W101 – Day 2 – Where a Writer Starts
W101 – Day 2 – Where a Writer Starts Though behind I’m going to catch up starting with W101 – Day 2 – Where a Writer Starts for my Writing 101 course. I’ve got several to send out, some I’ll bundle in a single post otherwise follow the links to the next post! Click here for Day 1. Day 2: Today’s Prompt: If you could zoom through space in the speed of light, what place would you go right now? Today’s Twist: organize your post around the description of a setting. There are a dozen or so places I can think to go: Namibia, Ecuador, San Francisco, Costa Rica, Italy, the Brookfield Zoo, something like my dreamhouse and a dream greenhouse, the list goes on. I close my eyes, switch one crossed leg for the other and shift my position. I shift entirely from my desktop to my laptop. I stop all together and submit some poetry, mess around on my phone or inspect my orchids for signs of new growth or spikes. I make lists for supplies, tasks, chores, needs, goals, and dreams. Back at my computer I stare down the task at hand: where will I...

Unlock the Mind
Unlock the Mind For the first Writing 101 assignment we’ve been asked to unlock the mind and with a 20-minute free write. That means no thinking ahead of time what I’m going to write about. Just get’er done. I desperately wanted to think of what to write then write freely, but no I won’t break the rules. The following is my 20 minute free write for Day 1: The pink sugar on my tongue has become something bitter, no longer the blissful sweet I experienced devouring four sparkly pink Peeps (a gift from my mom for Easter). Drink of water just makes the bitterness stronger. I grab the nearby paper towel to wipe my mouth only to throw the crumbs of fallen sugar from my bunny victims all over me. I hate crumbs all over me. Things sure do change, especially the consistency of marshmallow Peeps once you open the package. That’s why so many of them must be eaten at once, nothing is the same after you open that package. They’re so soft and fresh at first slowly getting harder, firmer, and un-deliciously stale, yes ‘un’. I’m thinking as I write this ‘free write’ for the first Blogging U....

Cymbidium Corsages and an Orchid Show
Cymbidium Corsages and an Orchid Show I plucked my day the minute I chose not to hit the snooze button, again. The minute I rose to my feet and took in the spring calls of songbirds and the gentle temperature that told me I didn’t have to wear a coat. Realizing this with leash in hand I remembered last year one day later not feeling this way. It was rather awkward really, walking around in the hot humidity of the greenhouse with my winter jacket tied insecurely to my waist. I fiddled again and again, clutching at it and re-securing the knot that was never meant to be. I was awkward then too with my camera bag, not so this time. The anxiety remained over coffee and breakfast; I still felt like I needed to be there the minute the pin dropped, knowing I wouldn’t be. A little bit of chocolate milk added to my instant mocha-cino made things a little sweeter. Fruit smoothie. Some avocado and garlic-salt enhanced low-fat cottage cheese. So far so good. Positive decisions. Dog walked. Batteries charged. Bag packed. Breath taken. Ready to go. Driving the 20+ miles this time I knew to some extent what...
