Random Thoughts
1. I love Posh. I mean, come on. That leg. How can you not?
2. I also love Chicago but while I was out there for The Kid’s spring break, it was fucking cold those first few days. I couldn’t help but dream of the beach. Of course, meeting The Edibles, my insanely cute niece and nephew, warmed even my cold, dark heart. I’m not the most baby-friendly person, but those two are so damn delicious, it’s hard to keep your hands off them. (And sorry, I’m not including pictures of them because they’re not my kids and I don’t want my sister and BIL to kick my ass for possible misappropriation of all that cuteness, just trust when I say you probably haven’t seen a more nibble-worthy duo. Ever.)

3. I’ve always thought Jeffrey Dean Morgan is sexy but holy fuck he does something to me as Negan. Holy fuck.
4. This is quickly devolving into the celebrity version of Random Thoughts but who cares? Every so often one is allowed to salivate over some famous folk, especially if they’re named Matt. As in Matt Damon. As in my other problem, the one that’s not named Rihanna. I mean, come on, he’s freaking Jason Bourne. Can you blame me?
Also, that Jason Bourne trailer is. the. shit.
5. I had an amazing writing moment this week. I was working on a chapter in JUMA told from Juma’s POV and it was the first time I’d written her in a while and it’s a major chapter for her so I was kind of worried about getting it just right so I was thinking about it for a second, going over all the ways to approach it, and finally told myself, “self, shit or get off the pot,” and started writing. An hour later I looked up from the screen to take a breather and realized I had been so deep into my works, like really up in them, kind of lost, that I had no clear idea of what I’d put down on the paper. Which is both scary and amazing. And this time I’m happy to report, I come down on the amazing side of things because that chapter I wrote, while “in the zone”, holy fuck it is brilliant. I can’t wait to share it.
6. This was my birthday week and I say week because I’ve been celebrating all damn week. I’m normally not so energized about my birthday – it’s just another day of my life – but this year I felt the need to treat myself and so that’s what I’ve been doing. It began with my fabulous college roommate coming into town with gifts of tequila and a personal and perfect flask, because she knows me like that, to a poetry reading at Bowery Poetry Club’s open mic night to David Gandy and blueberry pancake cakes to breakfast at Bubby’s on a weekday with my favorite girl, ordering coffee with a side of tequila, acting like we’re two rich bitches without a care in the world. It’s been fun and I’ve been happy but now it’s time to get back at it, meet these daily word counts, and finish this book. Welcome to the #writelife, I believe they call this #livingthedream.
7. Also, in case I didn’t say it, my friends are the best. The Best. Every girl should be surrounded by as much love as I am – I feel ridiculously lucky to have them in my life. That is all.
#NationalPoetryMonth – Day 28

ON ART AND PROSE
words flow off
my tongue with you
chats deep into the night
blossom without
care or concern
tiny truths are
easily shared
laughter pools
at our feet
soaks our toes
kisses our ankles
while underneath and
above and all around
is the palpable
thrum of desire
for art and prose
and each other
kiss me now
leave me free
learn me forever
April is National Poetry Month and to celebrate – inspired by that badass word warrior Jason Reynolds and my writing promptress Jena Schwartz – I’m going to post a poem every day. These pieces won’t be perfect, they never are, but they’ll be here, every day of April. I hope you stop by and enjoy the words and maybe even feel moved to share some of your own.

Work In Progress
Late last year I started thinking about ways I can step outside my comfort zone and really live life to the fullest. It’s so rare to get a second chance to find yourself be yourself enjoy yourself and since I’m getting one, I want to make sure I do as much as I can to really make it count.
Hence the poetry readings I’ve started doing every week. So far I’ve hit the stage in Jersey City, Chicago, and as of last night, I can officially add NYC to my list.
I said for my 45th birthday I was going to do the open mike at the Bowery Poetry Club and despite being scared shitless and totally nervous, but also mad excited, I did it. Around 8:03 pm I was called up to the stage to read the last poem of the evening.
Check it out:
I’m getting better at this, non?
Either way, it was a stellar way to celebrate 45 years of being on this planet – thanks Bowery Poetry and my good friends Patty, Destiny, and Meisha for coming out to show me some love.

#NationalPoetryMonth – Day 25

FOOD OF LOVE – a Wednesday Free Write
feed me freedom
she whispered
I need to know
I can come and go
as I please
when I want
and you won’t despair
my absence
you won’t fear
my disappearance
you will understand
the food of love
is a meal
best eaten
with a smile in my eyes
laughter on our tongues
and kisses made of honey
I will indulge your
every desire
to drift and roam
he replied
I will gather carpets of stars
and blankets of moonbeams
for the nights you are gone
I will wash well-trodden paths
and chop treacherous terrain
for a soup to nourish
your meandering soul
I will milk the heavens
and knead the canyons
to bake your
wanderlust bread
so long as you allow me
to fall in love with you
he promised
I will feed you freedom
wrapped in parchment paper
and tied with a string
please
she replied
her voice a low growl
of lust and desire
fall head over heels for me
make me fat
with your love
then set me free
I promise to return

It’s also my birthday today so it’s quite fitting that this poem is one about love and freedom – a most necessary duo. BEHOLDER
her eyes
saw exhaustion
late nights
bags and dark circles
his eyes
saw beauty
intelligence
depth and mischief
you made me
look so pretty
she exclaimed
as she studied the photo
amazed and awed
I did nothing
of the sort
he replied
that part
is all you

#NationalPoetryMonth – Day 23

NARCISSISM or
SOME BOYS
news flash
a quick hello
good luck
be magic
means just that
I don’t speak in code
you needn’t read
between the lines
it is what it is
nothing more
nothing less
perhaps you should
get over yourself
I know I have
