I grew up in Ireland, in a house that was filled with books. Not surprisingly, I’ve been an avid reader ever since I was a kid. I did a bit of writing in my teens but, since I also had an interest in science, I studied botany, going on to do a doctorate.

For most of my career, I worked in the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Irish Government’s nature conservation wing. My work concerned rare plants and the protection of areas important for wildlife. It took me all around the country and occasionally abroad, including many trips to Brussels.
