1 Thing You Should Know: God Speaks Louder
In my heart, I know God speaks louder than the negativity. But I don’t listen well.
The average person considers between 12,000 and 70,000 thoughts in one day, and psychologists estimate that over 70% of what clutters our mind is negative.
Dark thoughts can derail us. Some days, I feel like I am riding a crazy train loaded with the wrong words propelling me down a long, winding track to my destruction. I wear myself out over thinking everything.
I can’t ever do anything right.
I’m unattractive and unappealing.
If people knew the real me, no one would like me.
I will never be good enough.
The worst part of it all is that I can’t hide my horrible thoughts from God. He hears every erratic notion in my noggin. God knows me through and through, and I sometimes wonder why He puts up with me. Shame-filled words pour out of my wounded soul, and I want to put a plug over my mouth to stop them.
I am so thankful God’s thoughts are higher than my thoughts, and His ways are way above my ways. (Isaiah 55:8-9). He is the Mighty One who speaks a word and calls order over the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. (Psalm 50:1) His voice is louder than all other voices, and He speaks peace over His children.
The God of peace is speaking “Peace, be still” over me.
The Word of the Lord is stronger than the lies of the enemy. His Word speaks louder than my insecurities. His Word always proves true and shields those who take refuge in Him. (Psalm 18:30)
I need God’s Word to renew my thinking and anoint me with a Spirit-filled vocabulary. As I let the Word of the Lord wash over me, all my worries and doubts turn into worship.
Are your words out of control? Jump off the crazy train, friend. Align your erratic words and thoughts with Truth.
Quiet your heart and breathe in God’s grace today. You are fiercely loved by your Abba Father, and He is forever speaking life over you. Listen to Him whisper these words…

You matter, friend. You matter because your Savior spoke louder than death to save you.

When God Refines What You Want through the Way of Suffering
Far too often, urgency burns within me to get my own way. Just call me a strong-willed gal, but ‘oy, what an inner tussle this causes! In His goodness, however, my Father shows me a better way to live. God refines through the way of suffering.
Raise your hand if you like suffering. No? Me either. At the surface it reeks of pain and fear. But underneath, spiritual beauty unfolds. We’re wise to embrace it for the refining purposes of God.
What’s Suffering?
My family and I recently visited Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Outside the chapel doors hung a listing of graduates. If recall correctly, asterisks followed twenty-two names. Martyrs. Those twenty-two suffered and died for Christ.
I gulped. What a high price!
We may never experience martyrdom, but what if God allows suffering in our lives, our everyday decisions as the center act, to refine us? Will we allow Him?
Consider pressing and uncomfortable situations. Will we demand our own way and seek the route of comfort?
How about those times when we whisper about others or openly complain, ignoring the inner nudge for quiet?
What about the rush to worry about a loved one versus settling in with prayer—or holding close-fisted offense in hard situations versus offering intentional, peace-giving forgiveness?
Do we simply charge forward in life without inquiring about God’s will?
Beauty from refining awaits us when we refuse selfish demands.
God’s Ways
God’s ways and thoughts don’t mirror human’s ways. His rise higher.
“’For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways,’ says Yahweh. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.’” (Isaiah 55:8-9, WEB)
As an analytical, I house a need to understand. And girl, that sure feels like suffering at times! Because many of us trust ourselves more than others—even God.
When He prompted me to follow my husband as Tony re-embarked on a Naval career, it made no sense. Why would I drop my corporate job? Leave my degree in the dust? Follow a man who tucked a few college credits under his belt, then charged back into the enlisted ranks?
No thank you.
“Finish the degree. Go back in as an officer,” I whined. “Higher pay waits there. Better treatment, too.”
But God’s ways aren’t my ways. His are higher.
I suffered by not getting what “I” wanted. (Trust me. That’s suffering for a strong-willed one!) God used the decision to rejoin the Navy, instead, to refine my trust in Him.
When I thought we’d have no money, my husband and I rejoiced over $10 extra each month. When conditions remained sparse or niceties lacked, He brought provision to our door—like the paper towels that “someone” threw onto our lawn.
God even led my husband and me to wonderful churches. In those houses of worship, we grew through prayer, the Holy Spirit, missions, serving, and gathering with other believers. He brought people into our lives that remain with us years later, local folks substituting for long-distance biological grandparents, friends in whom we entrusted our most inner thoughts, and neighbors who remained on standby for times of need. They planted seeds for Christ and simply loved my children, husband, and me well.
God provided—and continues to do so today. (Remind me of this if I waver, okay?!)
Becoming Christ-Like
These everyday decisions seem small, but God uses them to help us become Christ-like.
Read Hebrews 11. Wade through the folks who set their will on the altar, sacrificing ideology, self-will, common sense, and more.
One powerful Bible verse is Hebrews 12:2. Jesus endured the cross due to the joy set before Him.
The pain. The agony. This monster of death attempting to overcome Him with such atrocity and demeaning display.
But Jesus refused temptation’s powerplay.
“Not my will,” He said. “Yours, Father.” (My paraphrase of Matthew 26:39.)
Jesus sacrificed self-will for the power and righteousness of the Father’s. The choice remains for us, too.
I desire to refuse to run ahead with what “I” want, but to sacrifice my will for that of my Father’s. I long to be refined so that the reflection folks see in me is purely the golden goodness and likeness of Christ. You too?
As God calls us to this better way, to suffer our will for His, let’s simply trust Him. And watch the glory unfold through His refining fire.
Come, Holy Spirit, counsel us. Show us Your will, Your way. Refine us through suffering in Your beautiful way. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Surrender to the way of suffering and see God’s glory.
Surrender to the way of suffering and see God’s glory.

The Refined Series
Fire refines. First God, breaks our pride into tiny pieces. Then, He melts away our impurities in a crucible of affliction. Every fleck of fleshy fluff rises to the surface and is removed until we reveal His image.
This year, I want to stop fearing the fire and pray:
Lord, refine me through the flame.
For 2018, I asked God to give me a word to guide my year, and He whispered the word “Refine.” For 10 months, Bruce and I have been walking through the fire and trying to not resist the refining work He is doing in us.
I am a very slow learner, and recently it occurred to me I should step aside and create more space to listen and learn during this season. I long to sit down for a heart-to-heart chat with a wise friend who will remind me the fire has a grander purpose. Thankfully, I am blessed to know several women who’ve walked through the fire and emerged beautifully refined, and I’ve invited them to share their story here with the Wildfire Faith Community once a month.
God has promised that the fire will not consume us, but transform us.

When You Need Promised Provision
My three-year-old grandson came to live with us this past spring, and we’ve done our best to ensure he feels safe and secure inside the four walls of our home. We’ve established a daily routine, and he knows what to expect. When Grandma promises a snack after nap time, little man knows he will wake up and receive a big serving of sliced bananas.
Yet, sometimes he wails anyway and wonders, “Where are my bananas?”
“Right here, pumpkin.” I will rise up from the couch and retrieve what he requests from my refrigerator every time. Grandma promised, and grandma always keeps her word.
As I sit in my living room watching my little man gobble up every last morsel of fruit on his plate, I think about how much I resemble an immature child in my interactions with my Heavenly Father. God has promised to provide everything I need, yet sometimes I still question and complain.
I lack for nothing. God has completely covered my life with His goodness and grace, but I have a very short-term memory sometimes.
The Levites in Joshua’s day did not receive an allotment of land. God Himself was their portion, and they made a decision to stake their claim by standing on the Word of the Lord: “The Lord commanded Moses…” (Joshua 21:2). They believed God always provides what He has promised.
Just as God established a place of residence for the Levites on earth, He is preparing a haven of rest and redemption for us in heaven. Right now, we may wonder what God is up to, but we can trust He will rise up one day very soon to completely restore us and bring total redemption.
As we wait, the Psalmist encourages us to pray for God to enlighten our understanding: “Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works.” (Psalm 119:27)
Rather than murmur about what I lack, let’s purpose to look forward and mediate on God’s marvelous work on our behalf. Remind yourself of these truths…

When You Are Refined by Family Conflict
Frustrations had reached a new level in our relationship. One word described the atmosphere between us. Tense. Every attempt at conversation ended in some sort of disagreement. Family conflict became expected, part of the routine. Pretty soon we realized avoidance was the best answer. But all I really wanted was for things to be ok again. Calm, good, agreeable.
Nothing hurts like the pain of being at odds with someone I love. Just the word conflict makes me cringe. And honestly I don’t like to talk about it. In fact, I hesitated when writing about this. Every time I tried to begin, shame crept in and caused me to question whether I’m a good mom, wife, daughter, or sister.
But those questions are not from God. So instead of letting shame get the upper hand, let’s turn to God’s Word for help with facing family conflict.
When we’re smack in the middle of conflict, we may not see a way out. And the more stuck we feel, the more power we give it.
The conflict becomes so BIG that it suffocates all the good in our relationship. Rather than letting it tower over us and take away our hope, let’s remember this. Conflict is simply two people viewing the same situation in two different ways. We can welcome in God’s refining power by first seeing conflict for what it really is – an opportunity to grow.
“Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon.” Philippians 4:4-5 NLT
We sometimes make the mistake of relying on our own strength to handle difficult situations involving family. We love our people so much that our emotions can get in the way, leaving us feeling defeated.
But God’s Word always provides a better way.
In the powerful verse above, the apostle Paul gives us two ways we can allow God to refine us through family conflict.
ALWAYS BE FULL OF JOY.
Even in the middle of a squabble, we can show joy. Letting the joy of the Lord flow from us will ease tensions and usher in peace. Proverbs 17:22 (NASB) says, “A joyful heart is good medicine…” Conflict in families may be unavoidable, but a joy-filled attitude makes every situation better.
BE CONSIDERATE.
We don’t have to agree in order to show consideration for another person. Our loved ones need our kindness. This doesn’t mean we allow any destructive words or actions toward us, but that we allow our own words and actions to be led by love.
Even if everything inside me wants to scream and shout, God’s Word teaches me to approach any conflict with a thoughtful heart.
Resolving conflict doesn’t always involve convincing the other person we’re right. True resolution happens when we openly share our hearts and resolve to still love each other.
When we see conflict as a sign of defeat, we miss an opportunity to let God refine us and work a miracle in our families. But as we approach it with a joyful attitude and consideration for others, we discover renewed hope.
If you’ve felt plagued by conflict with family, take heart. You’re not alone. Families will have clashes from time to time. Conflict doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. You are not a bad mom, wife, daughter, or sister. God will use this circumstance to develop you into the strong, grace-filled woman He created you to be.
So let’s view conflict from a renewed perspective today. Frustration no longer needs to be a daily thing, and disagreements don’t have to be part of the routine. We can rest in knowing that no struggle is ever wasted.
God is refining, changing, and loving us and our families.
Your family conflict is molding you into a more grace-filled woman.

When You Bend Down and Believe
I struggle to believe.
I woke up a few weeks ago with a knot in my stomach. My anxiety was so heavy that I couldn’t hold food down for several hours. To settle my nerves, I nibbled on bite-sized pieces of bread and drank sips of Gatorade. All morning, I sat in my living room with my Bible open on my lap and asked God to help me push past fear.
“Lord, we need a breakthrough.” Someone I loved was in a heap of trouble, and there was not a thing I could do to change it. All I could do was pray.
So with a heavy heart, I cried out to God and asked Him to do what I could not. I asked Him to interrupt my loved one and turn her around.
I needed a miracle.
I asked the Creator who spoke this vast universe into existence to say a word of life and peace over my family.
I looked to my Savior to fight for me and with me. My Jesus who conquered the ravages of sin and death must once again rescue a lost soul from the gates of hell.
I groaned as the tears fell and asked the Holy Spirit to help.
Do it again, Jesus. Do it again.
Lord, I want to believe You can do the impossible…
Join me at Kristine’s to discuss how God turns our what ifs into without a doubt when we bend down and believe.
When we bend down and believe, our what ifs turn into without a doubt.

When You are Refined by Loneliness
My earliest memories involve feelings of loneliness and longing. Born with a highly sensitive personality, my little spirit was continually bombarded with all the feelings of life in our sin broken family. Even when I was too young to actually know and understand the facts of what was happening under our roof, I felt it. I sensed it.
Mama was busy with all of the needs and cares and work of having seven children. She didn’t have the time, nor perhaps the ability, to delve into the deeps of her own emotions, much less mine. Daddy, while perhaps a bit more in tune with my flights of fancy and imagination than my practical mama, found someone that took him away from mama and us kids.
The combination of my sensitive spirit and the secrets that lived in our house and in my little heart reinforced my feelings of isolation, loneliness and longing to be really heard, really seen, really known, really understood. I didn’t know who to turn to and so I’d lay in bed at night and talk to Jesus about it all. He was the one to whom I poured out all of my little girl worries, fears, longings, hopes and dreams.
Still, I always wished for a flesh and blood best friend, a bosom friend that I could tell anything and everything to. I had many good friends through my growing up years, but never one that was a confidant to me. So through my youth and into my teens and then on into college, Jesus was still the One I talked to about anything and everything.
I started dating my husband in my freshman year of college and as we got more serious I trusted him enough that I told him all of the things I’d never told anyone but Jesus. Once we got married, I thought it would always be like that moment. He would always be my willing listener, my eager comforter, my bosom friend and the cure for my perpetual loneliness and longing.
One year into our marriage and we were in the pastor’s office asking for marriage counseling. My husband wasn’t doing his job, in my opinion. He wasn’t meeting all of my needs. I still felt lonely and misunderstood. I was eager for our pastor to straighten him out, for him to tell my husband that he needed to do a better job of filling up my emptiness. Instead, the pastor turned to me and said, “If another human being could meet all of your needs, then you wouldn’t need Jesus.” Those words became life changing for me. Those words drove me back to my First Love, to my Bosom Friend, to the One Who had always been my Willing Listener and Eager Comforter.
I know now that loneliness was a gift from God that drove me to His heart. I have an intimacy in my relationship with God that I don’t think I would have had if I had found a bosom friend or soul mate who fully understood my complicated “feel all the feels deeply” personality. I know now that my emptiness was never meant to be filled by anyone but Him. I know now that God fully and clearly knows me and understands me and, praise Him, unwaveringly loves me.
“For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim blurred reflection of reality as in a riddle or enigma, but then when perfection comes we shall see in reality and face to face! Now I know in part imperfectly, but then I shall know and understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully and clearly known and understood by God.”( 1 Corinthians 13:12, AMPC)
A recent survey reveals that 46 percent of us struggle with loneliness. I imagine that the majority of those people, think the cure for to their loneliness and emptiness will be found in a friend or a spouse. I once thought the same thing. That’s a lot of pressure to put on another human being. May I encourage you to let your loneliness drive you to the heart of the One Who created you, delights in the uniqueness of who you are, and loves you more than anyone else ever could.
Loneliness is a gift from God that drives us to His heart.

An Epic Victory
Years ago, I purchased a novel at a local bookstore that was an epic three-part story. I wasn’t sure if I’d like the narrative, so I only invested in the first volume of the trilogy. When I got home, I sat down on the couch, poured myself a cup of tea, and got lost in the drama. The conflict was fierce, and I had no idea how the tangled plot twists could possibly turn around and result in a favorable outcome.
When I reached the last page of the book, I was fully invested. The cliffhanger ending left me hungry for more – because just one part of a story is never fully satisfying. I could hardly wait to read the rest.
The exciting story in Micah 5 reminds me of that same trilogy. Micah describes an epic battle where a new ruler rises up from obscurity. This hero saves the people of Israel who were surrounded by the adversary’s military forces. But that’s only the first section of the story.
If you stop reading at part one, you miss the even grander narrative that follows. Our Savior was born in Bethlehem to rescue us from the clutches of the enemy of our soul. And, an even grander victory is still coming at the end of the ages when Christ returns to reign forever and wipes out the foe once and for all.
Maybe right now, you are really dissatisfied about the current page of your narrative. Perhaps you are in the middle of a tumultuous conflict, and you are worried about what’s next. You can trust God with your story. He has promised us a spectacular ending.

How to Praise Him Before Your Breakthrough
Last night I spent 35 minutes telling a group of women God has positioned them for victory. God has enriched their lives with grace. God had empowered them to bring praise to Him despite their problems.
You don’t have to live imprisoned by your circumstances. You are positioned in Christ, and He has placed everything under His feet.
I said it like I meant it. I believed it.
And then, thirty minutes later I was at home sitting in my living room, and I realized I am going to have to live it.
We got a heartbreaking phone call. The enemy sneaked in with his wicked schemes and suckerpunched us in the worse way.
So, I am going to pick myself up off the floor and push back fear. I am going to stand on the promises and praise Him. I am not feeling it, but I am going to faith it.
My God is able, and He is in control even when my life seems crazy.
He is the Lifter of my head, and as I look to Him, He will help me.
He will help me one step of faith at a time.
Maybe like me you feel sucker punched by an unexpected problem. Your God is with you, friend. He is a Man of Sorrows, and He is close to the brokenhearted.
Praise Him before your breakthrough, and He will empower you to persevere.
How to Praise Him Before Your Breakthrough
Remember Who You Are
You are chosen. God created the world with you in mind, and He has crafted a plan for your life. (Ephesians 1:4)
You are adopted. Put on your princess hat. Your are a royal daughter of the King of Kings. (Ephesians 1:5)
You are accepted. God love will never let you go. He longs to lavish you with the gifts of His grace. (Ephesians 1:6)
“Long before he laid down earth’s foundations, he had us in mind, had settled on us as the focus of his love, to be made whole and holy by his love. Long, long ago he decided to adopt us into his family through Jesus Christ. (What pleasure he took in planning this!) He wanted us to enter into the celebration of his lavish gift-giving by the hand of his beloved Son.” (Ephesians 1:4-6, MSG)
Recognize What You Have
You are enriched with every spiritual blessing from God. (Ephesians 1:3-6)
You are redeemed and forgiven by the riches of Christ’s grace. (Ephesians 1:7-8)
You have an inheritance in heaven. Your salvation is sure and sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14)
“It’s in Christ that you, once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your salvation), found yourselves home free—signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit. This signet from God is the first installment on what’s coming, a reminder that we’ll get everything God has planned for us, a praising and glorious life.” (Ephesians 1:13-14, MSG)
Request What You Need
Pray you will grow in wisdom and intimacy with your God in the middle of your hard season. (Ephesians 1:17)
Ask God to fill you with His hope as you look to heaven and help you stay faithful to your calling. (Ephesians 1:18)
Look to the God seated on the throne over all and ask Him to empower you with His strength for today. (Ephesians 1:19-23)
“I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength!” (Ephesians 1:17-19, MSG)
When we know were are positioned in Christ, we are able to offer praise in any place, even in the midst of our temporary problems. God has a purpose for your pain, and you overcome the enemy through the Word of your testimony and thanks to the work of Jesus in your life.
Maybe God’s mission for you is to pave the way for others to find Him.
To help you figure things out, I’ve created two great resources: The “My Mission Statement” worksheet will walk you through the steps to creating a clear focus for your life. Plus, I also provided a list of 10 mission-minded Scriptures for you to print out and pray over this week for inspiration. 5 Simple Ways to Learn from Your Limp and Move Forward
I spent years pretending I didn’t have a limp. I chose to ignore the dead weight and act like there was no collateral damage in my life. I pushed my way forward through this world and paid no attention to my pain.
Then, when the I finally grew way too exhausted from dragging all the brokenness behind me, I just gave up. I finally stopped to look at the mangled pieces I couldn’t fix, and I felt totally paralyzed. I feared I was far too fractured to make a difference.
Life will never be the same again, I thought. And it wasn’t. But I still had breath in me, and I could still put one foot in front of the other. Tiny steps are still progress.
I can take a tiny step closer to God in my brokenness.
I can limp my way toward another hurting person with encouragement.
I can get out of bed today and bring a blessing to the dark corners of this world — even if I have to brace myself as I limp my way through the shadows.
Here’s the thing about a limp: You can’t really hide it. Your weakness is on display for the world to watch.
I thought my limp made me a loser, but when I finally let people see how much I lacked strength, God gave me new eyes to see how to walk.
My limp helped me learn and led me in a new direction.
I may not be tough, but I am more compassionate.
I may not be quick, but I can quietly persevere.
I may not be perfectly lovely, but my broken life makes room for God’s glory to spill out through the cracks.
Maybe right now you are reading this, and you feel like you cannot take another step. You’ve taken a hard hit, and you think you are too weak and wobbly to even stand.
Friend, your life is not damaged beyond repair. Just pick up the pieces and hand them to Jesus.
Let your limp lead you forward, my sister.
5 Simple Ways to Learn from Your Limp
Listen Up
God is always speaking peace over your life, but you must quiet your heart to hear Him when your pain is wailing loudly. Grab a notebook, your Bible, and your favorite pen and set aside time each day to sit at His feet. Pray and ask God to speak to you and show you which way to go. Make sure you write down a little each day — because sometimes you will look back later down the road and see patterns you may miss right now.
“I will hear what the True God—the Eternal—will say, for He will speak peace over His people, peace over those who faithfully follow Him, but do not let them abuse His gift and return to foolish ways. Without a doubt, His salvation is near for those who revere Him so that He will be with us again and all His glory will fill this land.” (Psalm 85:8-9, Voice)
Lean In
Limps teach us we are not self-sufficient. We must depend on God’s strength to guide us for every step. Get in the Word as much as possible and ask for wisdom and strength. Don’t binge watch Netflix — binge read Proverbs and pray through.
“My son, pay attention to all the words I am telling you. Lean in closer so you may hear all I say. Keep them before you; meditate on them; set them safely in your heart. For those who discover them, they are life. They bring wholeness and healing to their bodies.” (Proverbs 4:20-22, Voice)
Learn
God never allows us to limp through down into the depths of despair without teaching us a deeper truth. What is one step you can take this week to walk closer to God? Let your pain push your closer to Him and press in for more. The enemy of your soul wants to paralyze you with fear, but you can push forward into the depths of obedience and develop a deeper intimacy with God in this season. Don’t miss out on the goodness God wants to reveal to you. (Remember Job said he came to see God more clearly through the hardest season of his life.).
“Be good to Your servant, God; be as good as Your Word. Train me in good common sense; I’m thoroughly committed to living Your way. Before I learned to answer You, I wandered all over the place, but now I’m in step with Your Word…My troubles turned out all for the best—they forced me to learn from Your textbook.” (Psalm 119:69-71, MSG)
Let Go and Look Ahead
The sad truth is that because of sin we live in a broken world. Until Jesus comes back and rescues us, we will all limp in some way. Once you let go of your expectations for a pain-free life, you can push past doubt as you look forward to heaven. You may be limping right now, but one glorious day very soon you will get a brand new lease on life. Hold on to this truth: No one will limp in heaven.
“So we have no reason to despair. Despite the fact that our outer humanity is falling apart and decaying, our inner humanity is breathing in new life every day. You see, the short-lived pains of this life are creating for us an eternal glory that does not compare to anything we know here. So we do not set our sights on the things we can see with our eyes. All of that is fleeting; it will eventually fade away. Instead, we focus on the things we cannot see, which live on and on.” (II Corinthians 4:17-18, Voice)
Linger and Love
Ask God to give you eyes to see other limpers around you and show up in their lives. Telling another hurting soul your story can make an eternal difference — and all you have to do is open up your mouth and speak. Your pain has created a space in your soul for you to empathize with the hurting and bring encouragement. Don’t stay silent.
“All praises belong to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. For He is the Father of tender mercy and the God of endless comfort. He always comes alongside us to comfort us in every suffering so that we can come alongside those who are in any painful trial. We can bring them this same comfort that God has poured out upon us.” (II Corinthians 1:3-4, TPT)
God allows us to be marked for ministry. Listen to your limp — it will lead you to God’s great mission for your life.
To help you get started, I’ve created two great resources for you: The “My Mission Statement” worksheet will walk you through the steps to creating a clear focus for your life. Plus, I also provided a list of 10 mission-minded Scriptures for you to print out and pray over this week for inspiration. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.
God wants to use your limp to make a difference in this world full of lost souls. As you start taking baby steps of faith, people will begin to notice you are walking with a surer step because God is your strength. We can limp forward with His love in our hearts and help bring healing to the hurting.
Learn from your limp, and you can move forward to new freedom.

3 Excellent Ways to Let Empty Refine You and Not Define You
“I’m sorry, there’s no heartbeat.”
My heart skipped a beat. A miscarriage landed me in the bed with low back pain and abdominal discomfort. The same as birth bangs when my daughter was born. Except there’s no baby to hold or name or take home.
The doctor described this three-day nightmare as a natural way the ten-week-old fetus continued to exit my body. He even said this was the best case scenario to avoid a medical procedure to clear anything left behind. But I just cared about what had happened to my unborn baby and the unseen scars left behind.
My womb not only emptied itself of the baby I dreamt would be our second child, but I also felt an undeniable emptiness—a hollow space with an echo of loss.
Months after, my empty womb threatened to rob my joy as a woman and as a mother. Sadness crept in while explaining it to my two-year-old daughter every time she asked, “Is the baby in your tummy, Mommy?” Even telling my co-workers and friends seemed daunting. And the waiting period before attempting another pregnancy seemed like forever.
So when my womb was full of life again, fear of “what if” cast a shadow on the good news and celebration. I insisted to my husband we not tell a soul. Not until I reached the end of the first trimester, and moved past the point of anxiety to a place of hope.
But supercharged panic set in at the ten-week mark. Pain coupled with blood screamed, You’re losing the baby again!
Relieved is an understatement when the ultrasound found a strong heart beating to the rhythm of life. My baby boy made his appearance to the world thirty weeks later.
While I grieved the child who died in utero, the Lord helped me move past the past with a promise: life begins at conception, I will see this child again in heaven or when the Lord returns.
No doubt, you are familiar with your own empty. Maybe you know what it’s like to walk through miscarriage. Or your womb has never been full of life, and it has haunted you. Perhaps your emptiness was left behind from addiction, sexual violation, a failed marriage, lost career aspirations or death of a loved one.
Because we can almost always mark a moment when empty made an entry point in our story. Still, empty doesn’t define who we are, we were misinformed by the enemy of our souls.
3 Ways To Let Empty Refine You And Not Define You
Stop Bearing The Weight Of Empty
Mary’s womb was supernaturally filled. Her baby boy, God’s Son, made His appearance to the world—His heart beating to the rhythm of eternal life. Jesus willingly emptied himself on a cross to not only take on our sins, but to also carry our sorrows. We were never meant to bear empty.
“Who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:6-8, ESV)
“Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.” (Isaiah 53:4, ESV)
Start Healing Through Jesus’ Scars
If we were never lost, we wouldn’t need a Savior. And if we were never empty, we wouldn’t appreciate God’s fullness. The Father uses the suffering from empty to refine us and make us more like Christ. At Calvary, pain coupled with blood screamed, I died to give you eternal and abundant life…to heal your scars…to restore what empty cost you.
“He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on Him, and by His wounds we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5, NIV)
Stay Living In Victory Through Resurrection Power
Here’s the best Good News to tell every living soul: Jesus Christ rose from the dead, leaving behind an empty tomb, so that we can leave behind empty. Christ overcame an empty tomb, so that we can overcome emptiness. Christ brings resurrection power into every circumstance we face.
“And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you.” (Romans 8:11, NIV)
Something beautiful happens when we let God use empty to refine us. It has the ability to turn our life in to something more than we ever imagined.
Empty was never meant to define me, but to refine me to resemble Christ.
Empty was never meant to define me, but to refine me to resemble Christ.

For 2018, I asked God to give me a word to guide my year, and He whispered the word “Refine.” For the next 10 months, Bruce and I walked through the fire and tried to not resist the refining work He is doing in us.
I am a very slow learner, and recently it occurred to me I should step aside and create more space to listen and learn during this refining season.
