends helps you understand more, see more, reflect more. You get more when you listen and learn from others. Plug into an online group for daily accountability and encouragement. Here are 3 of my favorite online study communities:
First 5 : Lysa TerKeurst and a wonderful group of seasoned Bible teachers are working their way through the Bible one chapter at a time. All of their content is easily accessible by downloading the very user-friendly free First 5 app. If you’re not a techy kind of gal, you can follow along by visiting the First 5 blog every day. Join a group through the app or purchase the Experience Guide to dive in deeper.
Love God Greatly : If you are in a crazy busy season, Love God Greatly looks at just a few verses a day. You can join a Facebook group or an e-mail group. They also do blog posts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday plus provide You Version content. Download a free PDF of the study booklet by subscribing to the blog or purchase a bound study book an Amazon. If you want everything in one place, you can download the LGG app.
Hello Mornings : Kat Lee and her team always serve up a wonderful schedule. If you are looking for a longer study with Facebook accountability groups, this is your best choice. They normally provide either a free reading plan to download or a lengthier study book at a minimal cost.
Make friends with a new Bible
I love the pages of my first Bible. I’ve underlined favorite passages and cried tears on those well-worn pages. But sometimes, you need a clean page and a fresh start.
A good study Bible is a girl’s best friend. The notes in the margins will encourage you and teach you. My all-time favorite is the Life Application Bible .
If you’ve used the same translation for quite a while, pray about switching to a different one. I purchased this ESV Journaling Bible last year on Black Friday, and I love having space in the margins to jot down key ideas, take notes, ask questions, or even write out a prayer. I don’t get all artistic with colored pens, but maybe you would like to use that space to creatively engage with the Word.
You could also buy a devotional Bible with weekly readings to encourage you. I’ve heard great things about this Bible from (in)courage.
Download and Use The Fuel Your Quiet Time Worksheet
I’ve created a one-page printable to help you FUEL your quiet time. This simple 4-step format will help you focus in on one verse and see God’s Word come alive in your heart. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.
Read More of God: A Distracted Woman’s Guide to More Meaningful Quiet Times
This week I went live on Facebook to share my new favorite resource for anyone with spiritual ADD like me. My writing friend Betsy DeCruz has written a wonderful book packed full of practical ideas on how to get more of God during of your quiet time.

Friends, change is hard, but when we get out of our comfort zone and cry out to God for more of Him, we will always reap the benefits. His Word will come alive in our hearts, and the Holy Spirit will wake us up and unveil God’s wonder to our hungry souls. With His Word filling us up, we will overflow God’s love into our homes, our work place, our church, and our neighborhood. Getting more of God makes an eternal difference, and we will never be the same again. Let’s keep pursuing Him and pushing past the challenges. The pay off is worth every effort.

When You Need to Surrender to the Sparkle
In 1983, I decided to cut my hair shorter. My friend, Maria, got a snazzy fresh look, and I played copy cat.
I loved my shorter locks on the front and side. The layers made it easy to blow dry and style. I walked the halls at school feeling lighter and way cooler.
In case you are wondering…. Yes, it is true. I was proud of my mullet.
In 1983, my mullet was all the rage.
The problem is that I loathe change. (I’ve mentioned this more than once before, — in case you hadn’t noticed).
When I looked in the mirror, that mullet looked great to me over a decade later. Many kindhearted people tried to help me adopt a different perspective. I can’t tell you how many of my 10th grade English students asked, “Ma’am, have you ever considered growing out your hair?”
No. No. No.
I kept that mullet until 2005. (No, I am not kidding. I am picturing you reading this e-mail and shaking your head in disbelief.)
Every time I considered growing out my out-dated hairdo, I’d reach a point where the discomfort of the long scraggly sides made me reach for the scissors. I’d stand in front of the mirror and chop away.
It looked clean and crisp and easy to manage to me.
I might have gone on this way forever, but one day I finally experienced an epiphany. I finally frowned into the mirror and perceived how completely archaic and unappealing I appeared to the world.
So, I hid my scissors.
I grit my teeth when the hair on the side reached down below my ears and looked uneven and messy.
I tried not to stare too long at my current reflection, and instead I imagined how beautiful my hair was going to look in the future.
A year after my scissors went into hibernation, I started a new job and made an appointment with a fancy hairdresser. I got lovely honey-colored highlights and completely updated my look.
Soon after, I met my husband. He is not a fan of the mullet, and I am probably married today because I parted with my scissors.
So my friends, I want to confess that this week I realized that I have a few other “mullets” to tackle. I have mullets in my soul. I can’t sparkle if I refuse to deal with these spots. I know that I need to grow and make changes, but frankly, I didn’t want to deal with the discomfort. I like things the way they are, and updating doesn’t seem all that necessary to me on most days. I like things the way they are.
(I think God calls this being carnal and fleshy….. Yikes!)
The time is now. If I don’t refresh and move forward, my spiritual walk will grow redundant and ineffective.
I want to sparkle instead of fizzle out.
So, I am going to grit my teeth and deal with the discomfort.
How about you?
What’s your mullet? Need a new look that sparkles?
Sometimes we must take a hard look in the mirror and make changes if we want to glitter for God’s glory.

When You Feel Like You Are Waiting for Your Life to Restart
[image error]
When I am reading a novel, I will often skip to the end to see if the hairy conflict is resolved in a happy way that makes me smile. I hate dealing with the hellish uncertainty. I want to know how the story ends. I like it all wrapped up with a pretty bow, and I want to discover the nitty gritty details when it feels comfortable to me.
I do the same with movies — I will Google the plot and read up before I pay to rent a film. (I know. I know. I have issues.)
I can’t do this with my life though. I’ve tried several times, but Google and God won’t tell me exactly how my story ends.
Waiting well is not my strength.
Lately, I feel like my life is a bit like an episode of a soap opera, and I am about 2/3 of the way through in that really messy place where the hair rises up on the back of my neck, and I just want to fast forward to the closing scene and calm myself down.
I need some serious chocolate to help me through this crazy. I want to know what’s next. How is God going to get me through this?
I know I need to learn to let go of my control issues. Years ago, I read a “surrender your crazy to God” book by Stormie Omartian titled Just Enough Light for the Step I’m On. I think about that phrase often. Maybe I can’t handle the next page right now, so God keeps me re-writing this one until I figure it out and move on to the next part of my story.
As I wait, there is work to be done. God has placed me here for a reason, and I need to stop kicking and screaming about it and just cooperate with the Master Storyteller.
I don’t know if you feel stuck right now. But I am guessing there is more than one person reading this blog who feels like they are waiting for their life to restart, and you just want to turn the page already.
I’m continually reminding myself that God writes the best stories. He is writing an epic really. And, I just need to trust Him with my more icky uncomfortable parts.
Maybe like me you are in the middle of a messy story and waiting for
a person you love to get a clue and stop being so crazy
a closed door to open wide to bigger and better things
a supernatural resolution to a really sticky situation you are struggling with
Yeah. Me, too. I am waiting for God to move and re-write a few tragic stories in my life. In case you really stink waiting well like me, I want to share a few things I learned this week from the pages of the greatest story ever written.
4 Keys to Waiting Well for Your Restart
Widen your view and watch for wonder.
God has placed you on this path, but He has a grander purpose. Stop focusing on what is not, and watch for what might be. Stay in you lane and look for glimpses of His grace. There is beauty to be found right where you are if you just look around and stop obsessing.
“Wait passionately for God, don’t leave the path. He’ll give you your place in the sun while you watch the wicked lose it.” (Psalm 37:34, MSG)
Ask God to fight your battles for you.
The enemy of your soul wants you to stop caring, stop trying, stop believing. Don’t give him that satisfaction. Never give up and believe God will turn things around. Trust your Father is fighting for you, and He will settle the score in the end.
“Don’t ever say, ‘I’ll get you for that!’ Wait for God; He’ll settle the score.” (Proverbs 20:22, MSG)
Invest in your intercession season.
Friend, the battle is won while you are on your knees. You will persevere as you push through in prayer. Make this your main priority as you wait.
“When life is heavy and hard to take, go off by yourself. Enter the silence. Bow in prayer. Don’t ask questions: Wait for hope to appear. Don’t run from trouble. Take it full-face. The ‘worst’ is never the worst.” (Lamentations 3:28-30, MSG)
Think about what’s to come.
Remember you are heaven bound, and it will be worth it when you see His face. There is more to your story than what you are experiencing here on earth.
“Just think—you don’t need a thing, you’ve got it all! All God’s gifts are right in front of you as you wait expectantly for our Master Jesus to arrive on the scene for the Finale. And not only that, but God Himself is right alongside to keep you steady and on track until things are all wrapped up by Jesus. God, who got you started in this spiritual adventure, shares with us the life of his Son and our Master Jesus. He will never give up on you. Never forget that.” (I Corinthians 1:7-9, MSG)
To help you get started, I put together list of “10 Scriptures to Help You Wait Well.” Download a copy, print it out, and meditate on one passage each morning for the next 10 days. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.
Time is never wasted on God’s watch — even when you feel like you’re waiting for your life to restart. He’ll shape and strengthen you through each step. One day, you will look back and see how He kept you standing during that long stretch. Your friends and family will ask you for your secret, and you will share: “God carried me through, and He will walk with you, too.” Just you wait and see!
Those who wait well will receive restoration and fully witness His wonder at work.

When You Are Refined by Relationships
Almost two years ago, my son, who was seven at the time, sustained second-degree burns to his face and hands. His wounds needed about two weeks to heal, which truly amazed me. But I’m still being refined by what I learned of community during that time.
To be refined means to have unwanted elements removed by a process. In other words, when we refined, we are purified, clarified, cleansed, developed, and improved.
Ben was helping his dad with a burn pile of brush when a flame flared up and my boy was standing too close. He put his hands in front of his face, probably actually protecting his eyes, but the vapors of the flames still got him. He spent two nights at Vanderbilt Medical Center’s burn unit. We came home with a bag of wound care supplies and painkillers and a faith that was being proven pure.
Maybe it hasn’t been an actual fire in your life. Maybe you’ve walked through a broken relationship, expectations that haven’t been met, disappointment caused by someone you love, dreams that haven’t come true, grief from losing someone near, or another physical-impairing experience. Maybe you’ve been sick or anxious or worried or lost.
Whatever the figurative fire that’s burned our lives, we can be refined and the people around us can help.
When Ben was recovering from his burns, I had to learn wound care techniques as his hands and face literally grew new skin. I also had to recruit a couple friends to help him do his face and hand exercises because he wasn’t responding well to our parental ways of encouraging him to do what the doctor ordered.
Our best friends came to our house before we came home to change the shower head so that Ben could shower without the water coming directly down on his tender neck and ears. They also had dinner ready for us. Another home health nurse friend came to check on his physical condition and my emotional well-being. Other friends showed up with dinner. Our church sent a candy bouquet because no first-grade boy wants flowers. People texted and prayed. One friend even fasted to spend a day in prayer for us. Gifts came in the mail and were left on our porch.
That’s community. That’s healing. That’s what being refined by relationship can look like.
I hurt for my son who hurt, but I also rejoiced in the many little ways God revealed everlasting truth to my soul through people.
I know how great this makes you feel, even though you have to put up with every kind of aggravation in the meantime. Pure gold put in the fire comes out of it proved pure; genuine faith put through this suffering comes out proved genuine. When Jesus wraps this all up, it’s your faith, not your gold, that God will have on display as evidence of his victory.
1 Peter 1:6-7, MSG
The fires in this life can be exhausting and painful. But the refinement that produces deeper faith is part of the sanctification process because God promises to finish this good work he’s begun in us (Philippians 1:6). Until we’re living our eternal life face to face with Jesus who has prepared a place for us, we will have opportunity to be refined by the people around us. Let’s not miss what God is doing in us and around us.
Healing comes when we allow relationships to help refine us during hard seasons.
