Book Review – Always Mine by Kevin Singer

AlwaysMine_final

YA Paranormal/Thriller

Published December 14, 2013

Ever read the one about a boy, a girl, his dog, and her ghost?

Always Mine follows Danny and his dog during the summer they meet Tina, the mysterious and alluring neighbor with a Ouija board and a malevolent ghost named Gustav.

These four collide and the result is gripping. Trust me when I say you will not put this book down until the end.

Danny’s journey with Tina is the book’s central story, a poignant tale of young love, but I found Mr. Singer’s exploration of Danny’s relationships with his mother – positively frightening – and his dog – absolutely heartbreaking – to be even more compelling. A great read for teens and adults alike, you cannot go wrong by opening up this little book and getting lost in Danny’s world for a bit.

So snag a copy, enjoy this little thrill of a tale, and discover for yourself why Kevin Singer is one of Jersey City’s finest.

Dev + Wyatt = TLF

It’s funny – I just realized that The Sanctum is full of couples, from the very twisted and sick Ava and Carter Breslin to the insanely hot and sexy Abha and Darby. But easily my favorite couple is Dev and Wyatt. I love them. Her ferocity, his quiet devotion – they’re perfect for each other.

And now my friend, Hana, has taken her mighty paint brush and captured them better than I could have ever expected.

Check them out – how can you not love them?

My One Year Blogiversary

I received a notification from WordPress this morning, congratulating me on my one year blogiversary and all I could think was “Really? It’s been that long already?”

quotescover-JPG-56

I remember when I considered starting a blog and the dread it inspired in the pit of my stomach. Why would anyone want to read my blog? What would I write about? Where would I find the time to draft posts? Why couldn’t I just focus on writing The Sanctum and leave the blogging to the bloggers?

A year later, I have moments where I wish I could crawl into a shell and just focus on The Sanctum and there are days where I still don’t know if anyone wants to read my posts but that’s okay because I’m just having so much fun with this thing. I had no idea blogging could be such a blast and a year later, if someone told me I could become a blogger for a living, I would do so in a heartbeat.

So let’s celebrate this one year blogiversary in one of my favorite ways to get down – in pictures.

Outsider – Niko and Songhay Character Interview and Excerpt

Last week I posted my review of Outsider, Kayti Nika Raet’s latest installment in her series, The Outsider Chronicles.

OutsiderCover

This week I’ve been lucky enough to snag a sit-down with my favorite characters from the series, Niko and Songhay.

As I’m putting the finishing touches on this, I realize that if I wanted to make life really interesting, and possibly a little uncomfortable, I would have invited Ben to this little get-together. Alas, I was not so forward-thinking…and Ben would have probably said no anyway.

But I digress.

And these two are getting a little restless so let’s do this already.

Full name: Harmony Ann Niko and Songhay Miller

Age: 18 and 19

Occupation: Slither Hunters (Order of the Black Rose), with many forays of the revolutionary sort.

First off, how are you?

Niko: I’m fine. It feels odd taking time off to talk incessantly about myself. There is still so much that needs to be done.

Songhay: Yeah, she really didn’t want to come, but I’m used to these kind of things. Thank you for inviting both of us. Now I get to learn some new things about her.

Can you tell us a little about Outsider?

Niko: Outsider is when we finally decide to take control of the city and change things. Hopefully we can make things better for the Grey-men and people living in the slums. For everyone really.

Songhay: It’s also when she finally admits that she likes me.

Niko: …

Niko: I don’t think that’s how you were supposed to answer the question, Songhay.

Songhay: I’m sure they were curious.

What’s the deal with the water?

Niko: The water was poisoned after a mistake was made when we tried to kill off Slithers once and for all. I’ve heard that it is less potent than it was in the beginning. Maybe in a few decades it will be clean again but for now it has to be treated before it’s drinkable.

Songhay: It’s the center of everything in this world

And the Slithers?

Niko: Slithers. Ugh.

Songhay: Slithers are kind of interesting actually. They look like us but they’re not. No one knows where they come from or how many there actually are. How are they created? Do they even breed…

Niko: Stop talking. Right now. I don’t want to think about Slithers having sex.

Songhay: There’s a lot of unanswered question, but I think we’ll find out more about them soon.

And Alice?

Niko: I don’t think she’s deliberately a bad person even if she is shockingly self-centered. To show even an ounce of vulnerability in the Greenery is dangerous. I think there’s a lot she doesn’t let people see because it doesn’t fit with the persona she’s trying to project. Right, Songhay? You said she was interesting.

Songhay: I didn’t think you’d remember that. She’s interesting in that she wants to be seen a certain way but she’s also looking for someone to see her as she truly is. She probably hates that we’re talking about her right now.

Niko: Probably.

Ok, so which is it – Niko or Harm?

Niko: It’s Niko, everyone calls me Niko except for my brother. Out in the slums, I didn’t want the Council to find me so I went by Harm. There was no real thought to it, I just broke off the last part of my name.

Songhay: Maybe I should start doing that, Niko. How about I go by Song from now on? What do you think?

Niko: No. I’ve heard you sing before.

Songhay: Really? You heard me sing? And I thought no one had been listening…

Niko: …

Songhay: …

Niko: Don’t go by Song. I like Songhay better.

Share something with us that the other does not know about you.

Songhay: I THOUGHT she didn’t know about my singing, but I just recently found out she’s been spying on me.

Niko: I wasn’t spying on him. I was in the area and happened to find out that he couldn’t sing.

Songhay: And here I was thinking I had discovered a new career option.

Niko: I think you should stick to hunting Slithers for now.

Songhay: And now that we’re done avoiding the question… Tell me your secret.

Niko: It’s not a secret.

Songhay: But you’re avoiding it. Which is only going to make me more interested, and must mean it’s about me.

Niko: It’s not about you at all.

Songhay: Really? Then tell me. What don’t I know about you?

Niko: I like to paint. I haven’t done it since we left Amaryllis City though. How’s that?

Songhay: Maybe you should pick it up again.

Niko: Maybe.

Songhay: I still think you have a secret about me.

Niko: I don’t.

If it’s true that “we don’t always get what we want”, then what’s next? What do we wind up with instead?

Songhay: Then we have to make a choice. Either we’re going to settle and tell ourselves that that is enough, or we’re going to fight for it, even if the odds are against us, because we can’t see ourselves living with anything else. Fighting is the scarier option, we’re fighting with the very weapons that if we lose, have the ability to tear us apart.

Niko: But that’s only if our wants are completely binary, having versus not having. What we want more than one thing? What if we want them both equally and for different reasons? What if having one thing feels like losing the other? What if you’re selfish?

Songhay: Is it selfish to do something that will make you happy when it makes others happy too?

Niko: I don’t know if that would make everybody happy.

Songhay: I guess in the end, you can only do what’s right for you. Whatever the consequences.

And finally, a little Proustian back-and-forth for both of you:

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

Niko:

Songhay: I like it when things aren’t quite perfect. That makes it interesting.

Niko: Being in someone’s arms, knowing that you’re completely safe with them.

What is your current state of mind?

Niko: Torn

Songhay: Determined

What is your most treasured possession?

Niko: A secret written on a piece of paper.

Songhay: Three words said in a hospital.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

Songhay: I think you guys already know the answer to that one.

When and where were you the happiest?

Niko: I don’t think I’ve reached that point yet. Not truly.

Songhay: Under the willow tree, when I had a knife to my throat.

Niko: I would think that’s something more scary than happy.

Songhay: Maybe at first, but it turned out all right in the end.

What is it that you most dislike?

Niko: Lies.

Songhay: Arrogance.

Niko: But you’re arrogant.

Songhay: We both are, but we don’t think that gives us the right to lord it over everybody else. We know what we’re good at and don’t see any need to hide it.

What is your greatest fear?

Niko: That I’ll lose the people closest to me.

Songhay: Same. I’ve already lost enough.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Songhay: After my first fight I brought my sister, Roosevelt, a ton of food and we ate until we were sick.

Niko: When I managed to buy a dragon made of sugar for my younger brother, Jared.

What is your greatest regret?

Niko: That I never thought to ask my parents about their past.

Songhay: That I thought becoming a fighter was the only way to save my sister.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

Niko: Losing everyone.

Songhay: Not being able to protect those I care about.

What is the quality you most like in a man?

Niko: The ability to push me to be more than myself.

What is the quality you most like in a woman?

Songhay: Passion. A woman who’s passionate can do anything she sets her mind to.

Niko: Intelligence.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

Niko: Lying.

Songhay: When people think that you’re too stupid to notice that they’re screwing you over.

What do you most value in your friends?

Niko: Honesty. I prefer a truth that might hurt me over a lie said to protect me.

Songhay: Honesty, but I understand why people sometimes lie.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

Niko: Friendliness. It’s been my experience that people are only friendly when they want something from you.

Songhay: Acquiescence. When it’s done merely to please people or avoid conflict.

How would you like to die?

Niko: Not by a Slither. I want it to end suddenly, and before everyone else. My mother died slowly, whittled away over the years by something none of us had the power to fix.

Songhay: Definitely, not by a Slither. Of old age and after everyone has accepted that it’s time.

If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be?

Niko: Hm, that sounds hard. I think I might want to come back as a thing. Something uncomplicated, that knows its purpose.

Songhay: This might seem corny, but as someone or something she can treasure. I think if I could do that I would be really happy.

You like them, non?

Want a little more of Niko and Songhay? Read the following excerpt from Outsider:

Standing together in the suddenly quiet living room Songhay chuckled nervously. “If Jared hadn’t gone with them I would think Ben was about twenty seconds away from being murdered.”

She went over to the window and peeked out. The street was empty, if someone was watching them it was from nowhere she could see. “He’s a bit gruff but I think we can trust him.”

“You should be careful about him.”

“Who? Abraham?” She shook her head, giving him an amused smile. “Didn’t you hear what I just said?”

The darkness had made his features almost indistinguishable but she could see that he hadn’t returned her smile. “I wasn’t talking about Abraham.”

Amusement disappeared in an instant. She walked away, navigating through the dangerous jungle of furniture and birdcages shrouded in darkness.

“We should go through the back door,” she said. “We’ll attract less attention that way.”

He followed behind her, navigating through the house much better than she had. “Harm,” he said. He grabbed her arm, pulling her to a halt. “Harm, listen. I lived outside of Cherai nearly my whole life and even though it’s nothing like living in the city you still hear things about the people who live in this neighborhood. Especially about the Kings, about how powerful they are, and the things they do to stay that way. They say that he killed his brother to inherit.”

Her breath caught in her throat. She closed her eyes, blocking out the hallway, the furniture and Songhay’s warm hand around her arm.

Ben did have a twin brother named William, a brother who he barely talked about. He also had a picture of him but Ben usually took it away whenever he found her looking at it. It was obviously something he wasn’t ready to talk about and she refused to pry.

She shook off Songhay’s grip. “Rumors, Songhay. You’re giving me rumors. And we’re both Outsiders so you know what I think about those.”

He slipped his hands behind his neck, knitting his fingers together. “Just be careful. I don’t think you know him as well as you think you do.”

If she was being honest she didn’t know either of them that well and the recent revelation about her parents had taught she should never assume she knew anything about anybody. She didn’t say any of that out loud.

“I’ll be careful.”

He bit his lower lip. He looked as though he’d been hoping she would say something else.

“We should probably go,” she said softly. “It’s been longer than five minutes.”

He kissed her.

It wasn’t like the last time, when he had killed a Slither for the first time and tasted of victory, triumph and arrogance. This time as he gently cupped her face all she tasted was sadness.

“I’m better for you,” he said into her ear.

“I know.” They were similar. Similar backgrounds, similar ways of viewing the world. He even managed to slip past the walls she had erected around herself. “But…”

He made a sound, a laugh tangled in a sigh, both falling in disappointment. “Of course.”

He stepped away from her, shoving his hands into his pockets. “Forget I said anything.”

She wanted to reach out to him. Outside as a fighter he had been undefeated but now in the city he had lost two fights in one day. She kept her hands by her side, there was nothing more she could say.

You need this book – this series – in your life. It’s original, exciting, poignant, and sexy.

And it has Songhay.

Book III: A Snippet

I haven’t posted anything about Book III in a while. Since July to be exact. Nor have I posted here in a few days as I was suffering through a killer migraine. Do you get those? Good lord, they are something wicked. I haven’t had one in months and this baby was a doozie. One day I was fine, the next not so good.

And I felt it creeping up on me.

Fellow sufferers, you know what I’m talking about. That dull throb. Mine usually begins on my right eyebrow, ever so slight, but hella noticeable. So yeah, I felt it, but honestly, I had no idea it would turn into the beast it became, roiling my stomach while my head felt like a jackhammer was pounding it, day in and day out.

Thank goodness I was able to sit in my office with the lights out for a few days because otherwise, I would not have made it. Anyway, that’s the long version of explaining why I haven’t blogged or written much the last few days.

So I figured this morning, as I sat in my kitchen, drinking my coffee, listening to The Kid play Wii basketball, and thanking the lucky stars that fucking headache had relented, it was the perfect time to post a snippet.

I know, I know, it’s a lazy blog post, but at least it’s something.

So here you go…enjoy.

RYKER CROP orange crop WYATT CROP

Dev started to speak but stopped as the front door shook with one loud bang and then opened. Asher, who had been sleeping peacefully on the living room couch, took off running down the hallway and seconds later, Ryker walked into the kitchen as if he owned the place, making a beeline for the coffee pot.

“Morning Clayworth,” he yawned as he rubbed Asher behind the ears, grabbed a coffee cup and glanced at Dev, “and good morning to you, Hot Stuff.”

“Good morning, Ryker,” Dev smiled, somewhat amused by Ryker’s nickname for her, always pleased by his presence.

Taking a seat across the island, Ryker reached for the Sports section and flipped to the baseball rankings while Asher curled up on the floor at his feet. Wyatt shot Asher a dirty look as he passed, taking a seat next to Dev, watching Ryker for a second before grabbing the paper’s Metro section.

“Make yourself at home, why don’t you,” Wyatt smirked as he scanned the front page.

“This coffee is bangin’,” Ryker ignored Wyatt’s comment, catching his best friend’s eye and winking, “it’s gotta be Dev’s handiwork because we both know Clayworth’s coffee tastes like ass.”

Dev laughed. Wyatt’s coffee was undrinkable.

“Ha, ha,” Wyatt chimed in, “keep it up and I’ll start locking the front door.”

Ryker’s head shot up, his eyes full of amused shock.

“You would not break my heart like that.”

“And stop flirting with the dog,” Wyatt replied, “he’s mine.”

Ryker laughed and glanced at Asher, fast asleep at his feet. “You sure about that, because he’s looking pretty pleased with me right about now.”

“Don’t mess with the dog, Ryker,” Dev shook her head, “he gets real funky about that dog.”

“Hey,” Wyatt protested, “that dog loved me when no one else would.”

Dev’s eyes shot wide open and she leaned back in shock, pushing Wyatt and laughing. “That is so not fair.”

“Don’t be lumping me in with her, Clayworth,” Ryker pointed at Dev, “I didn’t know you were alive.”

“Ryker!” Dev laughed, “shut up.”

“It’s true,” Ryker continued, “I already told him he should have fallen in love with me over you. Instead, he gets all caught up in the long hair and big eyes, the lips and whatnot.”

“The ‘whatnot’?” Dev asked, her brow raised.

“Yeah, you know,” Ryker started to explain, then hesitated when he caught sight of Wyatt warning him to stop while he was ahead. Appreciating the head’s up, Ryker nonetheless continued his explanation, gesturing towards his chest and hips, “the girlie parts. Crap I can’t compete with. Boobs, ass, that kind of junk.”

“You cannot imagine how pleased I am to hear myself reduced to the stuff that really counts,” Dev shot back, amused if not a tad bit annoyed.

“Hot Stuff,” Ryker practically purred as he continued scanning the baseball standings, “don’t be getting your panties all in a knot. You know I know you’re a brilliant badass.”

Dev rolled her eyes and went back to her newspaper.

“No one’s panties are in a knot,” she mumbled.

Wyatt grinned and pulled her to him, planting a coffee-flavored kiss on her lips. “I rather like your girlie parts.”

Dev sat up and pushed Wyatt away from her, then pulled him close and kissed him again.

“Come on. Hey, hey,” Ryker grimaced as he watched the couple, “get a room already.”

“Said the guy who invaded our space,” Wyatt replied as he pushed away from the island and made for the fridge in search of some breakfast, “why are you here anyway? Isn’t my sister back?”

“Yeah, she’s back,” Ryker replied from deep within the pages of the International section, “got back late last night but she’s avoiding me. Thinks I’m going to ask about the wolf.”

Casting The Sanctum Trilogy – Darby Winthrop

This is for my girlfriend, Bekah, who’s not feeling too well this morning, so I thought a little game of Casting The Sanctum would take her mind off her yucky belly.

Last night while some of us were yacking about my choice for Ryker, a conversation started about Darby and Jools and who would I post about next. Bekah made a request for Darby and then proceeded to send me her casting choice: Kiernan “Kiki” Shipka.

KiernanDarby.2 KiernanDarby

Dammit, Bekah, that’s good.

I’m tempted…

almost.

But I’m sticking with my girl, Dakota Fanning.

Since the beginning, that very first scene where the reader meets Darby as she spies on Wyatt, Ryker, and Jools as they leave that bar, I’ve had a very distinct idea of Darby, her personality, and her appearance. And I think she’s Dakota Fanning all the way. Childlike features in a very tiny body but a very otherworldly, adult sense of self.

Darby Darby.3 Darby.2

For me, Fanning’s the perfect package. That, plus it would be fun watching her capture all of Darby’s ever-changing moods and indulging in the vampire’s lust for both life and death. That character would be all kinds of fun to play, if I may say so myself.

Random Darby fact: her full name is Eudora “Darby” Cordelia Winthrop. Even her name screams Dakota Fanning.

Holla.

Casting The Sanctum Trilogy – Ryker, Part II

Over the last few weeks I’ve been indulging my inner pop culture whore and casting The Sanctum Trilogy as if the movie is in the works and all of Hollywood is at my beck and call.

Dev is going to be played by Lupita Nyong’o because I’m sure she’s free and just dying to play a badass hybrid demon and Wyatt will be none other than Nicholas Hoult, mostly because he’s tall and hot and I loved him in “About a Boy.”

So now we’re up to Ryker, Wyatt’s best friend and The Sanctum’s most gifted, and most troubled, warrior. He’s smart, funny, charming, and damn does he know his way around a woman’s body.

I had some very interesting suggestions for Ryker, from Chris Brochu (really, Denise?) to Shemar Moore (this one makes me laugh – it’s like Halle playing Dev). My friend, Steph, suggested The Orginals’ Charles Michael Davis, who up until a couple of weeks ago was also my choice for Ryker. Every time I saw him, I thought of Ryker.

That is until I randomly came across Nathan Owens.

Whoa.

Really, I needn’t say more.

I just hope he can act, because he’s kind of cute. And totally Ryker.

Holla.

Book Review – Outsider by Kayti Nika Raet

OUTSIDER

YA Dystopia

Published: September 22, 2014

If you’ve been following my book reviews, then you know I’m kind of in love with Kayti Nika Raet’s* unique, fast-paced, thrilling series The Outsider Chronicles.

I read NIKO and promptly fell in love with a badass girl and her killer baseball bat. Then I snagged HARM and fell even harder for Songhay. And now I’ve read OUTSIDER twice.

Oh yeah, you read that right. Twice, bitches, cuz it’s just that good.

OUTSIDER is the third cycle in Raet’s The Outsider Chronicles and I have to say, it’s her best so far. The novel represents a two-fold evolution: Raet’s prowess as a writer and her main character Niko’s growth as a woman. The rhythm of the novel feels almost languid compared to the first two books and this is a good thing, as it is perfectly pitched to Niko’s state of mind: contemplative, distraught, conflicted, determined.

The story opens with Songhay and Niko entering Cherai city as Grey-men, the drugged slaves working within the city walls. Quickly reuniting with Ben, Jared, and their allies, the group plot to free the Grey-Men and wrest control of the city’s water supply, thus revolutionizing the lives of many.

And that’s about all I’m going to say about the plot.

Actually, I lied. I’ve got one more thing to say about the plot: there are Slithers. Of course there are Slithers. Freaking nasty pieces of work which, by the way, are becoming smarter by the day. Dudes are talking and strategizing.

Shit’s about to get real up in here.

As always, Raet delivers with the action as her crew battle Slithers and race to gain control of the water supply. This is where Raet excels and seems quite at ease as a writer – girlfriend knows her way around a deadly fight. Where she surprises the reader and proves her writing skill are the moments of quiet reflection, tenderness, and despair. Her love triangle is fraught with wonder, surprise, and awe; her lovers are wrapped in a bittersweet, ever-encroaching anguish. Their kisses are full of tightly-wound sexual tension, released sparingly and with such effect the reader can almost feel a brush of lips along a clavicle and a touch along a hip.

It’s sexy and sweet and sad.

And then there’s Songhay.

About him, all I’m going to say is this: “we don’t always get what we want.”

Go buy the book. Now. I’m not playing. Snag a copy this minute. You can thank me later.

HOLLA.

*Full disclosure, Kayti and I have become friends ever since she reviewed THE GIRL, interviewed me, and then I reviewed NIKO. But seriously, that matters little. This series is fierce and I would not lead you astray. Also, Kayti and I don’t have one of those relationships where we are afraid to call each other out on the not-so-good-stuff in our work. I’ve criticized her spelling errors and she’s been honest about parts of my books she doesn’t like. Which is another way of saying I’m not sitting here, sugar-coating shit to make Kayti feel good. I mean, yeah, she’s probably feeling good right about now as she reads this review, but she earned it.

This. Book. Rocks.

Book Review: Harm by Kayti Nika Raet

20691186

YA Dystopia

Published January 13, 2014

HARM is the fast-paced, thoroughly engrossing second installment in Kayti Nika Raet’s The Outsider Chronicles and picks up right where NIKO left off, leading readers through the stressful twists and turns of Niko’s journey after her narrow escape from Amaryllis City.

Traveling with Ben and her brother, with hopes of making it to Ben’s hometown of Cherai City, the trio encounter all sorts of obstacles prior to their arrival at the city gates, only to be turned away without a thought when they fail to produce the requisite entry fee. Deciding their best chance to get inside is to split up, Niko goes it alone on the outside, traversing the slums, encountering evil gangs, unscrupulous boot-sellers (trust me, you need some boots!) and finally meeting Songhay, a mysterious boy with some serious fighting skills. Songhay saves Niko, now calling herself Harm, from a rather horrible situation and together with Songhay’s sister, Roosevelt, the trio learn to (kind of) trust one another and survive.

As exciting and unique as the first installment in the series, NIKO, I especially enjoyed Harm because of the character Songhay. He is the one person in Niko’s life who seems to soften her a bit, humanize her in ways that not even her brother, Jared, can. I have no idea whether Songhay will play a more important role in Niko’s journey, but I do appreciate his ability to get under Niko’s skin and peel away a bit of the cold, calculated veneer she shows the rest of the world. (And I know Niko needs to be cold and calculated to survive this deadly landscape of acid rain, Slithers and corrupt individuals at every corner, but it’s nice to see there is someone with whom she can let down her guard and genuinely smile, even if it’s only for a moment.)

As with NIKO, Harm is action-packed, full of exciting fight scenes, witty banter and general feats of Niko-badassery. Fans of the first book will not be disappointed with Harm, as Raet continues weaving her web of intrigue around Niko. This original, engrossing, quick read takes you on one hell of a ride, leaving you wondering what secrets book three will uncover and expose, and hopeful Niko’s soul can survive them.

So what are you waiting for? Grab a copy, fix yourself a drink, and settle in for this wildly entertaining, second installment of The Outsider Chronicles.

Holla bitches.
