Ghassan Kanafani was a Palestinian journalist, fiction writer, and a spokesman for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. Kanafani died at the age of 36, assassinated by car bomb in Beirut, Lebanon.
Ghassan Fayiz Kanafani was born in Acre in Palestine (then under the British mandate) in 1936. His father was a lawyer, and sent Ghassan to a French missionary school in Jaffa. During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Kanafani and his family fled to Lebanon, but soon moved on to Damascus, Syria, to live there as Palestinian refugees.
After studying Arabic literature at the University of Damascus, Kanafani became a teacher at the Palestinian refugee camps in Syria. In 1960 he moved to Beirut, Lebanon, where he became the editor of several newspapers, all with an Arab nationalist affiliation. In Beirut,
published the novel Men in the Sun (1962). He published extensively on literature and politics, focusing on the the Palestinian liberation movement and the refugee experience, as well as engaging in scholarly literary criticism, publishing several books about post-1948 Palestinian and Israeli literature.

غسان كنفاني (عكا 1936 - بيروت 8 يوليو 1972) روائي وقاص وصحفي فلسطيني تم اغتياله على يد جهاز المخابرات الإسرائيلية (الموساد) في 8 يوليو 1972 عندما كان عمره 36 عاما بتفجير سيارته في منطقة الحازمية قرب بيروت. كتب بشكل أساسي بمواضيع التحرر الفلسطيني، وهو عضو المكتب السياسي لجبهة الشعبية لتحرير فلسطين. في عام 1948 أجبر وعائلته على النزوح فعاش في سوريا كلاجىء فلسطيني ثم في لبنان حيث حصل على الجنسية اللبنانية. أكمل دراسته الثانوية في دمشق وحصل على شهادة البكالوريا السورية عام 1952. في ذات العام تسجل في كلية الأدب العربي في جامعة دمشق ولكنه انقطع عن الدراسة في نهاية السنة الثانية، انضم إلى حركة القوميين العرب التي ضمه اليها جورج حبش لدى لقائهما عام 1953.

ذهب إلى الكويت حيث عمل في التدريس الابتدائي، ثم انتقل إلى بيروت للعمل في مجلة الحرية (1961) التي كانت تنطق باسم الحركة مسؤولاً عن القسم الثقافي فيها، ثم أصبح رئيس تحرير جريدة (المحرر) اللبنانية، وأصدر فيها (ملحق فلسطين) ثم انتقل للعمل في جريدة الأنوار اللبنانية وحين تأسست الجبهة الشعبية لتحرير فلسطين عام 1967 قام بتأسيس مجلة ناطقة باسمها حملت اسم "مجلة الهدف" وترأس غسان تحريرها، كما أصبح ناطقا رسميا باسم الجبهة الشعبية لتحرير فلسطين.

تزوج من سيدة دانماركية (آن) ورزق منها ولدان هما فايز وليلى. أصيب مبكرا بمرض السكر. ترجمت معظم أعمال غسان الأدبية الى سبع عشرة لغة ونشرت في أكثر من 20 بلداً، وتم إخراج بعضها في أعمال مسرحية وبرامج إذاعية في بلدان عربية وأجنبية عدة. اثنتان من رواياته تحولتا الى فيلمين سينمائيين. وما زالت أعماله الأدبية التي كتبها بين عامي 1956 و1972 تحظى اليوم بأهمية متزايدة. على الرغم من أن روايات غسان وقصصه القصيرة ومعظم أعماله الأدبية الأخرى قد كتبت في إطار قضية فلسطين وشعبها فإن مواهبه الأدبية الفريدة أعطتها جاذبية عالمية شاملة.

كثيراً ما كان غسان يردد: الأطفال هم مستقبلنا. لقد كتب الكثير من القصص التي كان أبطالها من الأطفال. ونشرت مجموعة من قصصه القصيرة في بيروت عام 1978 تحت عنوان أطفال غسان كنفاني. أما الترجمة الإنكليزية التي نشرت في عام 1984 فكانت بعنوان أطفال فلسطين. ...more
