The USS Tampa Bay, an American hunter-killer submarine, follows a Russian sub into Russian waters. Mysteriously, the Russian sub explodes and the Tampa Bay is torpedoed. An investigation is launched by the Department of Defense led by another American sub, the USS Arkansas. The sub’s captain is Commander Joe Glass, one of the few skippers who came up through the ranks to the top. Referred to as a Mustang in the Navy, he’s looked down upon by the Academy grads at the Pentagon, but he’s all they have to work with.

As the Arkansas heads to Russian waters, a recon team parachutes in to recon the situation. With the help of the NSA, they uncover a coup attempt where the Russian President is held captive by the Minister of Defense, who threatens war with the U.S. in order to gain control of the government. In order to restore peace, the ground team must kidnap the Russian President and restore him to power as they escape with the help of the USS Arkansas.

Gerard Butler stars as the sub’s captain, Joe Glass. Gary Oldman is the Chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff and Common is a two-star Admiral at the Pentagon.

This was one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. There was a lot of intense action and drama that kept me on the edge of my seat. I thought Gerard Butler did an outstanding job playing the part. As a retired member of the U.S. Navy, I took special note of the women stationed on the submarine as an equal member of the crew.
