An Independent, Katya Mills is an American and nonbinary writer of German and Huguenot (French Protestant) descent. They grew up in New England, mostly in New Hampshire, the 'Live Free or Die' state. They studied at Northwestern University and spent about a decade in Chicago before settling in California. Mills is a licensed psychotherapist and helps people imagine, envision and reauthor the stories of their lives. Mills writes creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and has a lifelong obsession with words. The stories they create often involve marginalized characters who have been somehow reduced or overlooked and, in turn, they have exiled or overlooked themselves. Lovers, dreamers, loners, addicts, scribblers, and latchkey kids. Adventures ...more

I confess I am beat up, not so proud, not so smart as I once was, quite shredded from those years of rushing toward danger, trying to see how I match up against things much bigger. I know how to love and be loved. That is enough. I found my place in the world.  #katyamills

In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
"I feel like this book has been on my TBR list forever!!
I finally got around to reading it and it didn’t disappoint.
The story of the senseless slaying of the Clutter family is told to us in that inimitable Capote way, and is so well researched and wr" Read more of this review »

“It's a god-eat-god world" - katya”
Katya Mills

“Now I happened to be there, in the chewy maelstrom of his life, by his side. He taught me how to live in this fucked up environment. East Oakland. How to deal with the people. Which ones to avoid. The new currency was trading out what you have for what you need. And then maybe trading up for what you want. The new time was not told by the sun. Light or no light, we lived as things happened. I would soon realize there was no other way.”
Katya Mills, Grand Theft Life

“poisoning the environment by the littering of consequence.”
Katya Mills, Grand Theft Life

“Negative words other than not are usually strong:”
William Strunk Jr., The Elements Of Style

“None of us really changes over time. We only become more fully what we are.”
Anne Rice, The Vampire Lestat

Thomas Mann

“Always mystify, torture, mislead, and surprise the audience as much as possible.”
Don Roff
