5 Easy Ways to Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude

Once upon a time, a girl named Lyli got out of bed grumpy and decided she deserved to have a bad attitude for just one day. Instead of giggling with her grandson as he played, she grumbled and complained about dysfunctional people and crazy circumstances out of her control. Anywhere she went, her frowny face cast a shadow over everyone she loved. For one sad day, she sowed seeds of discontent and doubt. Because she foolishly forgot to cultivate an attitude of gratitude, she reaped the fruit of bitterness.

Have you had a dark day recently?  Yeah, me too. I woke up crabby, and I decided to sulk all day. Not pretty.

Focusing on what we don’t have or can’t have never produces anything beautiful in our lives. If I am wondering why things keep slipping out of my hands, I fail to see the wonder in the small gifts of grace God has given me.

I don’t find joy in my husband’s embrace because I am letting my unreasonable expectations suck all the life out of me.
I fail to miss those sweet moments of playing peekaboo with my grandson because I am thinking about cleaning up a mess. (And I am not talking about toys. This kind of mess requires supernatural intervention.)
I don’t take time to slow down and listen to the Lord and savor my friendships. Instead, I keep seeking to satisfy my empty soul with unhealthy stuff that makes me forget God has already given me everything I need.

Some days, I forget how blessed I really am.

I am set free from sin and death. Salvation is sweet.

I’ve been fully forgiven. I have tasted and seen that God is good.

I am filled with the peace of God. Greater is He who is in me than he who is in the world.

What am I complaining about?

When I fail to cultivate an attitude of gratitude, I forget my God is faithful.

If you feel like you are in a spiritual funk, and you need a swift kick in the pants to get back on track with God, you are not alone. The easiest way to start walking out of the fog and into the Light is to “faith it until you feel it.” Every day, we can do small things to stir up our hearts and fight against spiritual lethargy.

Let’s begin by taking simple steps to remember God is good, and we have 10,000 reasons to be grateful.

5 Easy Ways to Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude
Create a list of 3 reasons to say thank You every day.

Notice the little things, and don’t let the wonder of life pass you by. We are prone to take for granted the sacred joy of simple moments, but every day is a sweet gift from God. Start a daily habit of looking for God’s extraordinary grace at work in your every day ordinary.

“Through Jesus, then, let us keep offering to God our own sacrifice, the praise of lips that confess His name without ceasing.” (Hebrews 13:15, Voice

Counter negative thinking by singing God’s praises.

Combat fear, doubt and ingratitude by opening your mouth and rehearsing the truth. On days when your faith is waning, worship music can refill your empty tank and refresh your spirit. Put your favorite songs into a Thanksgiving playlist to help you regularly raise a hallelujah.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. Therefore my heart celebrates, and I give thanks to Him with my song.” (Psalm 28:7, CSB)

Bonus: I created a “Thank You, Jesus” playlist for us on Spotify.

Construct an altar of remembrance

A couple of years ago, my pastor handed us all a rock and a sharpie. He told us to look back over the year and think about the greatest blessing God had granted us for that year, and then to write it down as an Ebenezer stone of remembrance. Bruce and I were so touched by the experience that we decided to go back and do one for each year of our marriage, and moving forward we plan to do this every year as a family tradition. Looking at our rocks helps us remember God is faithful.

Choose to  read a book full of wise counsel.

Recalibrate your thinking by pouring over the pages of Choosing Gratitude by Nancy Leigh DeMoss. This sweet book is packed full of Scriptural wisdom and practical advice on how to live with a thankful disposition.

Count your blessings from A to Z.

Grab your favorite pen, a piece of paper, and brainstorm a list of 26 reasons to be thankful.  Bruce and I put together a list every November and share it with each other on Thanksgiving morning.

To help you get started, I’ve created a one-page printable for you to count your blessings from A to Z this month.  Download a copy and grab a cup of tea. Then, find a quiet spot to sit down for a spell to reflect on how God has shown up for you in unexpected ways this past year.  Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and  grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.

Bonus: I’m also going to count my blessings from A to Z on my Instagram and Facebook for the first 26 days in November, and I’d love for you to join me there and share yours.

When we cultivate an attitude of gratitude, our perspective changes. Instead of seeing looking back at what we are missing, we stand resolute with eyes forward on eternity. We have the hope of heaven, and one day very soon we will see Jesus face to face. Taking a few minutes each day to remember God is faithful will fill us with joy that will spill out to everyone we meet.

Let’s look forward to the day when we will bow at our Savor’s feet and cry, “Holy, Holy, Holy.”  Remember this world is not your home, and God is not finished yet. He fills our lives with good things, and His promises never fail.

The best way to greet a bad day is to get busy cultivating an attitude of gratitude.

How to Hope in God When a Door Closes (Refined Series)

“God, how is this fair? I don’t get it!” I was so upset over the news I’d received that I couldn’t even tell my family for several hours. My dream of a writing opportunity that seemed to align with my ministry vision ended with an “I wish I had better news for you” letter. The editor had written a kind and thoughtful letter, but disappointment weighed heavy. How do you move on with hope when a door closes?

All afternoon, I stayed quiet; talking about it might make me cry. On autopilot, I finished up the last chores of the day and chopped vegetables in the kitchen as the late afternoon sun poured in through the windows.

That evening, my story tumbled out over the chicken stir-fry with a flood of words and even a few tears at the family dinner table. (Awkward for my 22-year-old son.)

I knew God had a purpose, but the latest shut door opened up old wounds from a recent season of disappointments for our family. What was God doing?

Friend, you may be facing your own closed doors.

You may be wondering, “Is God really working for my good? How can I trust Him with this?” As much as we wish everything in life went according to our plan, we’ve all faced disappointment:

You didn’t get the job. (Or you lost the one you had.)
The closing on the house didn’t go through.
Your child didn’t make the team.

How can we hold on to hope when the door closes?

I’m learning to give God thanks for closed doors.

I always remember a coffee date years ago with an older, wiser friend. When I shared the sad news that my child hadn’t received admission to his dream school, my friend said simply, “I always thank God for closed doors. If God never shut any doors, how would we know which ones to go through?”

That simple piece of wisdom transformed my outlook.

3 Truths You Can Hold on to When a Door Closes
God has ultimate control.

“What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.” (Revelation 3:7, NIV)

I can bang on closed doors all I want, but it won’t change a thing. Ultimately, I must surrender my life to God’s sovereign control, trusting He closed the door for a good reason: He evidently did not want me to go through it.

After I pour out my disappointment to God in prayer, I can trust Him to open another door for me in the future, perhaps one I can’t even see now.

We can trust God’s love and faithfulness.

“All the ways of the LORD are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.” (Psalm 25:10, NIV)

Even when we cannot see any good in our lost opportunity, we can trust that God is choosing a path for us. A path forged by His love and faithfulness. We may not understand God’s ways in our lives, but we choose to believe they are loving and faithful.

We have a secure place in Him.

“Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.” (Psalm 23:6, NIV)

That evening I poured out my heart at the family dinner table, my husband reached out and gently touched my shoulder.

It helped to know I wasn’t alone.

Just like my husband reached out to me, God is reaching out to us, my friend. He longs to reassure us of a promise: His goodness and love will accompany us all our days.

When God closes a door, we can trust He is guiding us down the path He has chosen, a path that leads to goodness and love.

You may not see it now, but the closed door you’re staring at is a blessing in disguise.

Let’s Chat:  What would our lives look like if we asked God for grace to surrender and trust Him with our closed doors?

Which one of these truths from Scripture could you whisper to yourself today?

Will you pray with me? “Lord, thank you for directing my paths. When you close doors for me, would you give me the grace to thank and praise you? All your ways are loving and faithful. Blessed be your name. Amen.”

The Refined Series

Fire refines. First God, breaks our pride into tiny pieces. Then, He melts away our impurities in a crucible of affliction. Every fleck of fleshy fluff rises to the surface and is removed until we reveal His image.

This year, I want to stop fearing the fire and pray:

Lord, refine me through the flame.

For 2018, I asked God to give me a word to guide my year, and He whispered the word  “Refine.”  For 10 months, Bruce and I have been walking through the fire and trying to not resist the refining work He is doing in us.

I am a very slow learner, and recently it occurred to me I should step aside and create more space to listen and learn during this season. I long to sit down for a heart-to-heart chat with a wise friend who will remind me the fire has a grander purpose. Thankfully, I am blessed to know several women who’ve walked through the fire and emerged beautifully refined, and I’ve invited them to share their story here with the Wildfire Faith Community once a month.

God has promised that the fire will not consume us, but transform us.

4 Ways to Walk Wisely in a World Gone Mad

My husband walked into the room and found me sitting in front of a muted television set. He raised his eyebrows to question the self-imposed silence. I shrugged my shoulders in response. “I had to turn off the sound because they are talking crazy.” I had enjoyed the first 30 minutes of the show, but the storyline suddenly took a wayward turn toward wickedness. Now, I doubted I could continue to watch and walk wisely.

What I listen to impacts how I live. If I let my mind linger in dark spaces, my actions will surely start leaning the wrong direction.

To walk wisely, I can’t let the world shape my thinking. I need to saturate my mind with God’s life-giving truth.

Maybe like me, you’ve spent more time binging on Netflix or YouTube lately than you have opening your Bible. I must confess the other day I spent several hours watching video after video without having spent one second in the Word.

Why do I do this? It’s madness.

It’s easy to think I am immune to the crazy upside-down thinking of the world. I tell myself I can watch a show that condones what God hates because “I don’t believe that way,” but I am indulging in sin anyway. I am biting the apple, gobbling up sin, wiping my mouth, and making excuses.

I am tired of wasting my time on what doesn’t matter. Mindlessly sitting in front of the TV for hours at the end of a long day does not renew my soul. It feeds my flesh.

Maybe I am just preaching to myself this week, but I want to do better.

I want to live with passion for Jesus, not plop down like a lazy coach potato.

I want to fuel my faith with intention, not fill time with the empty thinking of the world.

Just in case you are battling to stay spiritually alert in a world where everyone else seems to be in a coma, I thought I’d share my new 4-step spiritual therapy plan for renewing my thinking:

4 Ways to Walk Wisely in a World Gone Mad
Write God’s Word on your heart.

Like the people in Bible times who wore phylacteries with the Torah tied to their arms and forehead, we are called to clothe ourselves in the Word and cooperate with the Holy Spirit as He engraves God’s wisdom on our hearts. The world has a message that is blaring loudly through social media, music, and movies, but we have to turn off that noise and tune in to God’s Truth. What if we decided to unplug the TV and break up with Netflix? Think of how much more time we’d have to hear from God! We waste so much time on mindless entertainment instead of meditating on the Word. It’s futile to look to Facebook to fill  us up and make us happy.

A wise woman knows only seeking the Lord truly sets her free and help her find lasting joy and peace.

“Dear friend, do what I tell you; treasure my careful instructions. Do what I say and you’ll live well. My teaching is as precious as your eyesight—guard it! Write it out on the back of your hands; etch it on the chambers of your heart.” (Proverbs 7:1-3, MSG)

Incline your mind to God’s Truth as your dependable guide.

Just accept it — we all have a bit of spiritual myopia. We just can’t see everything coming ahead. We need God to guide us because the road ahead is unclear, and He alone knows the way. When we shed self reliance and seek His help, He never leaves us helpless. Step by step, He shows us which way to go as we fully lean on Him.

A wise woman embraces what God says instead of following her fickle emotions.

“How sweet are Your living promises to me; sweeter than honey is Your revelation-light. For Your truth is the source of my understanding, not the falsehoods of those who don’t know You, which I despise. Truth’s Shining Light. Truth’s shining light guides me in my choices and decisions; the revelation of Your word makes my pathway clear. To live my life by Your righteous rules has been my holy and lifelong commitment.” (Psalm 119:103-106, TPT)

Submit your will and humbly surrender to follow God’s way.

Greedily grabbing for “more” never satisfies. When we take off our bossy pants and stop being brats, that is when true intimacy with God begins. Wisdom never demands its own way, but trusts that God will make a way even when there seems to be no way. Even if we don’t get what we originally wanted, we get more of Him — and that is the greatest treasure of all.

A wise woman prays, “Lord, have Your way in me.”

“Trust in the Lord completely, and do not rely on your own opinions. With all your heart rely on Him to guide you, and He will lead you in every decision you make. Become intimate with Him in whatever you do, and He will lead you wherever you go. Don’t think for a moment that you know it all, for wisdom comes when you adore Him with undivided devotion and avoid everything that’s wrong. Then you will find the healing refreshment your body and spirit long for.” (Proverbs 3:5-8, TPT)

Embrace generosity to express gratitude to your God.

God modeled sacrificially giving for us on the cross, and we grow when we follow His example and live with an open handed heart. We can never out-give God, and He never leaves us empty handed. Trusting Him with what we treasure is the best investment we can make in this world.

A wise woman finds joy as she pours out her life out as a praise offering.

“Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commandments! …It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice. For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever.” (Psalm 112:1, 5-6, ESV)

Want to walk like a wise woman? I’ve created a one-page printable with 10 Blessings for the Student of the Word to help us get started. When we walk wisely, the world will take note and wonder what makes us different. We will have no need to fear what man may say or do in response because God’s Word will be a shield about us, and He will always lift our head up from the shadows. His Word will be our delight and direct our steps.

With God’s help, you can walk wisely in a world gone mad.

With God’s help, you can walk wisely in a world gone mad.

4 Things Fueling My Faith Right Now

Sometimes you just need to take a nap. Now that our grandson is living with us, we have learned to love sneaking some time under the covers in the middle of the day. Those Spaniards who relish the siesta really know the secret. Taking a mid-day nap makes a huge difference. Fueling your faith starts with repairing your frazzled soul.

Here’s the thing that makes no sense to me, but is really a proven fact: When life is crazy busy, and I am overwhelmed, the best thing I can do is to push the pause button and slow down.

It’s not my instinct to do less, but when I slow down, I never regret it. The important thing is to not just sit in front of the television all day mindlessly becoming a coach potato and eating junk food. That doesn’t help.

I can refuel my empty soul and reignite my faith if I fill up my free time with life-giving enjoyment.

How about you? Are you running on empty and forgetting to take care of yourself? Maybe you are so busy taking care of everyone else that you’ve forgotten to put on the oxygen mask first.

This past week, God reminded me of a few simple steps I can take to fuel my faith, and I thought I’d share them in case you are lacking inspiration and need a little spark to get you started.

4 Things Fueling My Faith Right Now
Sacred Rest

I’ve slowly been reading through Dr. Saundra Dalton Smith’s life-changing book Sacred Rest. Learning about the 7 types of rest she unpacks in her book has helped me make significant changes in my life so that I can renew my energy and restore my sanity during a crazy season. I’m learning I need to carve out time out to rest even in the midst of this very crazy busy season. Without rest, I will simply not thrive.

Song

Yesterday, I was driving home from a doctor’s appointment with the radio on, and Moriah Peters reminded me that I don’t need to know what is next because God is with me every step. I was smiling and singing along one minute, and then I cried the ugly cry. I don’t know what’s next, but I can look back and see ten thousand reasons to trust He is working all things for good. Sometimes you have to sing the words and keep taking steps forward before y0u know how God is going to part the waters and make a way through the dark sea of discouragement. I’m sharing my Spotify playlist with you to help you raise a hallelujah wherever you are standing today:

Sisters

I’ve been hunkered down at home trying to put out fires for months, but this past week my friends lured me out of hiding and showered me with birthday love (My actual birthday was last month, but it’s never too late to celebrate!). When you make room to listen to your friends, you realize you are not alone in the struggle. I came home so encouraged, and I”ve decided I need to set aside time for more coffee dates to renew my soul. (Note: I actually don’t drink coffee. I am a fan of a good cup of tea instead. I hope we can still be friends!).

Scripture

Recently, I pulled my copy of Daily Light on the Daily Path off the bookshelf and put it on my nightstand. Every morning, when the alarm rings, I remind myself “Word before world,” and I pick up that sweet book and read the daily reading — which is basically just a collection of Scriptures centered on the same theme. Yesterday, I opened up the morning reading and started my day with Job 23:10: “But He knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.

When You Are Refined by Surrender

Worry, fear, and anxiety welled up within me. Every facet of our lives felt like it was under attack. Have you ever been there? Overwhelmed with anxiety-provoking chaos, and feeling utterly helpless to control it? The temptation to surrender to fear is strong.

The thing was, I had talked to patient after patient for years in my private practice about the illusion of control. So much of our anxiety stems from trying to control what we can when so much of life feels uncontrollable. We can’t control our spouses, but we try to control our children. We can’t control our work environment, but we try to control our home. We can’t control our finances, but we try to control our weight.

It’s in the seeking to control, that we lose the gift of surrendering our burdens to the Lord.

What if we just surrender?

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you” (1 Peter 5:6-7 NLT).

Somehow during life’s most tumultuous times we can forget God’s simple commands and His promise of provision. During such times it’s so helpful to have friends who will speak the truth in love.

I had left home for a few days of peace and solitude, concerned with so many things hitting our family at once. My husband advocated for me to take a couple of quiet days at the beach to just walk and talk with the Lord.

I spent hours walking the beach those few days, seeking the Lord for answers, and mixing my salty tears with those the ocean dropped on the shore.

On one particular walk my cell phone rang from my pocket. Having told no one of my location, I knew this friend had no idea I had fled town for a time of respite and reflection. I answered and began to share just one thing we were battling, very much in need of God’s direction.

She responded, “Release it. Just release. You’ve done the work, now release it and let God handle the outcome.”

I wanted to argue. I wanted to share how unfair things seemed. I wanted to tell her she didn’t understand. But I couldn’t. I couldn’t because her words resonated with my heart. She offered words of wisdom that slowly dripped from my head to my heart, like traces of the tide on the sand upon which I walked.

We never got to the rest of life’s circumstances that were pummeling me from every side. It didn’t matter. The same words would apply: “Release it.”

The answer was to surrender.

I needed to release to God the possibility of cancer. Cancer is a little c, but Christ is a capital C, and God is more powerful than cancer.

I needed to release a potential career change. I didn’t know my future and what it held, but God knew my future and He declares that it includes a future and a hope.

I needed to release a child being bullied. God loves my child so much better than I, and He is a good father even when my own parental skills are lacking.

I needed to release another child’s uncertain future. We did our job as parents to raise him the best we could, in the knowledge of the Lord, and God would continue to guide him and direct him.

The things I needed to release felt as numerous as the grains of sand, yet I knew they all weighed me down, when Jesus wanted to lighten my load.

“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light’” (Matthew 11:28-30).

As tears flowed freely, I knew my friend was right. I needed to release it…release it all. But the question was how?

God confirmed her message in multiple ways during my time away, and the underlying message I kept receiving was, “I love you. I want you to trust me. Choose trust over worry, fear, and anxiety. It steals your peace and offers nothing good in return.”

I knew God was right. I had let worry, fear, and anxiety rule my heart. Fear and faith equally demand expression. We have a choice to choose fear or faith, but we can’t choose both. In surrendering my worries, fears, and anxieties, I consciously chose to trust God instead. And in doing so, I was washed in His peace. God had me, and he had everything that concerned me.

God has promised to be our defender, our fighter, our provider, our healer, our safe place of refuge, and so much more. When we will surrender our cares, worries, fears, and anxieties to Him, we are free to live in His peace and bring that peace with us into our homes, schools, work places, and to all those we encounter.

It can be as simple as praying, “Father, I’m tied up in knots. But you already have every answer I need. Please take these worries and concerns, and in their place grant me your wisdom and peace.” He wants to answer prayers like that!

What do you need God to be for you today? He is the great I AM. Will you release it, surrender, trust Him, and watch Him work on your behalf?

When we will surrender our fears, we are free to live in His peace.

This is What Sets You Apart

Here’s a question to consider: What sets you apart?

I met my husband when I was 40. At that point, I had not had a date in 10 years. On the day we met, I didn’t hear wedding bells or angels sing. It really wasn’t all that significant or memorable. I just decided to show up for an outreach our church was sponsoring to help a community nearby impacted by a tornado. I grabbed a rake and helped clean up yards while Bruce climbed up on a roof with a hammer. I ended up covered in dirt and exhausted, but it was good work. I was thankful to be able to encourage those families.

I ran into Bruce several weeks later in the back hallway between the bathrooms and the church banquet hall. He was joining another outreach team traveling to Mississippi to help hurricane victims. My work schedule did not allow me to attend, but I made it a point to let everyone in the group know I’d be praying for them.

The conversation probably lasted about 2 minutes. He smiled politely and replied, “Hey, thanks for praying.” And, he moved on his way.

Two years later, no one was more surprised than me when I got to wear a big white dress and walk down the aisle. If you ask my husband how we ended up together, he won’t tell you it’s the highlights in my hair or my manicured nails. He cares not about the shade of my lipstick or what perfume I wear.

Ask Bruce what inspired him to give up his old bachelor ways and purchase a very expensive diamond ring, and he will take you back to that two-minute conversation in that hallway.

He just kept thinking, “That girl. She prays.”

Esther stood out in a sea of women not because she was drop dead gorgeous, but because she was humble and teachable above all…

I’m sharing “This is What Sets You Apart” at Love God Greatly.

4 Ways to Love Deep in the Middle of a Conflict

His explosive tone of voice put me on edge. I asked him to adopt a kinder response, and he retorted with a sea of expletives. No matter how hard I try to avoid conflict with this person, a wide chasm of misunderstanding seems to separate us.

I got up from the comfortable chair and announced the visit was over. “I love you, but I must leave now. It is not right for you to reply with such unkind words.”

I picked up my things and walked out of that dark house.

On the way home, we bought chick fila as a consolation prize. I ordered a coke — because fizzly soda helps calm my nerves. I tuned in to the Christian radio station, and we turned our thoughts toward a more positive note.

You can cover me with rancor, but I will raise a hallelujah in return.

A broken soul can cut me to the quick, but I don’t have to let the wound stay open. I can apply the Gospel to my pain and persevere in grace.

I immediately texted several friends and asked them to pray for my prickly loved one. I made pointed efforts to love deep in the days that followed.

I chose to persist in loving this person not because I felt like it. I pressed in with God’s love because Jesus gave His all for me, and He calls me to wash dirty feet in His name.

Do you find it impossible to choose to be the bigger person and love deep in the middle of a conflict?  I get it.  It’s not easy to keep reaching out with wide-open arms when someone is holding up fists in your face.

God is pleased when we persevere in loving deep. He wants us to continue to pour His love over our prodigals, pesky neighbors, and persnickety family members.

Loving deep in hard spaces is sometimes the cross we must bear.

4 Ways to Love Deep in the Middle of a Conflict
Suffer with and Sustain with Support

God loves us at our darkest, and we are called to do the same. We can choose to affirm our affection for someone even when a prickly person is being disagreeable. Be the warrior who always stands in the gap in prayer and fights for the good. You might not love what someone says, but you can look beyond their words and speak life in return.

“Put up with one another. Forgive. Pardon any offenses against one another, as the Lord has pardoned you, because you should act in kind.” (Colossians 3:13, Voice)

Believe in the best

We can give our loved ones the benefit of the doubt whenever possible. Let’s keep the faith and not give way to cynicism or apathy. Trust that things are going to get better, and this is just a bump in the road you can patch up. Don’t get stuck in bitterness and purpose to move on to a more beautiful day. Pray through every sticky situation and stick with your people.

“Hatred keeps old quarrels alive, but love draws a veil over every insult and finds a way to make sin disappear.” (Proverbs 10:12, TPT)

Hope without Limit

No one is beyond hope. God can do anything, and He is still changing lives. Picture a beautiful redemption to come in your pesky loved one’s life. God has thoughts of peace toward this person, and Christ will never stop pursuing a lost soul.

“Here’s what I’ve learned through it all: Don’t give up; don’t be impatient; be entwined as one with the Lord. Be brave and courageous, and never lose hope. Yes, keep on waiting—for He will never disappoint you!” (Psalm 27:14, TPT)

Persevere through the Uncomfortable

When we realize how God has embraced us in our own brokenness, we are compelled to set aside our expectations for perfection in others. Love endures through the ugly. Never give up on someone and patiently speak the truth in love. It’s God’s kindness that leads people to change their stubborn ways, and so we must respond with compassion to win the war for their souls.

“With tender humility and quiet patience, always demonstrate gentleness and generous love toward one another, especially toward those who may try your patience.” (Ephesians 4:2, TPT)

Loving deep starts with letting God pour His love into us. As we expose our own hurts to the Lord and embrace His unconditional love, the Holy Spirit will fill our hearts up with everlasting love. (Romans 5:5)

To help remind you how much God loves you, I’ve created a beautiful list of 7 Scriptural promises for you to meditate on this week. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and  grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library. Print out your copy and start each morning letting God’s love wash over you as you worship the One who loves you most.

With God’s help, we can love deep and tear down those walls of discord. “Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” (I Corinthians 13:7, NLT).  Choosing to love is hard, but your sacrifice will bring healing. Stubborn hearts soften as we step forward with open hearts and arms outstretched. Love changes everything.

Choosing to love deep never fails to make a difference in a conflict.

When You Need to Know It Is Still Well with Your Soul

I’m running ragged this week. My nose is stuffy, and my voice sounds like an 80 year old man from all the coughing. But more than that, I am just tired. My soul is weary. I mean, I know it is technically supposed to be well with my soul, but I am just not feeling it.

I’m worn out from fighting battles that never seem to end. I’ve over extended myself trying to lift up people who don’t even want to be helped. My knees ache from bending down in the same spot every day as I cry out to God for a breakthrough.

Some days I wonder if all of my loving and praying and believing is making any difference at all.

My soul is heavy.

But then I remember I was never meant to carry all this weight. My job is not to change people or do the impossible. Only God can make dead things come back to life.

I just need to stop thinking “how am I going to fix this?”

What I really need to do is fix my eyes on God. That’s all the fixing I need to do.

When I stop holding on to the heavy weight of brokenness and hand it all up to Jesus, then my soul is light and free.

Friend, what are you carrying that needs to be presented at the altar? Maybe it’s your marriage or a prodigal child. Perhaps it’s your failing health or the lack of money in your bank account. Whatever burden your soul is carrying right now belongs at the foot of the cross. Just lay it down.

Jesus doesn’t want you to live weighed down by worry. Come what may, it can still be well with your soul if you surrender all into His hands.

Ask God to remind you it is well with your soul no matter what.

4 Ways It Is Still Well with Your Soul
You have received total forgiveness.

Every debt  you owe was nailed to to cross, and you are no longer captive to sin and shame. You can give yourself some grace because God has covered you with His compassion.

“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103:1-5, ESV)

You are reinvigorated with God’s strength.

Your weakness doesn’t mean you can’t make it. You have God’s overcoming power in your corner, and He will equip you with whatever you need to keep moving forward. Ask God to fill up that space in your empty soul with his supernatural courage and wisdom.

“At the very moment I called out to You, You answered me! You strengthened me deep within my soul and breathed fresh courage into me.” (Psalm 138:3, TPT)

You are restored through life-giving friendship.

Look around and link arms with your sisters in Christ. Jesus modeled community for us, and we should not do life alone. It’s not weakness to let people know you need encouragement and support. We find joy in the journey when we invite others in and ask them to keep us accountable. Pick up the phone and ask a a friend to pray for you today.

“Nothing is more appealing than speaking beautiful, life-giving words. For they release sweetness to our souls and inner healing to our spirits.” (Proverbs 16:24, TPT)

You can rejoice about your secure future.

This broken world is not your permanent address. You are headed to your eternal home, and you can hold your head up high. Jesus always wins the day, and your victory dance is coming. His redemptive plan is in place, and your Defender will restore everything out of order in the end.

“I’m happy from the inside out, and from the outside in, I’m firmly formed. You canceled my ticket to hell—that’s not my destination! Now you’ve got my feet on the life path, all radiant from the shining of your face. Ever since you took my hand, I’m on the right way.” (Psalm 16:10-11, MSG)

This week, you can still sing it is well with my soul and trust you stand secure.

To help you get started, I put together list of  “10 Verses to Help You Raise a Hallelujah.” Download a copy, print it out, and pray over one passage each morning for the next 10 days. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.

[image error]You are not fending for yourself in this world. You have a Heavenly Father who is fighting for you. Faith it until you feel it. Your soul knows right well that God is in control and will see you through this. Rest in His care and remember He will set everything right in the end.

Whatever you surrender to Jesus will create a space in your soul for others to see His glory spill out of your life. Your yielded life will show how saying yes to Jesus leads to true peace and lasting freedom.

Set your burden down at your Savior’s feet and believe it is still well with your soul.

When You Need to Raise a Hallelujah

Bruce and I slid quietly into the last row in the sanctuary just as the worship band started to sing.

My whole body felt on fire. I was sweating like I’d run a marathon, and I’m quite sure my blood pressure was through the roof.

The past 48 hours had aged me, and the world felt heavy.

I had no idea how we were going to make it through.

I’m just not strong enough. I can’t do this.

I sucked in a deep breath and started using the church bulletin like a fan to try to cool myself down.

Lord, I need you. I need you to come like the rain and cover me with a refreshing.

I closed my mind to everything around me and let the eyes of my heart look up to heaven as everyone around me sang. The words were hard to say, so at first, I just mouthed them. My soundless lips formed faith-filled phrases I desperately needed to hear.

I needed to raise a hallelujah.

Sometimes it hurts to say hallelujah. It’s hard when everywhere you look you see the fingerprints of a hellish plot to destroy you.

How can this be part of your plan for me, God? I just don’t understand why You allowed this.

Have you ever been there? Is your weary heart tired of trusting God because your dream is shattered into a million tiny pieces?

I get it. Really, I do.

Maybe God is waiting for you to look up and mouth a hard hallelujah. Maybe that’s where the healing begins.

Friend, God can but speak a word and create something out of nothing. Look all around you at the delicate flowers and leaves of grass. He orders everything beautifully.

And, He does not stand idly by and watch us weep. He wails with us. Our Savior is a Man of Sorrows. He took on flesh and gave all to set us free from this brokenness.

One day soon, God will wipe away every tear. No more death. No more defeat. No more oppression. Every obstacle will be removed.

Your Deliverer is sweetly singing salvation over your life.

Sometimes, our pain screams so loudly we just struggle to hear the rhythm of redemption that underscores everything we experience.

I have to believe there is a heavenly melody stronger than all the noise in this world.

For the last 4 months, I have whispered hallelujah in the darkness, and God has met me in the space between fear and faith.

I have forced my lips to form the word even when I wasn’t feeling it.

Hallelujah, today I get to breathe. Thank you, Jesus.

Hallelujah, Your mercies are new every morning. The sun will shine again.

Hallelujah, You bring dead things back to life.

Hallelujah, You are my Help. You are my hope. You are my healing.

I don’t know where you are standing right now, but God sees you. Your Abba Father knows your every heartache.

He longs to give you beauty for these ashes.

Maybe you aren’t ready to step into the sanctuary and sing hallelujah today, but God will meet you in a hallway. You can trust Him with your shattered heart.

Ask Him to help you whisper hallelujah.

4 Reasons You Need to Raise a Hallelujah
When you are knocked down by opposition, hallelujah helps you look to God who holds you up above your enemies.

The enemy of your soul wants to cover you in shame and fear, but God is the Lifter of your head. Shout unto the Lord with arms upraised right where you are, and the Lord will subdue the opposition and give you a firm place to stand.

“God holds me head and shoulders above all who try to pull me down. I’m headed for His place to offer anthems that will raise the roof! Already I’m singing God-songs; I’m making music to God.” (Psalm 27:6, MSG)

When you are overwhelmed with worry and doubt, praise elevates your spirit and drowns out the unbelief.

On those nights when the questions about “what if?” are cluttering up your mind, don’t let the enemy rent space in your head and rob you of much needed slumber.  Just say no to those questions and rehearse the truth. As you speak His name, declare He is good, and make melody in your heart, His peace will guard you and give you rest.

“I lie awake each night thinking of You and reflecting on how You help me like a Father. I sing through the night under Your splendor-shadow, offering up to You my songs of delight and joy! With passion I pursue and cling to You. Because I feel Your grip on my life, I keep my soul close to Your heart.” (Psalm 63:6-8, TPT)

When you lack strength to make decisions or take action, worship equips you with strength to lift up God’s Word like a weapon.

Remember the walls of Jericho fell as the people of God carried trumpets and kept marching. God will equip you for battle. Use whatever God has placed in your hand to praise Him, and you will see those strongholds come down.

“For He enjoys His faithful lovers. He adorns the humble with His beauty and He loves to give them the victory. His godly lovers triumph in the glory of God, and their joyful praises will rise even while others sleep. God’s high and holy praises fill their mouths, for their shouted praises are their weapons of war!” (Psalm 149:4-6, TPT)

When you feel vulnerable and defenseless, thanksgiving is a war cry proclaiming God fights your battles.

The God of Angel Armies will hear you shout His name and surround you with His protection. You have victory in Jesus, and no weapon formed against you shall prosper.

“But me? I will sing of Your strength. I will awake with the sun to sing of Your loving mercy. Because in my most troubled hour, You defended me. You were my shelter. I will lift my voice to sing Your praise, O my Strength—for You came to my defense. O God, You have shown me Your loving mercy.” (Psalm 59:16-17, VOICE)

Are you ready to raise a hallelujah?

To help you get started, I put together list of  “10 Verses to Help You Raise a Hallelujah.” Download a copy, print it out, and pray over one passage each morning for the next 10 days. Sign up today as a member of the Wildfire Faith Community and grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library.

As you whisper hallelujah right where you are today, you are encouraging the weary hearted  to turn to the God of hope for their salvation and strength. He alone is God, and He is worthy of our praise. He will give you a new song to sing as you raise a hallelujah, and everyone around you will watch in wonder. One glorious day, we will all stand together before the throne and sing holy, holy, holy.

Until then, may this lost world hear our praises roar and find redemption.

Raise a hallelujah even when it hurts, and you’ll start healing.

Raise a hallelujah even when it hurts, and you’ll start healing.

How to Speak Life on Social Media

Every few months, I am tempted to delete all my social media accounts. The negative energy overwhelms me. Facebook starts to suck my joy away – it is such a time waster. I grow tired of scrolling through superficial Instagram selfies and beat myself up for not having a Pinterest perfect life. Social media can be a breeding ground for dissatisfaction. People inappropriately “overshare” intimate details of their personal lives, and brutal wars are waged by friends with differing political ideologies. I want to return to the quiet days of reading a book and listening to music. Why can’t we just all get along?

But, before I hit the delete button on my social media life, God usually sends me a reminder. He whispers quietly to my heart, “My daughter, you are called to be a light in a dark place.”

Those broken people on social media are hurting, and I have a sure hope in Jesus to share with them. I can use my facebook feed to connect with people who have serious questions about life and faith. I can communicate foundational truths from Scripture and offer hope and healing to a lost soul.

Now instead of wasting time on social media, I log on purposefully to speak life.

Friends, Jesus is the Word made flesh. His mighty name is life and peace even on Facebook. He speaks and the storm of negative words in our newsfeeds must obey. The Lord wants to bring redemption through us on social media.

Let’s pause and pray before we post so that we use our words wisely…

I’m sharing “How to Speak Life on Social Media” at Love God Greatly today.
